We have a heavyweight WNBA battle this afternoon when the league-leading New York Liberty meet two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces in a non-conference Saturday matchup.

Last season’s WNBA finalists have stepped up their defense which should make for a tightly contested and physical ballgame that features 10 Olympians. Read my Liberty vs. Aces predictions and WNBA picks below for my full thoughts and best bet.

Liberty vs Aces predictions

My best bet
Under 175 (-110 at FanDuel)

My analysis
This is the second meeting this season between two WNBA rivals. The New York Liberty won by eight points on June 15 and are riding a five-game winning streak, including a Thursday night 103-68 shellacking over the Sparks.

The Liberty boast a star-studded lineup and a league-best 22-4 record, but what changed from last season to this one is their defense; New York allows the third-fewest points per night (76.5) and its 12.9 net rating leads the W by a longshot.

The Las Vegas Aces also have a star-studded cast but got off to a slow start this season as they were without defensive stalwart Chelsea Grey. Since her return from injury, the defense has vastly improved. They’ve won four of their last five, with a 10-2 record since June 19.

The oddsmakers set an opening total of 175.5, which dipped as low as 171.5 but has since spiked to 175. That number seems a bit high, as Grey was absent in their previous meeting, and without her exceptional perimeter defense, New York drained 42% of their 3-point looks.

The Liberty’s exceptional shooting from long range was the difference in that game, but I don’t believe they'll shoot that well on the road with Grey on the floor. The Aces have allowed 32% shooting from downtown on 19 attempts since her return and without the Liberty threes, it will be difficult to clear this high of a total.

Liberty vs Aces same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 175

Jonquel Jones Over 14.5 points

I like the Under today, but I also expect forward Jonquel Jones to be a big scoring problem for the Aces.

Jones scored a career-high 34 points in their last meeting and she's a problem because she can score from all over the floor. I expect her to take advantage with Liberty forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton not in today's lineup.
