Liberty vs Dream Predictions, Picks, Odds for Tonight’s WNBA Game

The New York Liberty are running like a well-oiled machine now, and the mediocre Atlanta Dream don't stand a chance of matching them bucket-for-bucket, as our WNBA betting picks explain.

The New York Liberty will look to extend their four-game winning streak as they visit the Atlanta Dream on Thursday night.

New York (8-2) is the favorite in the WNBA odds tonight over the Dream (4-3), who are coming off a 19-point loss to the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. I don’t think Atlanta can slow down New York’s star-studded roster, as I explain in my free Liberty vs. Dream predictions and WNBA picks for June 6.

Liberty vs Dream predictions

My best bet
Liberty -6.5 (-110 at FanDuel)

My analysis

Outside of the Connecticut Sun, who remain undefeated so far this season, no WNBA team has been more impressive than the New York Liberty. New York hasn’t just been winning but blowing teams out, with each of their last three victories being decided by double digits.

Opponents have to make some difficult choices when dealing with the Liberty on the offensive end. Breanna Stewart (19.4 points per game) is the primary threat, as the 6-foot-4 forward is a two-time league MVP who is efficient in the post and can extend the floor when necessary.

But teams can’t afford to regularly double Stewart, as there are several other strong scoring options in the Liberty lineup. Sabrina Ionescu (17.9 ppg) is one of the top shooters in the WNBA, while Jonquel Jones (14.0 ppg) and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (12.8 ppg) are threats both down low or from beyond the arc. All four players are capable of leading New York in scoring on any given night, which is why the Liberty boast a league leading offensive rating of 107.1.

New York is also tough on the defensive end, ranking fourth in defensive rating (94.1). They’re particularly tough to break down in the post, with Stewart and Jones each averaging over a block per game.

But the Liberty have the biggest advantage in the paint tonight. While Tina Charles (12.7 ppg) is a future Hall-of-Famer, the 35-year-old is no longer the same player she was for much of the last decade, and will have her hands full against Stewart and Jones.

The Atlanta Dream may be able to keep up with New York in the backcourt, where both Allisha Gray (16.3 ppg) has been deadly from 3-point range and Rhyne Howard (16.4 ppg) has proved to be a solid volume scorer this year. But it’s hard to see Atlanta putting together consistent, efficient offense against the Liberty, who are holding opponents to just 40.4% from the floor for the season.

Despite all the advantages I’ve laid out for New York here, the Liberty are still only favored by 6.5 points tonight. New York has won most of its games by double digits this season and has shown no signs of trouble on the road, going 3-1 away from home to start the year as well. Facing an Atlanta team that’s just another average squad in the WNBA, the Liberty should easily cover the spread in tonight’s game.

Liberty vs Dream same-game parlay (SGP)

Liberty -6.5

Under 165

Tina Charles Under 12.5 points

Neither of these teams plays particularly quickly or has a history of playing to big scores this year. For my same-game parlay, I’m predicting a low-scoring affair to go along with the Liberty covering.

Along with the Under, I’m also throwing in a bet on Tina Charles to come up short of her scoring prop. Charles has scored 12 points or less in four of her last six games and shouldn’t be an offensive focus for the Dream, as she’ll have to contend with Stewart and Jones in the post.

Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
