Lynx vs Liberty Predictions, Picks & Odds for Today’s WNBA Game

Both Minnesota and New York have title aspirations and with the playoffs drawing closer, it's time to make a statement. The best way to do that is with defense, and our WNBA expert believes the total is to high for this contest.

The Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty are the league’s two best teams meeting for the fourth time this season.

This afternoon’s tilt features several, high-scoring former or current Olympians, but these groups lead with their defenses, and both stop units play a major role in my Lynx vs Liberty predictions and WNBA picks for Sunday, September 15.

My analysis

Today’s WNBA clash between the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty is one I’ve been looking forward to all week.

Defense and tempo will play a major factor in today’s battle.

That’s because today’s battle features two of the best defenses in the league boasting Top 3 defensive net ratings. Neither group allows an average of 77 points per night since the Paris break and that’s going to make for a great watch.

Since the break, the Lynx have allowed the fewest field goal attempts per game (24) because they play great help defense with the length to defend the three-point arc. That will cause a high-volume three-point shooting team like the Liberty all sorts of fits and force them to score elsewhere.

By comparison, the Liberty play the same stingy defense. They’ve allowed the fourth-fewest FG attempts (28.7) because their interior defense is as stout as there is in the league — opponents also drain a league-worst 29% from downtown which makes it tough for a Lynx side relying on nine triples per tilt.

Today’s contest also features slow-tempo offenses. Since the break, the Lynx are ninth in tempo while the Liberty is fourth. Minnesota is very good at controlling the pace of games and the slow tempo will allow two great defenses to become even greater while causing both offenses to struggle.

These teams are going to war, and the way these teams defend leads me to the Under.

Lynx vs Liberty same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 159.5

Breanna Stewart Under 1.5 threes

Liberty moneyline

Breanna Stewart is taking fewer attempts from downtown this season (4.1) on a career-low 28%. She’s failed to clear 2+ triples in three of her last four and only once in three games against Minnesota.

The Liberty are 16-2 and 4-1 at home since the break. They won their last meeting at Barclays against Minnesota by getting physical inside. Minnesota doesn’t have the size to make a significant impact on the glass, and I believe the rebounding and home-court advantage gives NY the edge today.
