Lynx vs Liberty Predictions, Picks, & Odds for Tonight’s WNBA Game

The New York Liberty will look to extend their four-game winning streak while hosting one of the few teams that have given them problems this year, as the Minnesota Lynx visit the Barclays Center tonight.

My analysis
As dominant as the New York Liberty have been, two issues have become apparent: New York struggles to cover regularly, and it can't figure out how to beat the Minnesota Lynx.

In their first two matchups this season, the Lynx have won by 17 points in Minnesota and by five in New York for the Commissioner’s Cup. The Liberty were substantial favorites in both, a role they’ll again play tonight.

But it’s unclear if anyone deserves to be favored by several points against this Minnesota team. For one, the Lynx play the best defense in the WNBA, posting an impressive defensive rating of 91.3. 

Minnesota is also one of the few teams able to hang with New York on the offensive end. Napheesa Collier (20.9 ppg) is one of the league’s best scoring options, and the Lynx have additional reliable scoring options in Kayla McBride (15.8 ppg) and Alanna Smith (12.1 ppg). 

Minnesota proved it could beat the Liberty at their own game during the last meeting, prevailing in a 94-89 shootout. The high score masked the fact Minnesota's defense made the difference, holding New York to just 10 points during the key third quarter in which the Lynx took the lead for good. 

That was the story earlier this year, too, in the true regular season matchup. The Lynx beat the Liberty 84-67, holding New York to just 38.2% shooting, including 7-for-29 from 3-point range. 

Given Minnesota’s success against the Liberty already this season and the questionable tag on Sabrina Ionescu, it’s hard to turn down a few points with the Lynx tonight.

I’m expecting the Minnesota offense to give New York fits for the third time this season, and that’s the basis for my same-game parlay. I’m not only taking the Lynx to cover but also betting on them to surpass their team total of 81.5 points, something they’ve done in each of their first two meetings with the Liberty this year.

I’ll also take Collier to lead the scoring charge and hit the Over on her personal scoring prop. Collier has scored at least 21 points in three of her last four games, including in the last meeting between these two teams.
