Mercury vs Storm Predictions, Picks, Odds for Tonight’s WNBA Game

With the Mercury missing key pieces and the Storm rounding into form of late with their offseason acquisitions building chemistry with their mainstays, we like Seattle to take care of business tonight.

The Seattle Storm hit the free-agent market hard this season and came up with two gems in Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike.

The two All-Stars are blending in with their new teammates on both ends of the floor and meet a shorthanded Phoenix Mercury group playing their fifth game in eight nights. This budding chemistry factors into my Mercury vs. Storm predictions below.

My WNBA picks for tonight’s Commissioner’s Cup clash expect Seattle to continue excelling tonight.

Mercury vs Storm predictions

My best bet
Storm -7 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis

It’s a tale of two teams trending in the opposite direction when the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm hit the hardwood tonight in a Commissioner’s Cup matchup.

Phoenix has a solid, veteran roster but has been hampered by injuries. Center Brittney Griner has missed the entire season while forward Rebecca Allen hasn't played since May 25 and may not suit up tonight.

Despite the injuries, the Mercury did snap a four-game losing streak Sunday at home over the LA Sparks. Phoenix averages 84 points a night on the most triple attempts but allows the second-most points per game (84.8) and without Griner is the worst defensive rebounding team in the W.

That’s going to make it hard for Phoenix to win this game. Seattle has won four straight because free agent acquisitions Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike are beginning to gel with leading scorer Jewell Loyd, and center Ezi Magbegor is throwing shots (3.0) and snagging rebounds (8.6).

The Storm are pushing the pace, scoring 100+ in two of their last five. Seattle’s free agents are starting to find some chemistry with Loyd, and Magbegor provides a solid offensive rebounding and scoring presence that the shorthanded and undersized Mercury won’t be able to deal with.

Seattle is riding a four-game winning streak and meets a Phoenix team playing its fifth game in eight nights. The Storm have had four extra days to rest and prepare, are at full strength, and meet the worst-scoring defense in the league. The Mercury rely too heavily on the triple and Seattle boasts strong perimeter defenders and should dominate the boards. The Storm are beginning to put it all together and should run a Mercury side allowing the second-most points per night right out of the Climate Pledge Arena gym.

Mercury vs Storm same-game parlay (SGP)

Storm alt spread -7.5

Over 159.5

Ezo Magbegor Over 13.5 points

Tonight’s tilt features two of the fastest teams in the W. Seattle has scored 90+ in half of their games and is 3-2-0 to the Over across their last five. The Storm have also allowed 80+ in two of their last four and Phoenix will score enough to get it there.

Magbegor has been a force for the Storm and has cleared her scoring prop number in three of her last five. Phoenix doesn’t box out well, and Magbegor should eat against a Mercury group allowing nine offensive rebounds and 11, second chance points per night.
