The best player in the WNBA has been pouring in points lately, A’ja Wilson cracking 40 twice in the Las Vegas Aces’ last three games. Meanwhile, Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese just set the WNBA record for rebounds in a season, breaking Sylvia Fowles’ 2018 record in two fewer games.

While my Sky vs. Aces predictions may tip off the theme of this article, my WNBA picks may not be what you're thinking for Tuesday, September 3.

Sky vs Aces predictions

My best bet
A’ja Wilson Over 12.5 rebounds (+106 at FanDuel)

My analysis
A'ja Wilson is saving the Las Vegas Aces’ season, keeping hopes alive for their three-peat. They have won three of their last four in no small part because Wilson has averaged 32.25 points and 14.25 rebounds per game in the last week.

Las Vegas needs every win it can get, only one game in the standings away from falling out of homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs. This chase for back-to-back-to-back titles was going to be hard enough; not having homecourt in the first round would just add to that burden.

Wilson has been more consistently dominant on the glass than on the scoreboard this week, since the Olympics break and, frankly, all season. She topped this lofty prop three in times in the last four games and has averaged 12 rebounds since the Olympics break. Let’s argue for this trend a bit more: Wilson has grabbed 13 or more boards in eight of her last 12 games, averaging 13.8 snags in that stretch.

You might hesitate to trust anyone on the glass against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. All due respect to Reese — and anyone who throws disrespect at her clearly has not been watching the rookie’s outstanding development this season — Wilson is still going to collect plenty of rebounds tonight.

These teams have met three times already this season. Wilson grabbed 14 and 18 boards in the most recent two, including just a week ago to start this strong stretch. She should always be trusted to find missed shots if for no other reason than she dictates those terms in the Las Vegas rotation. Wilson has grabbed 19.9% of available rebounds in her 1,096 minutes this season. Of Aces players with more than 300 minutes played, only Kiah Stokes (572 minutes) finds more than 9% of available rebounds, at a strong 14.8%.

That is where facing the Sky plays to Wilson’s strengths. Chicago ranks No. 10 in offensive rating in the last two months — effectively a month of games, accounting for the Olympics break. In the same stretch, the Sky have made only 42.8% of their shots, No. 9 in the WNBA.

There will be a bounty of missed shots in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. No one, not even Angel Reese, is better at collecting those than A’ja Wilson.

Sky vs Aces same-game parlay (SGP)

A'ja Wilson Over 12.5 rebounds

Angel Reese Under 14.5 rebounds

Reese doesn’t get enough praise. In 32 games, she has grabbed 418 rebounds, a WNBA single-season record. Some critics claim she did this in a longer season, and yes, this WNBA season will be 40 games long. Will be. Reese has not played them all yet. The record of 404 had been set by Sylvia Fowles in 34 games in 2018.

Reese reached that record in such a quick time because she has been a force since she finally got a breather during the Olympics. Reese and fellow rookie Caitlin Clark had been playing meaningful basketball since November. They needed a moment to breathe. They were worn out. Since that pause, Reese has grabbed 19 or more rebounds in four of nine games, with a fifth game at 15.

But in her three games against Wilson and the Aces, Reese had “only” snagged 11 boards and 10 boards before her 22-rebound performance last week. This will be Wilson’s chance at revenge.

And as such a healthy favorite with the lingering seeding motivation, Las Vegas should put this game to bed early and hold onto the lead regardless of how Reese plays.

  • Spread: Chicago +11.5 | Las Vegas -11.5
  • Moneyline: Chicago +490 | Las Vegas -750
  • Over/Under: Over 164.5 | Under 164.5

Sky vs Aces spread and Over/Under analysis

  • This spread opened late on Sunday with Las Vegas favored by 11.5, rising to -12 and even -13 at some books on Monday afternoon.
  • The Aces had lost nine straight games against the spread before winning their last two, perhaps finally turning the corner to expected competence, just maybe.
  • The total opened at 164.5 late on Sunday and jumped to 166 on Monday afternoon, in tandem with the spread.

Sky vs Aces trend

Chicago is on a six-game losing streak, going just 1-6 outright since the Olympics break. That can partly be attributed to trading Mabrina Mabrey during the break, partly to Chennedy Carter missing action due to COVID, and partly, perhaps, to the Sky seeing a reason to tank out of the WNBA playoffs in pursuit of UConn superstar Paige Bueckers. Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
