Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will look to bounce out of their recent funk as they host the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.

The Fever have lost three of their last four, but as still heavy favorites in the WNBA odds over the Wings (9-29), who have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

I’ll take a look at how these two defensively challenged squads match up – and throw in a Caitlin Clark prop bet – in my free Wings vs. Fever predictions and WNBA picks for September 15.

Wings vs Fever predictions

My best bet
Over 186.5 (-110 at BetMGM)

My analysis
Indiana has been a much better team than Dallas this year, but the two teams have one clear thing in common: they both seem allergic to playing defense. The Wings have the worst defensive rating in the WNBA (110.9), with the Fever second-worst in that category (106.8).

With both teams also among the pacier teams in the league, that has led to a lot of big scores in their games. Dallas in particular has allowed opponents to run and gun on a regular basis, allowing 91.5 points per game on the season – the only team to allow an average of over 90 points this year.

Seeing those numbers, it should come as no surprise that these teams have combined to put up a lot of points in their two meetings this year. While Dallas and Indiana have split the two meetings, both resulted in the winning team crossing the 100-point barrier, while the loser scored 93 each time. The average total of those two games came to 193.5 ppg.

That number is well above the number that oddsmakers have put on tonight’s game. At 186.5, the books are clearly trying to catch up with these two offenses — it’s the biggest number on any of their three meetings — but it’s still not nearly enough for me to think these teams won’t blow past it by the time we get to the final minutes of the game. I’m taking the Over.

Caitlin Clark pick: Clark spreads her own wings

My best bet
Over 23.5 points (-106 at FanDuel)

My analysis
Everyone who has followed Caitlin Clark’s rookie season even in passing knows that she has put up historic assists numbers. But as the season has worn on and she’s become more accustomed to the speed and size of the professional game, Clark has also become a consistent and reliable scorer for the Fever.

You might not realize that if you looked at her numbers from this past week. In two games against the Las Vegas Aces, Clark averaged a pedestrian 17 ppg, significantly below her season average. But playing the Aces is a tough test for any player, let alone a rookie who – for all her success – is still going to have tough days against elite competition.

If we look at how Clark has played lately against average WNBA competition, we see that she’s been scoring at a tremendous rate. In her five games before the two matchups with the Aces, she averaged 26.8 ppg, scoring at least 24 points in each of those games.

The Wings have the worst defensive numbers in the league and haven’t fared well against Clark, who torched them for 28 points in their last meeting two weeks ago as well as 24 in their other meeting this season.

I’m expecting Clark to put up similar numbers on Sunday.

Wings vs Fever same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 186.5

Fever -9.5

Caitlin Clark Over 23.5 points

I’m confident in taking the Over in this game, and that leads me naturally into two more legs for my same-game parlay this afternoon. I’m going to include my Caitlin Clark prop bet here, as I expect her to get back to the scoring streak we saw earlier this month.

That should be part of an overall offensive explosion for the Fever, who stand to get the best of a shootout in Indiana. While both teams have been struggling as of late, the Fever have the talent to exploit a Wings defense that hasn’t been able to stop anyone this year, let alone one of the better offensive squads in the WNBA. I’m taking Indiana to cover to round out this SGP.

Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
