These teams played 4 weeks ago with Mercer winning on their home court by a score of 90-81. In this game VMI blew an 11 point lead with under 8 minutes remaining. In this game, Mercer made 29 of 57 from the field (50.9%) while VMI only shot (37.1) making 26 of 70.
Several things really stand out in this game, that lead me to believe VMI gets the win tonite. In the first game:
- VMI had 26 fouls called on them vs. 13 for Mercer and 2 VMI players fouled out
- VMI only shot 15 Free Throws compared to 38 by Mercer
- VMI had 70 FG attempts compared to 57 by Mercer.
- Mercer was 7 for 12 or 58.3% on 3 Point Shots.
- VMI was outrebounded by Mercer 47 to 29, but VMI ranks as the 8th best rebounding team in the country with an average of 41.6 rebounds per game.
You must also consider that VMI is the 5th highest scoring team in the country at 85.7 points and shoots 41.7%. In the first meeting VMI only shot 37.1% while Mercer who averages about the same at 42.2% shot over 50%. All of this and VMI only lost by 9 points.
So, now you reverse just a few of these stats with VMI playing on their home court and you start to see a much different outcome. I look for VMI to dictate the tempo at home, get a more favorable balance on fouls called and I do not expect Mercer to shoot over 50% again, which should lead to an outright win by VMI.
