The year was 2004, I was a young 21 year old airman/sailor aboard the USS John C Stennis, the worlds most badass aircraft carrier at that time! Being on the aviation side of the Navy and working in Avionics, we liked to say our job was "Putting warheads on foreheads." The carrier was out on a workup to prepare for the May 2004 Westpac deployment, and we were lucky enough to have super slow internet access in the evenings. Everyone in our shop would have to fight over two computers to email their girlfriends and wives back home in hopes they weren't being cheated on or their bank accounts hadn't been emptied! This is when an older shipmate of mine introduced me to the world of sportsbetting on sportsbook.com. He had showed me how to do this on a previous workup, and we were betting on college football at the time. I believe I was really lucky and naive and turned 100$ into $1000 and somehow through all the parlays that were going to make me rich. I managed to do decent when college basketball arrived, basketball being something in my blood growing up in Indiana.
I remember thinking no way Emeka Okafor was not going to win the national championship for UConn, and I was determined to go all in and double up the $1600 dollars I had managed to hold onto in the sportsbook account. Many of you probably remember the 2004 national championship game between UConn and Duke. Many of you probably had large wagers on it. Here I was sitting in the shop on the ship, watching the game on a small tv while out at sea, being brought to us by the Armed Forces Network. I always appreciated them broadcasting big games for us. $1600 riding on UConn -2.5, in front of all my shipmates, all of them cheering for me on the big bet.
UConn goes on an 11-0 run in the last few minutes and were up 78-75 with Okafor at the line with 3.2 seconds left. He misses the first free throw but makes the second. Duke inbounds the ball to Chris Duhon, he throws up a "meaningless" shot while crossing halfcourt, the ball goes in. I drop to the deck, in shock and disbelief! Uconn wins 79-76 but does not cover. Needless to say, I was hooked on sports betting from that point on. Always hoping to avenge my bad beat and win back that amount many times over.
I heard that in Vegas, people in the sportsbook either jumped for joy, and fell to the ground in shock. I had read an article at the time calling it "The shot heard around Vegas." Articles for reference below.

I just wanted to share a story as to my start into this world. I've been a long time lurker on covers, some years more than others. I got bigger into the stock market the last couple of years, I promise you the crooks at the big banks on wall street are way worse than the sportsbooks. You want to talk about manipulation and line movement, play the market for awhile! That being said, there are some good cappers on here who I compare my personal bets with before pulling the trigger, but I promise you at the end of the day, I always trust myself and only have myself to blame if I lose money. There has been so much drama lately, especially with SB and all of those Shenanigans. I don't really have much to say on that, seems like he had a hot streak and he is pretty good at first half plays. Regression happens to everyone, and I think the biggest thing most people are missing is that.........THE GAME HAS IS PLAYED ON THE HARDWOOD!! I don't care what way the line moved, or how much money is bet and how much of it was sharp money or square money, that does not put the ball into the basket. End of the year and tournament time, can be the toughest time for most cappers. Who needs to win the most, who wants to win the most, who is playing on senior night and has all of their family there and playing at home for the last time, who has the flu, what coach is telling their team that they are on Lunardis bubble and this is the biggest game they will ever play to this point. So many variables and factors, it's often literally a coin flip. Money management is key, keep some dry powder on the side so you stay in the game.
I believe in the eye test, there are lots of teams I have watched play this year and have a pretty good feel for. I'm most knowledgeable on the Big 10. I could go on and on but this is feeling way too long already! Sorry if I bored you. I'll be posting playing in here from now until the tournament is over and I'll keep track of my record. I'm going to put some live betting in here as well, but I'm not really sure that's fair if everyone can't get them as I do.

Last night I knew the Spartans Vs Nittany Lions game was a coin flip, that's why I didn't make a wager before the game. But you can bet bankroll that I watched it live and had my draftkings and fanduel apps both open and watching in game odds. Once I saw Michigan St at +12.5 in game, I took that with a 2 unit play, and at one point put .25 units on +800 ML. (I believe it got a lot higher than that at one point).
Remember, the kids still have to play the game and make the shots! This tournament is going to be crazy, I know I'll favor taking the points more than not. Sometimes you can be on the right side, but the ball won't roll your way. Good luck everyone.

First play. Florida St -1.5 I've watched this Notre Dame team play, they usually play to the level of their opponent. They nearly stole the game earlier this year, but I'll take this bet and count on the FL St defense to get a couple of key stops towards the end.

I knew a couple of sailors from the weekly poker game that I played that were on boats due to their rate. The one told me horror stories of having 16+ hours days due to his job. The other was telling me about a chick (nobody was named, that was one of the few females on board) that was actually prostituting herself for A LOT of cash. Also, non-drinkers selling their 2 beers for boo-ku bucks that the skipper allowed on a rare occasion. Nonetheless, we look back at our times in the service and reminisce about the good times and laugh at the bad times..
BOL with your play tonight.
You still in or out? As for me, 4 years in from 09-13 in the AirForce..

GL Ryboy, FSU is the real deal. They are at least a sweet 16 team, I believe elite 8, maybe better just depends on the matchups as I'm sure you know. This line tonite bothered me, if I see a line that doesn't make sense to me, I generally stay away. I don't bet a lot of games, if I see one thing I really don't like, I bypass it. I look for reasons to eliminate games as much as I do to play them. My goal in college hoops is to find 4-5 games a week, that's it, and it's been a successful formula for me for a few years now. GL to you!

No way! You were in PACAF!? Misawa right here bro.. Did a 2 week "TDY" in Okinawa/kadenafor the Civil Engineering squadron and their "R.E.D. H.O.R.S.E" unit.. Boy that place was such a mess due to the relations with the locals. Non-stop curfew enforced on all armed forces members for that little island. There was always something that pissed off the locals EVERY weekend that damaged the delicate relationship with the locals. A D.U.I, fight, "rape" and so on...

BOL to you as well and thanks for the response. Yes, I remember when we were allotted a couple of beers, they were valuable! I served a long time ago, at least it seems so long ago 2001-2005. Literally right after high school. I actually signed up during my senior year but was not supposed to ship off until December. Then 9/11 happened, I woke up that dreadful morning and my uncle was at my front door and said turn on your tv, the world trade center was just hit by a plane. I replied....whats the world trade center? He looked me in the eye after that second plane hit and said " You're going to war!" Boy was he right. The next day on 9/12 two Navy recruiters knocked on my door and said...you're leaving early for boot camp, we are going to war. You're leaving on Oct 17th, I told them that was my birthday! What a fun birthday that was! That one day event on that one day changed the path of so many young Americans lives.

Yup, fishy for sure, but it's such a down year for ND and they are so unpredictable. However, FL St. is predictable, they will be in this game and usually pull the close ones out. It's worth a bet for me.

You too square and everyone else, anyone have any picks for the Kansas TCU game? I’m leaning TCU with the points
Lately these big conference games have been close, so the points look appealing. It's a no play for me, TCU just took Baylor to OT the other night. Baylor tends to wear teams out and teams are like 4-10 ATS or something like that coming off of a game against Baylor this year.

it will be fun and challenge for me to keep track of my plays on a public forum. It will also help keep me more disciplined knowing that other people may bet the picks as well.
