BTW,
I am with you on this 1 as well however Virginia has cost me big this year, I can never get on the right side of this team.
Rolled NC state at home Sat and they could not hit open shots the entire game, 1st half vir could not miss. took the steam right out of them although they made a valient attempt to come back late. I do think that T smith will be able to work at creating his own shot and if successful we may have a game coming down to ft's. If they can hold him to under 12 we should be golden.
....Neither coach comes into this match-up wanting to run. Not a chance. Sure, you might have your occasional transition opportunities, but both of these guys know that your best form of defense is taking the air out of the ball when you’re on offense. Both coaches have openly preached this their entire career. OK – enough of the stats, and into the match-ups. Milton Jenning’s isn’t playing for Clemson. While I don’t think it is all that important of a loss on the court, it certainly opens up more questions. Who uses his possessions? It’s not like they knew this suspension was coming and could be prepared for it. It sounds like he missed a class or study hall recently, and it’s being thrown out immediately. How much prep time have they had? He’s their leading possession guy. He’s their best defensive rebounder. But, more importantly, he’s one of their most experienced players. It appears that after the scuffle with Brownell earlier in the year and he was suspended for a game, Brownell went with a guard to replace him. Not sure if that was b/c of matchups with Hawaii, or the pace they were expecting or what, but Hall doesn’t bring much to the table. And, he’s a freshman. They quickly went to Sullivan to play the inside role in that game, so that’s who I assume gets the minutes tonight. He has the worst FG% on the team, he rebounds far worse than Jenning’s, his block and steal percentages are far worse, he’s the worst FT shooter on the team, and his assist percentages are not even close to Jenning’s in any way, shape or form. Again, I don’t think the loss to Jenning’s from a match-up standpoint is all that big of a deal in terms of what each team wants to do, but it certainly does not help. You’re taking one of Clemson’s most experienced, and inserting a ton of freshman who have no experience, and more importantly, no experience against this style of play in a hostile environment. As for the other match-ups, at the PG spot, Andre Young can shoot, but he draws one of the better PG defender’s in the country in Evans. Only other person I’m really concerned with from a scoring standpoint is Tanner Smith. His advantages usually lie on his size. He can shoot over defenders when he’s playing the guard spot, and he’s had a couple good games doing so. I don’t see it tonight. Virginia lines up with just as much size if not more at that position. Whoever plays the other guard slot for Clemson, I don’t see any scoring on Zeglinski (who also has a steal % in the top 150 along with Evans above). Will Clemson get any scoring from Booker? Beats me. Again, Brownell’s focus is on defense, and Booker gets the match-up of Mike Scott in the post. Another nice addition to the match-ups. All Booker’s job is tonight is to defend Mike Scott. If you haven’t been keeping up with Mike Scott, his offensive #’s are through the roof, AND, he shoots it well from the foul line. He has been Virginia’s main source of offense, and part of a reason why their games are slow. They reverse the ball, and it seems that it’s almost mandatory that he gets a touch on every possession. Thus, Scott will get his touches, but the outside lanes will open up some easy shots as well with a big focus trying to stop him (Clemson does not defend 3-point line well). So, recapping these match-ups, I don’t see how Clemson scores tonight. For one, they’re being slowed down on the road with a couple young players who have no idea what’s in store in terms of style. The spots where they normally score from are covered up pretty well in terms of scheme and style. Everything Clemson wants to do in this game and everything Brownell has preached comes down to defense, and they have to contain a giant tonight. That expands energy, again leading to an even porous offensive display. Here’s a quote I grabbed from Brownell: “Our defense is going to have to be outstanding tonight to have a chance.”. No Coach, you are going to need to score if you want to stay close in this one, and I don’t see it happening. Aside from all of that rambling, the Virginia team you’ve witnessed the past week included Harris and Zeglinski playing through sicknesses, so they’re back at full strength. Clemson’s coming into the game on the road after playing an ugly Wake Forest style, and coming into a man-to-man after seeing a bit of zone in each of the past three games. Bennett went with a shorter practice Sunday for Virginia to give them some much needed rest, certainly a factor with a short turnaround here. I could be way off and I could have over-thought this one. I just don’t see a player on Clemson’s roster that’s going to be able to create their own shot. Maybe Young, if he takes five steps back and launches from 30 feet. Maybe Tanner Smith? I don’t know. I just don’t see it anywhere, really. If you don’t have that, then you aren’t going to score. No revenge, no look-ahead, no other angles present. I hate playing semi-big favorites in a projected low-scoring game, it’s just hard for me to ignore the numerous advantages that lie on the side of Virginia here. I also point to the under for what it’s worth, just scared that Virginia pushes the total by themselves.
5* Virginia -7
More, I think.
