7 posted winners in row, going for 8. The goal is 10.

    Last CFB season: Not good.

    This season: A respectable 2-0.

This week's game: Bowling Green -2.5 @ Purdue.

Why am I taking this game over my locals? Because they destroyed Maryland, a Big 10 team (my capping conference of choice) @ Maryland 48-27. You may not think much of Maryland. But they are an up and coming team in a very tough conference so they play like hell against everyone who isn't OSU, Mich State and Wisconsin to get themselves wins and into a Bowl. And when a team, especially an out of conference team, comes in their house and beats their head in, it turns my head to that team. I also have had a fondness for Purdue for many years so I do watch them when they are televised.

We are taking Bowling Green here.

    Why?

If nothing else, remember these numbers:

    2-22

    452.7

    609.3

I will tell you what these numbers mean in the write-up below. I think that is all you will need to confidently take Bowling Green as a side if you don't want to read an extensive write-up.

    Now for the reasoning:

    1) Purdue's QB problem

I like Austin Appleby. AMD, a top poster here, does not. He has an arm and can get you quick scores. He also turns the ball over a lot. Having said that, he doesn't matter anymore. Because the Purdue head coach decided to bench him. Of all weeks, he chose to bench him this week. More on that later.

Who did he replace him with? A redshirt freshman, named David Blough, who has never started.

Just from a physical standpoint, this is a bad switch. Appleby has NFL size. He's 6'5'' 239.

David Blough? 6'1'' 205. Folks, I'm about that height and weight and I am in shape and I would get destroyed on a college football field. But this isn't about me, it's about him. You have an undersized freshman starting his first college game against the highest flying offense in the nation.

Now I ask you, who would you rather have at QB. A guy who has the size and strength of an NFL QB, knows Purdue's system having played in it last year, is fighting for his job and is home with one last gasp to keep that said job, or this unknown freshmen who got thrust into this position last night.

It's quite obvious who gives you a better chance to win. 24 hours after the QB switch the line moved from -1 to -2.5. That's not a whole bunch for a very big change (mainly because people hate Appleby). Yes, I will give up 2.5 points to a redshirt freshman no matter how many times Appleby turns it over (because the guy does get you long TD's as well and will keep you in the game. Just ask Marshall, a game most of us watched).

    2) Bowling Green will annihilate you before you blink if you are not ready

And first I ask, is this redshirt freshman ready for this team? Who knows? Well we don't know. He is an unknown. But from the tape I've seen of him on youtube, he has a quick release, a nice dropback, definitely has an arm and can scramble.

But is he ready to go toe to toe against a starting QB on Bowling Green named Matt Johnson that is averaging whopping 452.7 passing ypg??? The team is averaging a mind-blowing 609.3 yards of offense a game. And before you say, against who? I will tell you:

    Tennessee

    Maryland

    Memphis

Folks, those aren't pushovers! In fact, that's pretty good quality. And yes, BG does give up a TON of yards. But they will score on you in every way possible and if you don't have a great defense, how do you stop them and worse, how do you match them on offense?

And you are asking this kid to match them...this week...in his first college start. Yes, I'll lay the 2.5.

    Next point.

    3) Purdue's problem on Defense

It's a problem alright. It's better than Bowling Green but I'll just sum it up this way:

They gave up 51 points to a team with a conservative offense starting a backup QB in his first road start ever in Virginia Tech last week. And that was...at home. Does this inspire confidence in you for a Purdue side? Not me.

    4) Purdue's coaching problem

Darrell Hazell - His record since coming to Purdue? 5-22. But it gets worse. His record since coming to Purdue excluding FCS victories: 2-22. And now he's up against the number one offense in the nation? And the spread opened at Purdue +1 which is a ML and is still under a FG? That's the insurance you get with this guy? Good luck if you are on Purdue. This team does not win under this guy...

But it gets worse. I'm a psychological capper. the frame of mind of the team plays a very important role in regards to whether a win or cover can be a achieved. After BG, Purdue has Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska. We all know they will almost certainly go 0-4 in those 4 games. So in this week's press conference Hazell was asked if this game against BG was a must win. He answered, "I wouldn't go as far as calling it a must win. We want to win every game." Why is he saying this? Almost certainly because in the same presser, he announced a change at starting QB and doesn't want to put pressure on this kid. Well if this game at 1-2 with 1-7 and a lost season staring you in the face after the next 4 games, isn't a must win, then what is? Give me BG all day.

    Miscellaneous points

-BG is coming off a tough loss no one thought they would compete in against Memphis 44-41. That game certainly is a boost of confidence for them, even in a loss.

-Purdue will almost certainly run the ball down BG's throats and their running game is decent. The results in this area will be there. But if BG gets out to a lead, you can't run the ball to score after score because BG will pull away, and Purdue simply won't have time to catch up. Their offense just isn't suited to win this game at the moment, especially without a QB in Appleby who could have kept this game close and even won it being benched (and he wouldn't have turned it over because BG's defense is terrible).

-Purdue is missing it's starting LB and backup LB. I don't even know who is third and how competent they would be. Not a meager position to be thin at against a high flying offense.

-Purdue has changed QB's before. In fact they've done in every year the past 4 years. Where did it get them? After switching to Appleby they went 1-6 last year and 1-2 this year. That's 2-8 with Appleby and the big switch that was supposed to win them games. The year before that? 1-12 on the year no matter who QB'ed. The year before that? Another lost season. And here they are again, switching QB's in a game I think is one of the worst possible times to do so.

I will say I don't want this kid to struggle too much because he will be yanked for Appleby and Appleby will be effective on this defense (and he'll come in knowing he had his job taken from him so he'll be playing over his head...but right now...he's on the bench so that's a good thing). So if Purdue largely runs the ball and the kid completes a few short passes, he'll stay in the game run clock and BG will be trying to score on them all day and score quickly.

If you don't have what you need to back BG under a FG here, I can't offer more. The line is still 2.5 right now so that's good.

And if you didn't want to read any of this, go look at the sentences containing the red, orange and blue numbers and that will serve as your cliff notes.

    The pick:

    Bowling Green -2.5 over Purdue

Yeah, I know it's annoying but this is what happens when you copy and paste from Word (which I need to do because I can't type large posts on this message board anymore with these inlaid videos running).

Right now college is so much better in terms of selection in comparison to the NFL. I can really dig among the worst of the worst while the NFL has their 'worst' winning outright all over the place (Skins, Jags, Raiders, Bucs to name a few).

So I'll stick around here until something really good leaps out at me in the NFL.

How do you feel about Georgia Southern at -16 vs Idaho... Really like Southern there...?? What about UMass +29?? Think they hang around a bit and can keep it relatively marginal.

    @Urban -
    @Hoops- David Blough
@Lock - I am already on Umass. Crushing loss last week so they have to bring something here (at least within 4 TD's. And the ND injuries are getting to a point where it's becoming laughable.)

All good reasons. Sound, logical thinking.

Much more involved than "This team sucks!"

I will follow this system closely (had to bring back this old chestnut)................................
