Urban Meyer is a great coach, and Florida is a great program... 

All the reason to sit this stupid bastard for the rest of the season, 

Prove something to the rest of the NCAA. 

Spikes should never play another game this year.

The Big 10 would sit his sorry ass.

I am not sure it warrants a suspension for the rest of the season, but anything less than 3 games is total BS.

Obviously I'm a Gator fan but I could live with 3 games.  No place for that crap.

I hate to be the bear of bad news but what he did was something that happens in 80 percent of ever pile of every football game ever played highschool, college, and NFL the one problem is he got caught on camera. Now let me explain, I hate urban meyer, and I hate FL but I have been around the game for a very long time played in it and have seen things much worse than this. Do you think if urban meyer saw this on their own film and not the live national broadcast game he would have suspended him???? NO WAY the only reason he is in trouble is because they have to make a statement to the country who watched it plain as day i dont want any problems on here. I agree that was he did was not nice but hey thats the nature of the beast

Half a game is a joke. But lets step back and look at this for a second. Urban Meyer is a HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. He is not a Priest, or a criminal prosecutor. If the NCAA doesnt step in with their own punishment, why in gods name would he Bench the Heart and soul of his defensive unit for the season? Hes trying to win a Championship, not a Nobel Peace prize.

That being said though, the NCAA should have stepped in and given him a 3 game suspension. That trash shouldn't be tolerated, but I can't blame Urban Meyer for doing what is best for his football team.

Winning football games is not his only responsibility as the head football coach. Disciplining his players when they need it, especially to one of his star players goes a long way in the rest of the teams eyes and with future recruits and the parents of future recruits.

tiderman - you are correct he has more responsibility as a head football coach but National Titles go farther in his teams eyes and his future recruits and parents than an incident that happens at all levels.

dez bryant gets suspended for the rest of the season for LYING and Brandon Spikes gets suspended for half a game for EYE GOUGING which technically is an assault on another human being.

arent there only 3 games left in the regular season before conference championships? i think thats a just punishment, seeing as how they clinched the easy already and have no threats left on their schedule

Im disappointed with the SEC themselves. The SEC threatened to suspend coaches for bad mouthing officials. Now they are ok with a 1/2 game suspension for eye gouging a defenseless player. Absurd

Oh please Urban is an OVERATED coach (he is ONLY as good as the talent the boosters buy)!

Florida is a good program?? Florida just like the NCAA and other college programs r corrupt to the CORE!!!!

Dont play all self righteous and ruin this young man's career! Football is a VERY violent game and at times players cross the line but by no means should he sit out the rest of the year!!

Should Dez Bryant be banned for the remainder of the season for lying to the NCAA?? HELL NO!!! The NCAA should NOT be in the position to be judge jury and executioner over these kids of which they make MILLIONS!!!

Your right. Technically its not his only responsibility, but winning is his priority. There are certain players you can make an example out of, but your defensive captain is not one of them. As a head coach you can be the greatest role model, and disciplinarian in the world. You can focus on your students grades, and making them into better men. But at the same time, if you aren't competing for titles your ass is in the hot seat. Winning is first, and thats how it always will be, whether its right or wrong.

If Urban was still coaching Bowling Green.....Spikes would be done. The MAC would make sure of it.  Believe me, I know BG and the MAC. The coach's that came out of there, ie.  Meyer, Saban, did it right, so they could bump the salary from 150,000, to 4.5 mill.

funny thing I heard on espn...the player who got gouged doesn't think Spikes should be suspended...

Ohio State linebacker Ryan Renolds choked Wisconsin QB Sorgi during a 2003 game.  Sorgi was out 1 game due to the choke and Renolds was suspended for 1 game.

And when you consider how Chip Kelly and the AD at Oregon handled the Blount/Hout fiasco. Florida and the SEC are basically saying "we only care about winning a title and the character of our players is not our responsibility."
