There are just two things we need to get straight. #1. The Earth is not flat. #2. Vanderbilt is not good. I know these are difficult and profound concepts. I mean, if you heat water enough, it boils. When we finished last season, Wake Forest was 30 points better than Vandy. The Deacons didn’t get that much worse and the Commode Doors didn’t get that much better.
I get the feeling that the public is fading Wake Forest simply because Sam Hartmann isn’t playing. I wouldn’t worry too much about an offense that scored 41 points per game last season. Wake Forest has 4 starters back on the O-Line of last year’s bowl winning team. Last week against VMI, the Wake Forest quarterbacks were 24/33 with 3 TD’s and zero interceptions in their comfortable 44-10 victory. Even better was their underrated defense, which held VMI to 2.6 yards per carry rushing as they made the Keydets punt the ball 8 times. VMI isn’t terrible, and they certainly weren’t much worse than Vandy last season.
Before everyone starts ejaculating all over Vanderbilt, let’s bring things back down to planet Earth. Their 53 point week zero victory over Hawaii is more a testament of the Rainbow Warrior’s ineptitude than it is anything else. Hawaii last week showed their true colors, losing by 32 points to a WKU team that struggled to beat Austin Peay. That’s right, Hawaii is not as good as Austin Peay, so Vandy’s big win is meaningless. Vandy was even less impressive last week in a home game against FCS pinata Elon. VMI is a lot better than Elon is and Wake handled VMI much easier than Vandy did against Elon. The Commodore defense yielded 495 yards of offense and 31 points to Elon which makes it plainly evident that Wake Forest is going to easily be able to score 40 on Vandy. The Commodore defense has very little depth.
SEC or not, there's not a single SEC team with weaker DBs than Vanderbilt has and Wake Forest is going to exploit this with their mega star receiver A.T. Perry. In fact, Wake Forest QB connected with 7 different receivers last week and he showed a lot of poise in his first outing while running that hypnotic slow mesh offense. Vandy has lost 6 of their last 8 home games, so it’s not the toughest place in the world to play. Coming into the season, Vanderbilt had won just 5 games over the past 3 seasons. These guys are just LAAH – Hoooosers! The Massey computer had Wake Forest at number 23 last week and Vanderbilt all the way down to number 114. I don’t care how many patsies you beat, you’re not going to move up into the top 50 overnight. For now, Vandy is still Vandy. Wake Forest has managed to go bowling in each of the last seven years. In the battle of the smart schools, Wake is still a lot better in football than Vanderbilt is and covering the 7 points with a potent Demon Deacon offense will not be a problem. Laying the wood on the Deacs.

Congratulations. You got a random hater. This tends to happen with success. Keep it up. You were 4-3 and this point last year.

With you on Wake, but I'll probably be hitting that TT when it drops. Vanderbilt puts up points. Elon Phoenix still hung 31 on them. That is a team that barely beat Campbell last year.

Now there is no question that Uconn is a much better team this year than they were last year, because of Coach Mora. But at the end of the day, it boils down to talent. Mora can get them to play harder, and a little bit better but it’s not going to be good enough. Last week UCONN won a game. Wow. The score remained 7-3 heading into the locker room for halftime.
Utah State scored 31 points on UCONN but the Huskies could only get 20 points against the Aggies. On the other hand, Louisville, and Malik Cunningham, could only score 7 points against Syracuse. So if Malik could only score 7, how is freshman Zion Turner going to score more than 10 points behind that swiss cheese offensive line of Connecticut?
Utah State put up 542 yards of offense up on UCONN. What’s Syracuse going to do to them? I will give you a hint, Syracuse had 449 yards of offense against Louisville. Who’s defense is better, Louisville’s or UCONN’s? It’s kind of hard to envision that Syracuse won’t score at least 31 points, given they put up that number on Louisville. That’s your cover right there. This Syracuse offense is something special. The Orange scored 31 points while committing 18 penalties for 107 yards. Really incredible when you think about it. Garrett Shrader was deadly through the air and on the ground and the ‘Cuse pounded the rock as well with Sean Tucker getting nearly 100 yards. Shrader was the highest-graded quarterback among Power Five players after Week 1, according to Pro Football Focus. Louisville’s head coach called Tucker a great player and an All-American type running back. Tucker has rushed for at least 100 yards in 13 of his 21 career games at the college level, eclipsing the mark in seven straight games in 2021. It’s a pretty good bet he is going to run all over UCONN. The Louisville coach also lamented that the other thing that really hurt them was the scrambling of the quarterback. I expect the Huskies to get a heaping helping of both Tucker and Shrader.
Ta’Quan Roberson was UCONN’s opening-day starter, and he is out for the remainder of the 2022 season. UCONN also lost their top two wide receivers- Cam Ross last fall and Keelan Marion against Utah State. So we have Zion Turner, who thinks he can play at this level because he completed 14 of 22 passes against Central Connecticut to his JV receivers. No…just no. The game will move much too fast for him and he will throw the ball to Syracuse defenders. Remember, against Utah State he managed only 109 yards with one TD and two picks That’s the best he could possibly hope for against Syracuse. So the Huskies will have to depend on running the ball. Just over 69% of the Huskies’ total offensive yards have come on the ground through the first two weeks of the season Syracuse will certainly prepare for that with their defensive schemes. Syracuse’s size advantage over UCONN will be another big factor as it was obvious in the way it dominated Power 5 Louisville. The Huskies look more like an FCS team at the line of scrimmage. The ‘Cuse has a 388-pound left guard, their tight ends weigh 270. Their receivers are 6-4, 6-5 and 6-6. Can you say David vs. Goliath?
Massey Composite has Syracuse ranked 58 and UCONN all the way down to 125, deservedly so. The Orange defense is very underrated. Last year, Syracuse finished 21st among FBS schools in average total yards of offense allowed (332.2). That’s going to hold up well against a one-dimensional undersized Uconn squad. Laying the wood with the Orange.
