Can they win together? Not likely. Not because Kiffin can't, but because Garrett probably won't be around to see it. As it stands, Garrett has himself a coach with a .363 career winning percentage, a guy with as many NCAA secondary violations as wins in his first -- well, only -- year at Tennessee. A coach who taunted, teased and tweaked so often he has a rule named after him in the SEC.
With the NCAA on the doorstep and Troy burning from inside out, it looks like Garrett put out the fire with gasoline. Coach after coach seemingly shunned interest because at least the word is out that the NCAA is about to bring the heavy artillery. So Garrett does the logical thing by bringing in the man-child coach who was a hostess away from putting Tennessee on proby.

The ucla 'ruins. All you usc haters talk about these sanctions, but up to now, it is all hearsay .Until the hammer falls, usc has done nothing wrong. We'll talk in feb,but right now, this "dream team" of a coaching staff with pete carroll's boys is the best thing that could have happened as far as recruiting goes. They had lost kyle prater and jessie scoggins, but now they are back because of kiffin. If kiffin is such a bad coach, why does he keep getting these top jobs? We know he looks like matt barkley's older brother,or the stud frat boy who bangs all the chicks, but is that really why? I know his wife is hot,but come on guys.....he must bring something to the table for pete carroll to promote him to offensive coord, then he goes to the raiders and becomes the youngest coach ever in the nfl, then to rocky top,and now to usc?All this in only 8 years? Is it really because he has a hot wife? Oh,and the guy who said ucla would win a pac-10 title before usc would?? You sir,are an idiot.

When you are at the bottom, there is only one direction you can go.
SC was there at one point before Carrol, right? Neuheisel is turning around the program, he is bringing in solid recruits something we had been lacking. Give him another year and I think everyone will be surprised at how well UCLA will be competing and will be fighting for the conference title. You can't turn a program around overnight. We were virtually in every game we played. Yea yea, I know that doesn't mean much but a vast improvement from years past but playing us wasn't something many teams were looking forward to.
Kap as much as it pains me to say it SC wont get hit hard with penalties, I mean really they are god in the NCAAs mind. I don't get how they avoid punishment everytime but why does anyone think this will be any different? What happened with Mcknight was so much worse than with Bush? I doubt it. They get hit with probation and lose a few scholarships, oh well, they will have walks-on who their boosters are paying for go to their school.
Also to those saying that Tennessee is a much better school to be at than SC are on some serious drugs. While location isn't everything it means a lot. Have you guys ever been to Southern California. Today, was the second week of Jan, 65 degrees and raining, the worst day weather-wise in weeks. It has been 75 and sunny the last week and its like that for like 355 days. We have beaches 15 minutes away, you want mountains go to Big Bear 2 hours away. Hollywood is down the street. Everything you want is out here, you tell me when you are recruiting a high school kid and tell them beaches, sunny-great weather, beautiful women compared to the middle of nowhere in Tennessee, what sounds more appealing? Just my opinion of course though.

USC is digging its own grave here. Under investigation for major violations that occured while Kiffin was the recruiting and offensive coordinator there. Kiffin puts himself under the NCAA microscope again at UT with 6 "minor" violations. and what does USC do? they bring him in to be their HC, along with Coach O, who is as shady as it gets. If you are a USC fan, alum, or supporter, tell me how you can honestly be happy with this? This makes absolutely no sense. Why would you want to put yourself even more at risk of being slammed by the NCAA by bringing in a guy with a career win % of .336????? just doesnt make sense....
and yes, Kiffin is as selfish as it gets. the man doesnt know anything about character or respect. He has got to be the luckiest man in the world. He is 34 yrs old and this is his 3rd head coaching gig. He has had no success as a HC, yet he continues to be given high level head coaching jobs, simply because of his last name.
and for those that dont understand why UT fans are upset, UT did this guy a favor by hiring him and giving him one of the best jobs in college football. They stuck their neck out for this guy. They backed him when everyone was crucifying him for his all his stupid immature remarks through his 14 months there. and do leave the way he did 3 weeks before signing day will set UT's program back several years. He was hired to do a job and he bailed. so to expect UT fans to "understand" simply because this was his "dream job" is asinine.
to all USC fans, DONT DRINK THE KOOL AID...this is a disaster in the making...USC can do so much better...

Daimond....smart man. Could not agree with you more. Also, understand the mtg. where he told the team became rather "hostile" in nature. He epitomizes alot of what is wrong in collegiate athletics imo.

The real problem with UCLA has been the lack of a top QB. The teams lately have been good enough to compete, but without a top QB, they couldn't get it done. Look at what happened to the Trojans last year. In the Pac10, teams must have a great QB to compete.
Until Rick figures that out, forget UCLA doing much better.

I have to agree with Westcoast here, everybody makes it sound like USC is going to get the death penalty, I just don't see how anybody reaches that conclusion. They lose a few scholarships so what, they get a one year post season ban again so what. Can anybody really think that it is going to be much harsher than that. If so, what has you leaning in that direction.
And as for Kiffin, how is what he did any worse than what Brain Kelly did? Kelly abandoned his team before the biggest game of everyone's life up to that point for that team. Kiffin is worse than Petrino? Come on. Saban? You guys are making it seem like what Kiffin did was unimaginable. Why? This happens all the time now, to think Kiffin did something nobody else has done/will do is naive. If Kiffin had stayed at Tennessee for two more years they would be at competing at the top of that conference. Look what he did in one year, with an incompetent quarterback for the 1st half the season. If you want to say that wasn't Kiffin, it was the people surrounding him, that is fine, those guys are following him to SC. As a Bruins fan, I think this was a terrible hire for us because of what Kiffin brings to the table.

I think many of you do not understand what a few scholarships a year will do to a team... Getting 20 players instead of 25 for a few years will hurt your program a ton, trust me......

Just my opinion of course though.
i was expecting a lot more from Rick by now. He put the fear in me when he was first hired. I thought he was a perfect fit, especially since he has just as big of an ego as Pete. But I havent been impressed with his recruiting. Still no big name QB or RB. He could be doing better. He has two more years, IMO.

Why are the Trojan fans not worried about sanctions? We've been following this for 5 years. Up to this point, nothing has pointed to the program itself. I have to hear USC was directly involved. Thats why if anything, they will get punished for lack of institutional control.
Why are we happy to have Kiffin? Because we know him. He's been here during the good times and is proven. I dont like him as the head coach, but I like the fact that he's bringing Ed Orgeron, Poppa Kiffin, and Tim Davis. The head coach is only as good as his staff. This staff is great.
I dont expect anyone outside of the Trojan family to understand the excitement, but we know whats going on, and considering the fact that we lose PC, this was the next best step. Everyones familiar with him, INCLUDING the players, which is most important. The players cant wait because there's no uncertainty.

Everyones familiar with him, INCLUDING the players, which is most important. The players cant wait because there's no uncertainty.
Sanctions or not, USC will remain a good team for a while..........good, but not great. They'll be on a slow slide for a few years as they ride the end of the wave that PC created (see LSU/Miles). Kiffin should be adequate enough to keep this team from the doldrums, but you just can't form & hold the type of coaching staffs that PC assembled for very long.
The Pac-10 title will now be up for grabs every year............& we may not see a Pac-10 team in the BCS CG for a spell.

damn, first you get dumped by Kiffin, than Cutcliffe dumps you.
Maybe Pat Summit can coach with Bruce Pearl as his assistant? He'd be a great recruiter.
How long till we hear Johnny Majors name pop up
What # was LK on USC's list? PC bailed, Riley turned you down, then Sark said no, Del Rio wanted no part.
so im guessing the conversation among the faculty at USC went something like this "PC bolted on us and the first 4 guys we wanted all turned us down. So who's dumb enough to come take this?" everyone looks at Mike Garrett...his response, "ill get on the phone with Kiffin"

What makes this even funnier is the fact that it's probably very accurate.
