It's that time again. After a long offseason away from ECU sports, I'm back in the saddle and ready for this one. You have to love these kinds of years, new staff, player turnover, new schemes, new formations, new offense and defense...it's a sports cappers dream, especially when they're in tune with the details of the team experience so much churn.
Luckily for our community here at Covers, I'll be that guy for East Carolina University.
ECU comes out as a 7 point home dog to this years version of the Golden Hurricane. Boy are we at an advantage for this line, folks. The first 3 games of the year we're going to rake.

most are very down on ECU this season but I'm not sure I think they will be as bad as everyone else does, if they have any offense at all they should be able to score at home on Tulsa, I don't really have a lean at this point but laying the points on the road is not something I can see myself doing here

Practice opens today for the Pirates and I'm hoping to get my first report to you guys late this afternoon. I know the players have been working hard and rallying around Boston College transfer QB, Dom Davis. It sounds like he's a workhorse and a leader in the huddle.
If the ECU defensive line can just hold their own, this ECU team is going to surprise a lot of people this year. The linebackers are TOUGH, the 2 corners are excellent and are NFL material. They'll need a JUCO transfer to step up at safety.
The offense should be leaps and bounds better than last season's ground and pound "let the defense win it" approach. There are weapons all OVER the field for ECU on offense with an experienced O-line.
The Pirates have a place kicker transfer from Maryland who is excellent and a solid punter. Not concerned about special teams.
With Tulsa having the absolute worst, and I do mean worst, offensive line in the country that allowed more sacks than anyone last season, I like the way our d-line matches up. The Hurricane defense is toilet paper weak...I'm just not seeing them giving 7 to the Pirates who are at home, brand new stadium expansion, sold out in front of 50k fans, live on ESPN...someone please tell me what I'm missing at this point.
The problem is, odds makers are reading publications. They see ECU lost 28 seniors and an entire coaching staff. This is why we make so much money early with ridiculous lines like this one.

All of these players have experience (besides the ONE freshman...who is a beast by the way) on the field and were on the team of the past 2 conference USA champs who knocked off 4 consecutive top 25 teams and had appearances in the top 25 themselves...as high as #14 nationally. They have all played in those games as Holtz rotated players in and out constantly. That is a key point. They've already lined up against this Tulsa team and beat their brains in to the tune of 44-21 or some shit.
An intangible here is that these guys know and expect to win football games in C-USA. They are 21-4 in C-USA over the past 4 years with several wins over top 25 teams (Boise State, Virginia Tech, Houston, West Virginia, and others).
They've played in big time arenas (A sold out Bank of America Stadium, Blacksburg, Morgantown, NC State, the Liberty twice against SEC teams...etc.).
They're not brand new to ECU football. They've been here and they've practiced against several NFL drafted players on top of that...day in and day out on the Cliff Moore practice facility.
For these guys, who have seen considerable time on the field, to be dogs at home against a team they beat the life out of last year, is an absolute head scratcher.

Yeah, Dom Davis getting reps and wins as a true freshman was great experience for him. He's got confidence and he's got ability. This offense doesn't really ask you to throw it down the field too often. As i'm sure you're aware, it uses a QB who's smart and knows what reads to make on short, quick passes. We'll see how he does with it. His previous QB coach, Steve Logan at BC, said that Dom Davis is an extremely talented QB and should have no issues running the spread for ECU. That guy is one hell of a QB coach (Jeff Blake and David Garrard come to mind...not to mention Marcus Crandell). He just knows talent when he sees it. We'll have to see what happens over Fall practice. I think experience and maturity are big here but if he can't get it done, I'm confident in the freshman Carden out of Texas who was previously being recruited by Texas Tech to take over the reigns at some point. He's now a Pirate and is in the mix.

With ECU's corners, we should be able to man up on wideouts and hopefully those blitzes get home. The ECU defense had Kinne running for his life last year without bringing any blitz packages. They are truly awful. ECU never blitzed last year...and I mean never.
I will say that if anyone knows how to defend the spread it should be this Texas Tech staff. They practically invented the offense (at least at the college level) and you can bet your sweet ass that Lincoln Riley can run it.

I ate lunch with a big Tulsa alum this week and I told him that Paul Smith won me alot of but that he's gone now. blah blah... He said the offense will fire hot again this year but.....
The canes of Tulsa still have virtually no defense. If your fellas can get a few points in this one, they might just win SU.

What's your overall take on the Pirates repeat CUSA champs?
Overall take on ECU to repeat is really going to depend on how they get out of the gates. With 2 conference games against Tulsa and Memphis respectively right out of the shoot, those are two games you're looking at as must wins. If they come out and fall on their face, little to no chance of a 3-peat. If they can knock off Tulsa and Memphis, then get some good reps in against VT and UNC in consecutive weekends...I like our chances going into the game against Southern Miss. Injuries will be big. If ECU takes that game against the Golden Eagles and are sitting at 3-0 in conference they've got a great shot. Marshall blows. I'm not impressed by Rice, SMU or UAB at all (who is?). UCF is the only other imminent threat to a 3rd straight East Division Crown at that point.
