No, but when you're a program like USC, your top 10 list will be marvelous no matter how you look at it. I dont think they thought Kiffin was available. He's a way better hire than their so called #1 choice (Riley). Better fit than Del Rio, based on his familiarity with recruiting.
Dont forget, Pete Carroll was the 6th choice. That turned out ok.
Gotta look at the big picture with this hire. I dont know if you realize what he's bringing, in terms of a coaching staff.

their best memories were at USC. Pete and Norm supposedly didnt get along. Pete didnt like Chow getting so much credit when he was the OC at USC. He was jealous.

yes, its an all star staff. Name better coaching staffs than what USC is about to get in Kiffin, EO, and Chow?
There are certainly a couple of programs with better staffs (certainly Bama), but you cant count pass 5 trying to figure out a better staff.
Take a look at Neuheisel's staff. Its a joke.

USC can go on probation at it would be equal. You have to realize, what ever penalties come their way won't demolish the program. you wont see multiple year post season bans. We'll be talking about how USC got away with murder. I can see the threads already.

really? First, take the Tenn goggles off.
second, Kiffin is a USC guy. He knows it very well, as well as the recruiting base. Its a natural fit.
not arguing fan base or facilities. Tenn has great ones. takes more than that to be successful. Fans dont play the game.
Finally, lets take a look at Los Angeles vs. Knoxville? Way more exposure in LA, maybe not always a good thing.
And that lousy Pac10? The one with a shitty UCLA team who just went into Knoxville and beat UT? Oh yeah, that one.

UT has taken small steps backwards? Fullmer left that program in shambles. 7-6 was ok this year at UT.

USC just won 9 games and everyone says the program is done. If Kiffin had won 9 this year at UT, the stadium would be names after him
i hate he left not because of him leaving..the timing and who he is taking with him is what bothers me..he did the same ill bring my daddy and a bunch of good coaches with me when we hired him..and we were saying the same things you guys are now... people of that character tend to not turn out to be the best leaders. if we can hire someone in the next couple of days and keep our recruits we will be fine.
timing sucks. but its life. Timing sucked for Pete to leave USC, but I didnt take it personally.
The funny thing is Vols nation was absolutely thrilled to be 7-6 this year, now you want to say he's overrated?
