beechernic - the option is about discipline.. nothing more than that..If a team stays disciplined for 60 minutes..they can stop it.. But you rarely see that..
The option is about, time of possession... Discipline ... and blocking..
The Pros are running it.. "Wild Cat" Formations.... It's just a version of the flex option or triple option..
And it's effective because it's hard to defend...not because teams don't see it...
Teams have been running this offense for a 100 years...
Why don't teams run it more? Well, Because coaches cant sale it to top notch athletes coming into college... " It's not Flashy "....
You know why I know the option is effective.... Look at Navy's team and the size and caliber of athletes they have.... They shouldn't even compete with Division 1 A Teams...

Whodey....You really don't have a clue on how the option works do you? I have went over this many many times on here about how to...and be successful against the option.
Linebackers having speed has ZERO to do with stopping the option...Ask Miami last year when they played G.T on that Thursday night when G.T racked up 500 yds rushing on them. AND BTW.....Miami has as much " Overall speed " as any team in the nation.
The option is about " The Dive Play"... You must defend it....Navy and teams that run the option will show you " The Dive " over and over until you bite on it too early...Then comes the Pitch..Then Comes Mid line..The comes Counter..Then Comes reverse...then comes Pass......
Notre Dame will win this game..I believe N.D has too much offense for Navy... the line is what -11 or 10.5... IMO..The game will be much too close for comfort. Im staying away just because I could see where N.D pulls away and score late to cover the spread...But, if you think N.D Will just stop the option....Your crazy bro...Nobody stops the option... IMO more teams should run it..
This is what the forum is for...right? Now, let's hear your rebuttal..
Trust me I know all about the option. Trust me I ran the option for years in both middle school and high school and was one of the tailbacks in running it. Now on to your points. The dive play is what I was talking about that I was more worried about than anything. Because what I was saying about the actual option play is I think our linebackers can cover some ground not allowing teams to actually get the corner. That being said. The cutback is always available as well, and is where over pursuing might be a problem. Which I stated somewhere in this thread. When they run the option and actually bring the QB and RB out I don't think that Navy can actually get to the corner. If you understand what my thoughts on this are. Now with the dive play, the first read for the Quarterback. This is where I'm just a tad worried Navy could chew us up. I really think Notre Dame can contain the option because last year they showed that they could. I guarantee even though they probably shouldn't have, they put in extra work to prepare for it this weekend. In preparing for Wazzou I mean. The counter play could be a big play too, because of our defense over pursuing. The passing out of the option doesn't necessarily concern me much because I think we will really be able to get pressure up front. The cut blocking of Navy is another thing that concerns me injuries and such to take place. That cut block is a brutal block and if you don't see it coming then it can really tear you up. I think If Notre Dame can not so much just completely stop the option, because like you said its pretty hard to do. But just contain it, not allow the big play, get them in tougher situations then yeah I think they can have a lot of success against it. I'd really like to see us shut it down completely but of course that will not happen. But again my point about the linebackers is that I just don't think that they will be able to get the corner thats all. I didn't really want to get into a whole mess about what to do when defending the option like who has the QB who has the RB and all that type of stuff. It was just a statement for big plays. I just don't think they will be able to make big plays. I will give you this it is tremendously hard to defend, because I know when we ran it shit I remember in 8th grade we beat a team 77-0. It was pretty brutal they could just not stop our attack. Almost unbelievable really. Its not like we were even running up the score either. Anyways thats all I was getting at. I know what the option is, I know how it is ran. I know what it does, and how it can be effective. I thought you'd give me a little more credit than that. Football is pretty much my life bro, I know everything there is pretty much to know about the sport in general.

whodey, one of the best writeups i have ever seen on this site in the past few years, with the exception that you are the biggest ND homer of all time....jokes aside, seriously great info, ND is the play, and I surely hope it is for your sake, not that you care what peeps say on here but you are truly putting yourself out there for this game and i appreciate your confidence WITH evidence
Yeah I mean even if it doesn't come in, which I have no doubts that it will. I'm not even worried about backlashing from people. It's not really a matter of that. I just think this is a great spot for people to back the Irish for once. I really don't think it was that great of a writeup good but not great. But if you read the whole thread and read a lot of my posts in the thread then I think it turns into a great writeup. Because of course people have questions and doubts and concerns and I like to answer that type of stuff. That is what I really like to do. It honestly really helps me see things even better than I feel I already do. Thanks for the props. Good luck on your plays. Stay cool.

Waiting for the line to go up to 14 and take the points. Navy will continue to run the ball no matter what. ND cant afford to make mistakes because Navy will continue to run the ball and control the clock. Navy by far will be the most discipline team that ND has faced thus far. Keep in mind this is still a rivalry game even though ND is overratted.

It is a rivalry...It seems like Notre Dame plays a rival game every week. I hate that we have so many damn rivalries. I don't think it reaches 14. Notre Dame hasn't made mistakes this season, so I don't know where you get that idea. Clausen has 2 ints. One slipped through the Running backs hands and the other was a hail mary. So the Irish haven't really made mistakes. That logic kinda stupid. Navy is very disciplined though you are right. One of the least penalized teams in the country. Notre Dame isn't overrated. Floyd changes the whole team around. The dynamic of this team is completely different when he is on the field. Good luck if you play Navy this weekend, watch the game, watch Floyd play....

That team didn't come around till 4 games ago because they played good teams early...anyway. You worry about games in 1993 but this season don't mean shit. Your cracking me up...I have the total at 55.
Which obviously isn't going to be the total...
Notre Dame will score at will..
I was right on the total, but my statement below it...

It also takes discipline to run. You have to have a smart/agile line , a smart/agile qb and fullbacks and running backs that arent too shabby. Most teams have 320 lb linemen so pulling or getting on the outside is not gonna happen for 4 quarters....Most qb wouldnt make it the whole season running the ball...they get smacked a ton when the defense pounces at the right time....For instance, 98 pound Jacory Harris would be pronounced dead after a game or two....

I'm on ND big here. They play one of if not the toughest schedule in college football. Navy plays against teams that are two levels below ND's status. And with Floyd back for the game, ND finds their groove and lays it on that navy D. Score is gonna 45-24 notre dame rolls...... GO IRISH!!! BOL
Navy took Ohio State to the brink this season and put up 27 points on an excellent defense...this team can score points.

I remember watching this game. I remember watching Ohio State let up at several points. It seemed they had the game pretty much in the bag at a couple points. Also...Ohio State's offense is absolutely terrible..they hung 31 points on Navy.
It was 29-14 with around 6 minutes left, and then Navy hit an 85 yard pass to get it to 21-29.
Anyhow..that was week 1. Navy can score points.. They have been held under 20 points only 3 times this season. 14, 16 ,10.
Plus you have to remember that Navy is in a classic look ahead spot with Delaware on deck
That was a joke.
Even I really don't think Notre Dame hits 40 this week. They have only scored 40 points once this season.

Boom - we obviously have different opinions about NDs ability to run the option, but fundimentally the opinions are the same. I wont discuss the Wildcat and the option because I dont agree, but I WILL say you stressing the dificulty of defending the option makes me contemplate my pick.
THAT, my friend, is a great arguement. THAT, my friend, is a great rebuttal. This was obviously a Pro-Notre Dame thread, and you added very poetically, and with fact based opinions, to the contrary.
I want to take a moment this morning to thank you for being constructive in your disagreement. There is way too much blind bashing that goes on in this Effin Forum. And your eloquent tone has come across very effective. Thank you.

When discussing THIS option style, we all need to remeber that many teams run a variation of the option. FLA, WVU, ORE, UTA, etc... (the list can go on). But those teams just run the QB read (dive/veer) option.
The option Navy, Army, GT, AF run is more the hidden ball trick. Its a SOLID triple option with more options off of it. I dont think we all need to agree on what side of the spread we pick, but (for those that really know) lets try to address for others what Navy will really be running.

Big Irish fan here hope they pull this one out!! Navy is tough against the pass for example WAKE and we cant seem to stop anyone. I just hope we get the W. GL on your play.

You've missed several points, Navy hasn't really played anyone that can fling the ball around like us though. Comparing Wake's passing game to ours...really? We have been good against the run in the last 4 games...We will get the W+cover.

JoeFan - The best passing attack that Navy has faced is SMU. Statistically speaking..
You are right and they kept them under control in that game. Mitchell was 19-41 200 yds. MC Neal was the one that hurt em rushing for 136. I just think we are gonna have a hard time with these guys. Navy overlooked Temple last week thinking about this game and I think the Midshipmen matchup tough against us. We'll see I hope we get the W and you get the cover but I'm nervous.

Personally I'm not nervous at all...and comparing Bo Levi Mitchell to Jimmy Clausen
Games I've been nervous... Boston College Michigan State Michigan Purdue
Game I wasn't nervous... Nevada USC Washington State
USC - I just wasn't nervous I was more pumped than anything...

The key to this game is getting the running game going. If we can run successfully against Navy, the Irish will have a big day. If not it's gonna be tight.

Whodey..The Wahington Post today, has an article in it about the Navy team being banged up on D....Dobbs will start...TB Curry is doubtful...3 starters on D..Had green jerseys at practice yesterday..A LB,safety and CB..all should play though...No bye week 4 the Middies leaves them a little ,not a good thing with the Irish off of a scrimmage against WState last week.....I think JC will put up 40+ points on our Middies on Saturday....

Yeah I saw all of that...Joefan is right, which I think we will be able to establish a running game we in my opinion are 10x better on the ground than last year. JC might put up some points for sure. 40 we have only hit once, but of course it could happen. I'd like for us to hang 50+ on a team already. Mike Floyd coming back is like Christmas for me...I can't wait to see him on the field. I love that dude.
