Playoff Rankings Are A Joke...

Bama pulls a #5 ranking and is ready to slide into the top 4 if Georgia loses. Wow, didn't see that one coming. 

The PAC 12 is pretty much out...Oregon is going to have to beat a ranked Utah team by 50+ to get a slot.

FWIW, here's my view of what the current rankings should be:

1)Clemson : An undefeated defending champion is #1 until proven otherwise.
2) LSU: Smoked Bama, unbeaten
3) OSU: Wrecking crew all year long. Very impressive...
4) Oregon: 1 loss on the road. The PAC isn't great, but they will show up better than you think in the bowls.

The rest:
#5 Minnesota: Unbeaten. If they run the table, they should get a playoff berth.
#6 Baylor: Unbeaten. If they run the table, they should be in the hunt.
#7 Alabama- Have to respect the machine, but not gift them anything
#8 Georgia- Lost as a 24 pt favorite at home. What a joke.

Or, you could eliminate a non-conference game and bump the playoff field to 16. There will always be bubble arguments, but at least the top 8 are guaranteed entry.

This "best team on a week-to-week basis" is garbage. 25 guys sitting around computers trying to figure out some crazy riddle...it really isn't that hard unless you are trying to make sure certain squads are in and others are out 3 weeks ahead of time.

Barring a loss to Auburn, the Playoff Committee will not realize that this years is Alabama the same team as Oklahoma with more seasoned coach

I'm not disagreeing with you, but in a Bowl game neutral field, would you take Oregon SU over Bama?

Oregon - 1 loss on the road to the probably the 5th best SEC team on a neutral filed with a true freshman starting his firs game for Auburn vs Top 5 pick Herberts a returning senior....an_roll_laugh....How will this loss look when Bama beats Auburn in Auburn...The so called Pac 12 champ could not beat the the 5th best SEC team....

It’s not just about wins and loses. Have to consider Strength of Schedule. Alabama had 2 weeks to prepare and loses at home. There schedule is weak. Burrow may have knocked them out already even if Alabama wins out. And defense has given up too many points this year. Depends how the rest of the contenders playout. Alabama needs to blow out everyone the rest of the way and Auburn is no slouch. And what about TUA?

Why should Clemson be #1? They have played absolutely no one and could have lost to a .500 North Carolina team. How many teams would be undefeated if they played Clemson’s schedule? Talk about gifting a team to the playoffs. The ACC is by far the worst power 5 conference.

confused..How much points did LSU give up...It was a 5 point loss to the #1 team in the country.....IF everything plays out and do expect Auburn to beat Georgia this week...then Bama beat Auburn. who will be ranked on the top 10..Bama will get in over all other 1 loss teams assuming everything play out...LSU/TSOU/Clemson win out...

College football is too fluid on a year to year basis for the defending champion to automatically qualify for anything. That logic holds no water in my eyes; Clemson has proved nothing this year except for maybe the fact that the ACC might be the weakest Power 5 conference in football.

 

Why do they even release playoff rankings prior to the actual selection in December? To get us to talk about them; they serve no other purpose. And here we are...blabbering away.

 

The path is clear: LSU is probably in even with a loss to UGA in the SECCG, Ohio State can probably afford a loss to either PSU or Michigan as long as they win the Big10, but this open the door for a few other scenarios. Clemson, Minnesota, and Baylor absolutely have to win out to have a chance. If UGA wins out, the committee will not leave a 1-loss SEC Champ, and the team that beat LSU, out of the playoffs. I think Bama, Oklahoma, or the PAC12 Champ will need a little help to get in, probably in the form of getting the BIG10 out of the picture.

Also Georgia being #4 does not matter...IF they win out..they are in...They could be #7 right now and it does not matter...

I've been trying to pound this into folks' heads since last night. The Bama crowd was up in arms. The path for UGA is very simple, they won't leave out a 1-loss SEC Champ.

 

Is the committee sending a message to top programs that good wins outweigh bad losses? Then again, Clemson contradicts that theory with their only "good" win over Texas A&M who is clearly not who we thought they might be coming into the year.

I think the committee pretty much ranks them in these tiers. Bama is the wild card this year because they don't control their own destiny.

Undefeated conference champ.

1 loss conference champ.

Best 1 loss team.

Clemson has won 25 games in a row. Beat Bama by 100. Until proven otherwise, that's the champ. 

And, by the way, they are covering every week now. If they are only 1 pt better than UNC, I suggest you take the points vs Clemmy every week.

Does Bama have a quality win this season? I can't find one...

At least Oregon will have a chance to boat race a top 10 Utah team with an elite defense...and they likely will. Utah can't score.

This conversation proves how stupid the whole playoff system is. I agree it is better than the BCS, but now style points are being awarded, which is exactly what the playoff was supposed to eliminate.
About the only way the FBS takes a reasonable approach and expands to 8 or 12 teams is if Bama gets left out this year. Then, next spring we will see the SEC petition for the 8 team tourney.

Bama gets the biggest, strongest, and fastest every year. And, for some reason, they would rather run spread offense instead of destroying teams up front. 

They are in the process of giving away their program's competitive advantage.

What was the incentive for Oregon to play Auburn to begin with? None. Same as scheduling North Dakota State....no point and that's why no one does it.

Better to pound Western Carolina and flex for 60 minutes.

If the neutral field is the Rose Bowl, I'd consider it.

If it's the Sugar Bowl, probably not. 

Personally, I hope Oregon gets in...makes my Montana Griz 35-3 loss at Autzen earlier this year look better...Oregon has already bumped UM's FCS rankings all year long. Gave that "strength of schedule a kick in the azz.

Dave, I honestly don't care. PAC 12, SEC, it's all the same. 20 year olds trying to keep the wheels on and not melt down week-to-week. If you are all in on the SEC, then bet on them in the bowls and against the PAC. It's that easy.

Just curious, how many points will you give me in the Bama @ Auburn game? You are sold its an auto Bama win, I'm not.
