Teams that need to show me something....... 2016

First off, as always these are my observations from watching 14+ hours of college football every Saturday along with Thursday night ACC/AAC, Friday night Mountain West, weeknight MACtion and 60 minute replays of games on Big10 Network.

There is a lot of transition this year, lots of Senior talent graduated, guys that we counted on week in and week out for 3-4 years are gone and leave big voids. Group of 5 conference guys like Kenneth Dixon, Rashard Higgins, and Tyler Ervin. Others like Keenan Reynolds, Trevone Boykin and Brandon Doughty who could win games themselves are gone leaving big questions with their replacements.

Here we go.... things I want/need to see this season:

Big 10

Ohio State- Find a closer The Buckeyes only return 6 total starters from last years team (fewest in FBS). The most glaring loss will be the absence of Ezekiel Elliot. Elliot was the one constant over the last 2 seasons. He is the one guy who could take over the game when the QB's were struggling last year. He alone bailed them out against Indiana and he punished teams in the 4th quarter. Whether it be Mike Weber, Bri'onte Dunn or Curtis Samuel, the Buckeyes have to find someone to finish teams off, especially in the 2nd half of their schedule where they go @Wisconsin, @Penn St (both Badgers and Nittany Lions will be off byes) vs. NW, vs. Nebraska, @Maryland, @ Michigan State and finish with Michigan at home.

Michigan- Senior leadership The Wolverines will have Seniors starting at RB, TE, WR, 3/5ths of the OL, and up to 8 on defense including the entire defensive backfield. This class has lost 6 consecutive games to rivals Michigan State and Ohio State over the last 3 seasons. If there is a year for them to beat one or both, this is it, and they will have to do it on the road.

Michigan State- Endurance Breaking in a new starting QB and losing your top 2 WR's is tough, but doing with the Spartans schedule will be even harder. They open with Furman, have a bye and then play 11 straight weeks starting in South Bend. That is not an ideal situation on either end of the schedule, although they do catch Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State at home. My biggest questions are will they be in sync early and will they be exhausted late?

Iowa- Play with expectations The Hawkeyes finished a great season with a thud in the Rose Bowl after losing a heart breaker to Michigan State in the Big 10 Championship Game with a Playoff spot on the line. Now they return as the favorite to win the Big 10 West with a schedule that doesn't get interesting until mid October. A lot is expected from a team that hasn't been ranked in the preseason since 2010. The biggest question is exactly how good were they last year? This years schedule is back loaded with much better teams than they faced down the stretch last year.

Nebraska- Make 1 more play The Huskers lost 7 games last year. Those games were lost by 5, 3, 1, 2, 2, 10, and 8 points. These guys are not far from being a 10 win team again and contending for the West crown.

Northwestern- Sustained success In 2012 Northwestern went 10-3 and won the Gator Bowl. After that they stumbled to back to back 5-7 seasons before returning to 10-3 last year. Half of their starters are gone from both sides of the ball, but they keep RB Justin Jackson and QB Clayton Thorson will improve. They also return their top 2 tacklers and pass rushers. A 3-0 start is a must if they want to return to a Bowl game this year, Western Michigan will be tricky in Week 1. Last year they upset Stanford at home in Week 1 and built on that momentum.

SECAlabama-  Find a closer    Same as Ohio State, the Tide need to replace a bruising back who could take pressure off of the QB and win or finish a game.  Over the years the torch has been passed from Ingram to Richardson to Lacy to Yeldon and then to Derrick Henry.  Now whether it will be Bo Scarborough or Damien Harris, they will need to find the closer fairly early as the middle of the schedule has road games @ Arkansas, Tennessee, and LSU between October 15th and November 5th.LSU-  The forward pass   Yes, this is the same thing I said last year.  Yes, Brandon Harris improved their overall passing numbers, BUT in their 3 game losing streak when Leonard Fournette was slowed down by Bama, Arkansas and Mississippi, Brandon Harris was 53 of 105 with a 3 TD&#x27;s and 4 INT&#x27;s.  Still not good enough with the 2 NFL caliber WR&#x27;s he has in Dural and Dupre.  Mississippi-  Nothing to lose?   Still awaiting word from the NCAA about sanctions against the Rebels has me thinking they are in an interesting situation.  If a post season ban is handed down (at this point it&#x27;s possible, but I don&#x27;t know how soon it would happen or what season it would affect) the Rebels could play with a devil may care attitude and be a serious wild card for opponents.  This is something to monitor as the weeks go bye.  Auburn-  Survive September   Coming off a disappointing season the Tigers get a brutal opening month.  Even though all 4 games are at home, they face Clemson followed by a sandwich game with Arkansas State (and we know they can lose this game, they nearly lost to Jacksonville State in a similar situation last year) then Texas A&amp;M and LSU.  2-2 is a best case scenario.  1-3 is likely and 0-4 is not out of the question.  See how they play in Week 1 because Arkansas State in Week 2 could be a great play.  Texas A&amp;M-  Turn over and Turnovers     The revolving door at QB currently has Oklahoma transfer Trevor Knight at the helm.  He has a career 25/19 TD/INT ratio, which does not help an Aggies team that ranked 103rd last year in turnovers lost.  He must protect the ball and bring stability to a position that saw 3 QB&#x27;s attempt at least 75 passes last season.Mississippi State-   Replace all-time production  Dak Prescott is gone, taking his 19 wins the last 2 seasons, his school record 9300 passing yards and the 39 TD&#x27;s he was responsible for last season with him.   Looks bleak, right?   Well, if they get some decent QB play the schedule actually could work out for them to be sitting at 3-1 before October starts.  The next 3 weeks may tell the story of their season as they could become Bowl eligible with Auburn, BYU and Kentucky to open October.  That is when they will have to do it, because it&#x27;s a brutal stretch to end the season.  This will be interesting to watch because I doubt anyone will be very interested in them this year.

Pac 12Washington-   Take the next step   Most of us here are high on the Huskies, a young team with a proven winner at Head Coach in a conference that is going to be tough, yet wide open.  The reason to like them is that they get a great opportunity with their schedule to build off of last years success.  A 4-0 start is definitely in play before back to back games against Stanford and Oregon.  After those games it&#x27;s another stretch where they can go at least 3-2 before the Apple Cup.  This will be the toughest conference to figure out.  So long as Jake Browning doesn&#x27;t see a large regression in his completion percentage the Huskies will be dangerous in every game.  I love them this year, but with a tempered enthusiasm as they may be over-valued against the lesser teams.Stanford-  Keep scoring    Trivia time! Which Pac12 team has scored 30 or more points in 13 straight games going back to Week 2 of last year?  Oregon... Nope.  Washington State.... wrong again.   Stanford?   Yep.  Since their Week 1 loss at Northwestern the Cardinal rattled off at least 30 in every game including over 40 7 times.  QB Kevin Hogan is gone, but Christian McCaffrey is still there as are both speedy WR&#x27;s Michael Rector and Bryce Love.  Not to mention that most of the defenses the Cardinal will face will be more than happy to give up points.Oregon-   Strong 2nd half     Last year the Ducks turned it on in their last 6 games of the regular season going 6-0 and they should be primed to do it again this year after their bye on October 15th.  4 road games (@ Cal, USC, Utah, Oregon St) and 2 in Eugene against Arizona St and Stanford are on the docket.  Similar to last season, this should be the time when whomever the QB is will have a full grasp of the offense and their speed will begin to overwhelm tired opponents.California-   Points?    (Last year this read "Points!")   Davis Webb is a capable replacement for Jared Goff.   That won&#x27;t be the problem...  the problem will be the guys who he will be throwing to.  The Golden Bears lose their top 6 WR&#x27;s from last year, that includes 265 receptions and 38 TD&#x27;s.  This is not good for a team that lost every game that they failed to hit 30 points in last season.  UCLA-   Avoid a Sophomore Slump    Last year Josh Rosen impressed me, now he has the reigns but he will have zero returning starters at a skill position this year and only 1 of which had more than 10 receptions.  It will be interesting to see how he handles  adversity this year, and he will have adversity in Week 1 against the pass rushers from Texas A&amp;M.Utah-    Next man up    The Utes lose dual threat QB Travis Wilson, leading rusher and #3 receiver Devontae Booker, top WR Britain Covey, #2 receiver and 4 of their top 5 tacklers.  On the bright side, top PK Andy Phillips returns.   Don&#x27;t forget this team was ranked as high as #3 last year before fading down the stretch.  They will have a tough time, but their road schedule is not hard so they will have plenty of chances for the new players to succeed.

Big 12Oklahoma-   One to play with?   As in 1 loss to play with.  Their schedule is expected to be strong enough that they would get a Playoff invite even with loss.  The problem is, a lot of that will depend on what comes of the teams that are supposed to be good on their schedule.  What if Houston nose dives?  An injury to Greg Ward would make that happen.  What if Ohio State loses 3 games?  What if Texas sucks.  What if TCU and Baylor both tank.  All of the sudden there is no good loss on the schedule and without a conference championship game the 1-loss Sooners could get left out.Oklahoma State-   Avoid the late season loss   The Cowboys will have talent on offense, returning 10 starters and adding Stanford transfer Barry Sanders.   WR James Washington is blazing fast...keep an eye on him.   This team has lost at least 1 of their last 2 games in each of the last 5 seasons, 4 times ranked in the top 10.  This year it will be hard to avoid again, as they finish with road games @TCU and @Oklahoma.Kansas-   1 win (again)     Rhode Island?  Ohio U?  Memphis?  Iowa State?  Only 2 conference wins the last 5 seasons.  If it&#x27;s not in Week 1 there&#x27;s always 2017.......ACCLouisville-   2nd half growth   The Cardinals play their 2 biggest conference games in the first 5 weeks of the season, then after a bye they have 7 games where they could face only 1 winning team.  This team was young last year and rebounded well after losing their first 3 games all by 1 score.  They must keep their heads up if they lose to both Florida State and Clemson.

AACNavy-  Fill big shoes   Not only does Navy lose all time touchdown scorer Keenan Reynolds, they lose 9 other starters on the offense.  Luckily, 6 of the new starters are Seniors so while they may lack on-field experience, they will have leadership and knowledge of the system.  The schedule is loaded in between a pair of byes.Tulane-  Transition to the new offense    New HC Willie Fritz brings his spread option to a team that passed more than it ran last year.  It will be a huge task for a team that struggled as badly as Tulane did last year.  Their special teams were atrocious last season, keep an eye out early in the year to see if that improved or not. Cincinnati-   Someone to catch the ball     The Bearcats are losing their top 6 WR&#x27;s from last season.  Fortunately for them, they have two QB&#x27;s who are capable of making the new guys transition easily into the offense.  South Florida-   Continued improvement   The Bulls have doubled their win total each of the last 2 seasons going from 2 to 4 and then to 8 last year.  They will be playing with high expectations this year, but with strong QB play from Quinton Flowers and strong running from Marlon Mack they will contend for the title in the East.Temple-   Do it again    PJ Walker improved greatly last year, Jahad Thomas turned into a stud and the defense and special teams impressed.   Now they have to do it again.  These guys can build a winning attitude here.  The WR&#x27;s are young but made big plays last year.  The defense loses top LB Tyler Matakevich but are still very experienced.  Central Florida-  Bounce back   Last years 0-12 was a fluke.  Injuries ravaged the offense at QB and WR.  They return an FBS best 92% of their roster from last season.  Justin Holman will have a good year.  Jordan Akins will have a good year catching the ball.  The early schedule is tough with back to back games against Big 10 opponents (Michigan and Maryland) but I&#x27;ll be looking at these guys as an ATS steal in conference.

Mountain WestBoise State-   Revenge tour   The Broncos will get an opportunity to avenge all 4 of their losses from last season.  2 games will be at home (Utah State, BYU) and 2 on the road (New Mexico, Air Force).   The Broncos also lost at least one conference game as a double digit favorite again last year, making that trend applicable 5 of the last 6 years.  Air Force-  Home cooking    The Falcons have won 12 straight home games over the last 2 seasons.  This year they should have no problem in their first 2 games (Abilene Christian and Georgia State) before a test from Navy.  They finish with Boise State at home in what could determine the Mountain division.San Diego State-  Plans for New Years    I&#x27;ll say it.  I LOVE this team.  They run with speed and power.  They play defense.  The schedule is there for an undefeated season.  They catch Cal after their trip from Australia and before Texas.  They have 2 long trips to Northern Illinois and South Alabama, but I believe they are ready for those as they have played well traveling east in the past few years.  I really think it&#x27;s their conference to lose.Hawaii-   Points on the road    Last season the Rainbow Warriors were not Road Warriors.   Getting shut out in their first 3 road games by a combined 121-0 left plenty of room for improvement before they finally showed some life in games at New Mexico and Nevada.   They will be put to the test again in games @ Michigan and Arizona in September along with their opener against Cal in Sydney, Australia.  Conference USALouisiana Tech-  Find some scoring     Losing all time college great Kenneth Dixon hurts, hell... even losing Jeff Driskel hurts.  That&#x27;s over 50 TD&#x27;s gone from last years 9 win team, and factor in the losses of 9 starters on defense this may be a tough year for the Bulldogs.  The schedule eases up in the later part of the year when some new guys should be stepping up, so they need to be on the radar as a team to play on around mid-October.UTEP-  Make use of the unintended experience   This team was ravaged by injuries last year forcing the team to use players who weren&#x27;t ready or even putting players into new positions mid-week.  Top RB Aaron Jones should return to his form and be a deadly weapon against a schedule that is weak.  This is another team that will be under the radar most of the year.

buckeye fan here and I agree with your sentiments on the young bucks. word out of camp is that you will see a regression from the power spread urban is know for in the 614 back to his style he ran in Gainesville when he had demps rainy percy and aaron hernandez... and yes urban recruited him knowing he was a murderer lol.. brionte dunn is out. in Columbus if you play football and you look breathe or think about looking of breathing on a woman wrong you are out. so dunn found the doghouse from a domestic violence issue, hes done. from what im reading dontre Wilson curtis Samuel and mike webber will all see significant time and will all be on the field at times. some of the tight ends were interviewed after tis weekends scrimmage and apparently the progrssions on a large % of plays have changed from 3 and 4 to 1 and 2. so expect urban to lean on the tight ends a bit more this year... just me 2 pennies

Awesome thread man!  I share your opinion about SDSU.  Many believe Boise St. will get back on top in the Mountain West, but these Aztecs could very well go unbeaten when looking at their schedule.  Good luck this year brother!

I don&#x27;t know how much longer I can wait for Dontre Wilson to become a key piece of the offense....  been hearing how great he is since his first Spring Game, yet the only thing that stands out about his years there so far is him getting kicked out of the Michigan game for fighting.

Aztecs were one of my top plays last year, I caught on to them as just as they started their streak of 8 straight double digit wins and 7 straight covers plus the dominant wire-to-wire blowout of Cincinnati in the Bowl game.   And to think how far they came from their Bowl game loss in 2014 against Navy where they could barely complete a forward pass to last year with Smith being an effective game manager.  Now to this year with Chapman adding his ability to run and complete passes at good percentage, this offense should be humming right out of the gate.  Like I said, they get Cal coming back from Hawaii and an off week.  Traveling to DeKalb is never easy, but the Aztecs have traveled east once in each of the last 2 years and nearly pulled off an upset in North Carolina and played well last year at Penn St.    A revenge game at South Alabama comes after their bye, I have the Jaguars struggling this season with a lot of new players and unproven QB play.  In conference, they host UNLV then travel to Fresno who lost their best player Marteze Waller and then get San Jose state who lost their top threat Tyler Ervin.  Tricky games at Utah State and at Nevada are the only dangerous spots in conference and those aren&#x27;t until the end of October and early November.

Damm fine work man................That&#x27;s a GREAT way to view things.........a &#x27;theme&#x27;  for each team going forwardHe&#x27;s not saying FADE Sparty...just that there will be challenges  *when everyone is talking Michigan / Ohio State.....IGNORING Dantonio / Sparty.......I will look HARD....to playing them LATE.....a GREAT coach&#x27;s teams...usually get better as the season wears on.........WEAK coach?....his team will fade (athleticism rules early in a game / season &gt;&gt; coaching influence matters later......)

I think you are wrong about the keys for Bama... I think we are converting to a spread offense. If you look at our core of receivers, Ridley, Stewart, several others, and the fact that we are recruiting QBs that are dual threats or have great escapability, you can see it coming. With Henry, we were able to pound teams into submission over the course of the game, and even though Bo is capable of that, I see him being used more so in the pistol and shotgun formations. So, based on this I think the big question is going to be which QB is going to step up.

Hackenburg was a square peg in a round hole, immobile target that seemed like he was always looking downfield too long. Franklin now has the personel to fit his O in his third year.

Many thanks for your great post..I would add Florida in the SEC as having a big question mark.Florida was great when Grier was QB but then lost their offense when he was suspended. They were very lucky to win 10 games in the regular season, and finished out the last games of the season (and their bowl game) looking really bad.This finish causes many to think Florida will not win more than 7 games this season.Will they come up with offense, given a new incoming QB, to match their good defense?
