Looks like I am alone here. I don't mind it so much. No way Cal routes Tennessee! I will gladly eat crow if this happens. Most people know that I am a Tennessee fan. I do bet against them when I see a reason to. I am speaking loudly and clearly here. WAY TO MANY POINTS. Best of luck to all.
Birdsword...you are not alone. I will be on the Vols and hopefully this line continues to climb.
Everyone in this thread seems to be ignoring Cal's weaknesses while focusing only on Tennessee's question marks...WR and DB's.
Most everyone in here agrees that Tennessee's ability to throw the ball is questionable due to the inexperience of their WR's. But the real question is will they need to throw the ball? Tennessee ran thru Cal for about 220 yards and 5.5 yards per carry last year...that was against what was considered one of the top DLs in the nation and maybe the best Cal had ever had.
What will they run for against this Dline that lost 3 of 4 starters and 2 of 3 starting LBs? If you're gashing someone for 6, 7, 8 yards per carry...you don't have to thow often...then the defense moves up to stop the run and boom...it's so wide open in the secondary even young inexperience receivers can find a spot to catch a pass...and with the speed they have...they'll be gone.
Defensively...the Vols may be young and inexperienced in the secondary but the LBs are top notch and the DLine while thin should be better than last year.
They have both Defensive Ends back and get DT Mapu in his 2nd year back from mission. Last year he was not in shape...and he was on the verge of being an All SEC DT when he left for mission 3 years ago.
The front 7 should be able to get good pressure on Longshore..they harrassed and sacked him 3 times last year. Would not be surprised to see the same this year.
I'll agree that the situational edges are with Cal, especially the revenge as I'm sure they've had this game circled. But being played at Cal is not that big a deal...Vols have played in much bigger venues and in front of much more hostile crowds and being the 1st game of the year...they will be ready
With these matchups, I'll take an SEC dog getting 6 or 7 against Cal.
Though depending on what the total is...the Over may be the best play in this game.

My Grandpa was a professor at WV, my Grandma worked in the chem department there... my dad's whole family went there and were raised in Morgantown. I came out of the womb rooting for WV, and I have live and died (mostly died, until recently) by WVU football and basketball ever since I can remember... I used to go back every Christmas but now it's less frequently, unfortunately - although I did catch the basketball team beating then #9 Uconn this last break.
My first sports memory is WVU scoring first on Florida in 1993 and then getting shellacked 49-7... one of the best moments of my life was Phil Brady faking the punt to seal the game against Georgia two years ago.
I'm going to be a senior at Cal, so obviously I am a die hard Cal fan as well - I've traveled to Knoxville, LA every year, Vegas, San Diego and I'm going to Arizona and maybe Oregon this year as well, but I just can't let go of the Mountaineers... the background on my computer is still Mike Gansey, and I still think Pat White should have won the Heisman last year.
People always bug me and ask who I would root for if the two teams ever played each other, and I can't give a straight answer.

I think the line is about right and I'm leaning towards Cal. There is a BIG advantage for Cal with their starting WR's (Hawkins, Jordan, and Jackson) who as a group are by far the best in the country going against three new starters in the secondary for Tennessee. You can also add 2nd team ALL Pac team TE in Stevens. I dont know how Tennessee is going to match up.

Go Mountaineers!

:) Mike Gansey annihilating Chris Paul in double overtime in the tournament 3 years ago and picking Jordan Farmar for the win are both up there too.
VivaLV - don't forget about Lareylle Cunningham too. He beat Wazzu singlehandedly 2 years ago and some of my buddies on the team think he's even better than Jordan or Hawk... he'll be a pro someday.
Craig is going to be a pro too, that guy is (literally) the strongest tight end in the country and can outlift almost anyone on the team. Nowadays you see all these tight ends that are either slimmed down linemen or beefed up receivers but he's a true tight end. He's an insane blocker that just loves to eat people up downfield and he's a great short yardage receiver. He doesn't quite have the hands that Garrett Cross did a few years ago, but I think he's a better all around player because he blocks so well.

You are an idiot if you think Lareylle Cunningham will be a pro.

Cal Kid, I don't believe I know you (since you're going to be a senior this year), but I used to work as a Football Student Manager for the Cal team for 3 years -- 1 year under Holmoe and the remaining 2 years under Tedford when he first came to Cal. My last year at Cal (in 2002's football season; I graduated in 2003) was when my boy, Kyle Boller (2nd string QB on the Ravens now) led us to finally take back the axe from Stanfurd in Berkeley. Man, that was exciting -- especially since I was watching the game from the sidelines. Needless to say, the crowd stormed the field, and one of the goal posts made it down to Telegraph. Are you currently working as a Student Manager as well? If not, what is your affiliation with the team? I go back every now and then to say "hi" to "Moose" (, haha) and "Dog", so maybe I'll run into you one day.

Oh yeah, great comments from everyone up above about the game. I don't believe this has been mentioned yet, but this is the first time ever that ESPN College Gameday is coming to Cal. The story can be found here: https://clog.dailycal.org/426/breaking-espn-college-gameday-is-coming-to-berkeley
Needless to say, this will be a HUGE game for Cal and one that Tedford (in his understanding about the media in relation to "politics" and the importance of the game) will do everything in his power to win. I personally know Tedford since I worked for the team for almost three years and I don't think he is the kind of coach/person who is keen on point spreads and will try to purposely cover for the fans/Cal backers (but who knows? I could very well be wrong about this). Having said that, I still strongly believe Cal covers the 5.5 points and wins by at least a TD. Especially with revenge on their minds from last year, this is pretty much a perfect situation for Cal, in my opinion.

I loved Cal in this matchup all summer. Then someone started a thread a few days ago about ML underdogs, and I said I might look into Tennessee at +170 as it was pretty high for a decent SEC squad, sort of going out on a limb. So I picked up my mags and started analyzing it, and loved Cal once again after about 5 minutes. I simply could not find any reason to bet Tennessee in this game.
That was exactly what happened to me

highside, I don't know how you missed this, but ESPN announced about a month ago that they were ditching us to go to Virginia Tech / ECU instead.
My buddy texted me when I was in a meeting and I flipped out and had to leave, and I also wrote a couple of "shame on you for trying to exploit the deaths of VT students and making ESPN Gameday about sensationalism and human interest stories instead of about FOOTBALL" to ESPN.
I have no direct affiliation with the team, but eight players are in the fraternity that I'm the president of, including two of my best friends. So they tell me all the random stuff that is off the record. Also, I go to a lot of the practices and stuff just because I love football. (Headed over there at four, actually).

You don't know what you're talking about. Cunningham will get a shot at the pros. Last year, Marcus O'Keith was our 3rd string running back who got absolutely no burn except in garbage time, and he just signed with the Chiefs.
Cunningham is behind three guys who will definitely be in the league (Well, DeSean and Hawk for sure, RJ I wouldn't bet on) and I can't tell you why he doesn't get more PT.
The guy is so ridiculously coordinated, has incredible hands and runs the best routes on the team. He's not explosively fast, but he's better than most WR's starting for any team in the country right now.

I can't remember WVU's QB name, but I remember Monty Grow relocating his chinstrap through his facemask on one of the hardest hits I've seen, and certainly the first I remember as one my first sports memories. I was trying to find a clip of it somewhere

its one thing to get signed to a pro team right now and still make the team. I'd be shocked if O'Keith makes it for the regular season. And Lavelle Hawkins won't make the pros. YOu see guys like him every year. Fast and small. He's been overhyped ever since he signed with LSU. I've been waiting for him to perform since he stepped on the Cal campus.
But I'll be on Cal vs Tenn as well. I see an ass whoopin. Tedford MUST win this game.

What fraternity are you President of, if you don't mind me asking? I was in Theta Delta Chi ("Chia") and still go by every couple weeks or so actually since I live pretty close by.

So I'm thinking about putting my bet in now for Cal -5.5. Do you guys think this is a good time to put it in or do you think more money will come in on Tennessee in a couple of weeks?

I believe Tenn starting RB will be out due to suspension. So I assume the line will be going up even more by game time maybe 6 or 7 points. I would not be surprised. I will wait and see what happen. Taking Tenn at +7pts worth a look here.

I have followed Tennessee football for many years, I still have many relatives and friends near Chattanooga. I do not support TN blindly, I bet the way I think the game will go. I do not believe that Fulmer can inspire his players for the non-conference games like he should. I don't like Ainge, he is too streaky, blows hot and cold. Usually if he has a few bad plays he is off for the rest of the game. TN went (favored, I think) to Washington a few years back and got their heads handed to them. These cross-country games seem to not be their best attempts. I will take Cal if I play this game. Good luck on your plays.
