WVU opens at +1??? Wow. You got cojones Vegas. Making WVU a dog here...

And it moves to WV +1.5 in the first hour?

So I guess Vegas will be on the side of West Virginia because all the Texas squares are going to pound this?


What sharp is pounding Texas?

I have never been more uncomfortable backing a team with a lead than Purdue first, and then Texas this year. Two most uncomfortable teams in recent memory. Allergic to any and all leads.

They can't hold leads. For god's sake this team has trouble kicking extra points.

BUT it's in Texas...What? People think Texas is going to win out? This is not an 8 win team. Severely flawed.

WV is an excellent team. Excellent. Very solid on both sides of the ball. Texas...Not so much. There are too many flaws to recount here.

I haven't capped this game but I expected WV -2.5 and even -3.

Texas -1.5 and rising....Cojones....Conjones Vegas. You got em for this line...We know this game will be close but all WV has to do is win outright? And even a +1.5 is worth something to other teams. See the previous Texas Tech.

If there are injuries I'm missing tell me please.

Like Utah State and Notre Dame last week, where are the people clamoring to take Longhorns here?

 I will agree that the # should have opened WV -3. I guess LV is respecting their 4-0 ats in Austin.
WV is a well balanced team on all 3 sides of the ball.
 It can be argued that WV DC Tony Gibson's D is the best overall D in the Big 12.
 The Big 12 Title is still wide open. 
WV has a shot at this.
 OK in Motown on Nov 19 and Baylor on Dec 3.
 The Mountaineers are a Live Dog here Scal in Austin, TX at Darrel K.
 We will wait to get all the + we can.

it is a coin flip game.   Though the Texas is still not good, Charlie Strong's influence on the D and in particular the secondary is making an impact.   Throw in that it is pretty much understood that he must win all four games to get a year four.   And yes, if Charlie goes 8-4, he will most certainly get a year 4.      The game is in Austin.   Texas has played very well recently in Austin versus on the road.     I disagree with your assessment, Vegas knows that this is a toss up.     No play for me.

I bet WVU 1h this past weekend. They started a little slow. But made the right plays in 2q and clobbered Kansas going into halftime.

Kansas started to turn it around 2h and got 3 TDs somehow. Believe KU covered the game spread (around 30) after being dominated early. Maybe that had an effect on the line? 

Texas is still a public play. Based on the square bets hitting this weekend, and then again in NFL, I see WVU winning straight up. BOL

Still can be a coin flip game and the line can be set at -2.5/-3 for the road dog (@Wahoo too).

8-4. I would be absolutely stunned if he got to that. He ain't getting there be it WVU now or TCU later.

He doesn't have Warren. If he had Warren I'd be singing a different tune. Porter is no Warren.

341 yards for Foreman. LOL. WVU will be on him like flies on shi*.

And even with 341 yards they still only won by 8.

This line should be -2.5/-3 WVU. That's my point.

not so fast.....WV D only gives up 20 ppg and under 400 ypg and a very balanced offensive attack at 290 pypg and 235 rypg...they love 7-minute TD drives.

agree here.  While I too believed this line would open WV -3, I wasnt surprised that

a) it opened Tex -1
b) got bet to WV -1 (at BOL)
c) got bet to Tex -1.5 when all books opened...CRIS to -2.5

it's based on Texas' defense playing better (still flawed but definitely improving...reducing avg opp ppg by 9 the past few weeks) and playing well at home with strong (pun intended) crowd support.  They have the top RB (or top 3 at least) in the nation. 

The players really like Charlie and they are well aware they have to step up and win out to keep him there.  I am pretty sure he's a goner based on everything we have heard but a 9-4 season is still possible if they win this game and it will be harder for TPTB to fire him based on that.

WV +3 feels like a must bet at this point but the books making Texas chalk over a ranked team says a lot.

It says a lot to me too. It says they want to tighten a bed sheet around their neck (unless they are drawing in Texas homers and ultimately will have WVU as their profitable side).

All this talk about players playing for Strong and crowd support. I love intangibles more than anyone but my god, this Texas team is so, so, flawed.

Your RB runs for 341 and you need to make a game winning INT with 9 seconds left?

You should win by 3 TD's with run offense that spectacular! Instead Texas like they always do, plays nip and tuck the entire way. Allergic to leads.

They aren't playing a sieve of a defense like Texas Tech this week. They're gonna feel that in the first quarter!

And this "playing for Strong" mantra. I love it. But it wears off.

I use the "playing for Rex" mantra in the NFL. Can't use that every week folks. It's not perpetual. It rises and falls like the tide.

Those are the words that come to mind when I think of that team.

Those are the words you like to hear when you want to cover a spread, particularly when you are laying points.

Do any of those words describe the Longhorns???

WVU alum here, been to every home game this year and watched all the road games.

It's safe to say this team had a letdown after their first loss to Oklahoma St. I was at the night game in Morgantown against Kansas and this team just showed up, albeit they knew they could against the Jayhawks.

Very interested to see how this team responds against Texas physically and emotionally, as they still had that tough loss against Oklahoma St on their minds this past Saturday. When they show up for a game mentally, they are one of the most hard hitting physical teams in recent mountaineers history. While WVU was never a playoff contender in my opinion, they have been one of the surprise teams nationally (Vegas set win total at 6.5) They have a good upperclassmen group that has good leadership and want to see how they show up for practice this week and prepare. Holgorsen said on the radio this past week that they were preparing well blah blah blah but I think they took it as a glorified bye week against Kansas. Away at Texas this week, and a home for a potential "ESPN College Gameday" on the table against Oklahoma on the schedule the following, this game should be considered a must win.

I'll post updates as I hear them throughout the week as I live in Morgantown, but injury wise our best rusher Rushel Shell got injured in the second quarter of the Oklahoma St game & missed Kansas game as a precautionary measure due to the opponent. WVU abandoned the run game against Oklahoma St early and threw their offensive game plan off.  Justin Crawford looks like his injury is behind him, leaving what should be a stable backfield  w Kennedy McCoy in Austin 

The trademark of this wvu team is their defense. When they are up for it, they're the best in the Big 12. The loss to Oklahoma St and points allowed were not congruent with defensive performance for anyone that watched the game, with the WVU offense giving the Cowboys turnovers deep in their own territory. 

Texas is 1-3 at 11am games and this is the second time this season WVU has been an underdog (previous time against Texas Tech in which they shut down Texas Tech offense). The Mountaineers relish in the underdog role but would like to see their mentality heading into the first couple days of practice before I make a decision on this game.

Based on all that, there is no chance you'll be playing the Longhorns. It's Texas or a no-play. I mean, in that entire write-up you didn't have a single positive thing to say about Texas.

So why do we fear them? This Charlie Strong mystique. The home game. Folks, Oklahoma was a must win, coming in on a two game losing streak, for Texas and that was a defacto home game. Loss. Gave up almost 50 points. Gave up almost 700 yards of offense. In a must win. And OK isn't all that good this year in comparison to prior years! WV simply isn't going to give up the scores and yards OK gave up. What D has Texas faced that's like this one? None.

And in hindsight, look how unimpressive that Notre Dame game looks now! And Texas fans were falling all over themselves like they just won the championship that night! The Almighty Irish!!! That team lost to DUKE at HOME. Lol!

Bottom line: WVU could easily have rolled up OSU without the 2 turnovers for 14 points. Do not let that final fool you...OSU was sitting on a powder keg for most of that game, and things broke against WVU. The running game is good and QB play is solid.Texas is not good. Not at all. WVU will score and get to the passer on D.

That being said, the last time I rode with Scal wasn't the greatest Saturday. Lost outright with Boise and got blown with Purdue. And will likely lose the RSW win bet with Purdue......so in retrospect, Texas may be the play here.

He went to a party last Saturday night and either:

A) Pulled his best Donald Trump impersonation by grabbing things and subsequently getting arrested and/or maced

Or

B) Stood in a corner with a lampshade on his head.

Whatever the case, all he remembers of the past 8 days is Boise State and Purdue.

And since that time we all:

1) Won with the kings over the T-Wolves
2) Won with the Knicks over Memphis
3) Won a POY with Memphis over SMU
4) Pushed with Miami over the Jets but if you got a better line than me (likely) you cashed.

And we've gone 3-1ATS on Purdue bets this year to make up for the RSW.

Does all that matter to Vern?

No.

Because he's like Anton Chigur from No Country for Old Men, stone-faced at his PC with a "Give me a winner every time or go to hell" mentality.

Or maybe he's not even reading this because the lamp shade is still on his head...Who knows?

I was shocked when I saw this line...  you better get WVU and the points while you can because it won't be there come game time.  

It wasn't a week ago WVU was a top ten team.  Texas goes on the road and beats a bad Tech team by a TD with a 340 yard rusher and all of the sudden they are world beaters?  My money is on WVU.  They have experience at the QB position and they are the only team in the Big 12 that plays any D.  

Until Texas shows me they can put consecutive games together of playing decent football, I will fade them.  I will go out on a limb and say that Foreman will not run for 341 against this WVU D.  That's why they call it gambling.

Scalabrine, absolutely look forward to your write ups every week and really appreciate your passion. and intelligence   RE: Utah State, my two cents, be careful.  Wyoming absolutely physically beat the living daylights out of them Saturday.  Every play somebody got drilled--they are the walking wounded.  New Mexico is a very good run team and has a tremendous incentive.  Thanks for you input every week

Which is why Strong took over the defense, and since then they have played much better.  6 pts to ISU (3 pts setup by an early turnover).  24 to KState.  30 to TTech in Lubbock (7 of those points came off a luckbox 99.999 yard fumble return as Texas was about to score).  Is it good?  No.  But it is better...improving.  That's what you ask of a very young team.

WV is a solid team.  Good defense, but they too can be had.  37 to OKSt, 32 to BYU.  Even gawd awful KU put up 21.

Texas still makes some mistakes.  And that 18-wheeler package went from completely awesome to friggin awful in a matter of weeks.  Hopefully Gilbert is learning to stop using it......


And since everyone knows no Big12 team is making the final 4, I think the other coaches are willing to lose a game and colluding to ensure Texas wins and Charlie is given a long term contract
