So why do we fear them? This Charlie Strong mystique. The home game. Folks, Oklahoma was a must win, coming in on a two game losing streak, for Texas and that was a defacto home game. Loss. Gave up almost 50 points. Gave up almost 700 yards of offense. In a must win. And OK isn't all that good this year in comparison to prior years! WV simply isn't going to give up the scores and yards OK gave up. What D has Texas faced that's like this one? None.
And in hindsight, look how unimpressive that Notre Dame game looks now! And Texas fans were falling all over themselves like they just won the championship that night! The Almighty Irish!!! That team lost to DUKE at HOME. Lol!
Thanks Scal, just wanted to offer some insight and follow up on some extra points before the game Saturday. First of all, I did want to clarify I've only gotten to watch 3 full Texas games this season so I can't give as good of insight on the Longhorns as others here. I will say this:
This game is going to be the biggest cat and mouse game since Tom & Jerry
Holgorsen is calling this "the toughest running game we've faced all year" and I don't disagree. BYU had a bruiser of a tailback that had success on the Mountaineers 3-3-5 defense, and Foreman looks to be in that same class and better. Combine that with a dose of Tyrone Swoopes and WVU finds themselves in unfamiliar territory defensively. If they have success early and force WVU to bring in their coverage to stop the run, there will be shots taken down the field and really test the secondary.
Hearing quotes throughout the week from Mountaineer players saying "we're not scared of them" and some calling this "the biggest game of the year" lets me know their focus is on this game and not next week with Oklahoma, and why shouldnt it be?
The Mountaineers have a viable path to the Big 12 Championship, with games against both the Sooners and the Baylor Bears in chilly Morgantown.
The Longhorns on the other hand? Bowl Eligibility, la di freakin da
Charlie Strong himself this week while excited about bowl eligibility stated hes hoping to build on momentum and also wants bowl eligibility for his seniors (Guys, they play Kansas next week and they know they'll become bowl eligibile)
On a more personal note, Senior QB Skyler Howard recalls sneaking into DKR at night time in as a kid, idolizing Vince Young and the Texas greats. You can bet he wants this victory in Texas after getting snubbed from his home team.
Were my Mountaineers overrated at #10 and have aspirations of playoff crashers? but the key word of aspiration is what might make the difference in this one. I'm still anxious to see the intensity and emotional state of this team as I don't take much away from the Kansas victory. But lets not also forget an impressive offensive stat that has led to a successful 2016 campaign:
WVU is one of only two football programs ranked in the top 30 nationally in passing (26th) and rushing (28th). The other is Louisville
The status of running back Rushel Shell has gone from game time decision, to a full participant in practice, thus leaving me to believe he will be a go. The cupboard is not empty if he is still limited.
I believe this is the biggest game of the year for the Mountaineers, and if they truly believe this as well, I see us coming away with a victory. If the running game of Texas is successful early, this game could be a toss up. Waiting on a preferential line and either making a play on WVU or nothing.
Best of luck to everyone on this weekends plays
