i've tested the returning starters numbers as have some others...
surprisingly, OL career starts don't matter. they may actually be a reverse indicator. and i'm talking ATS, not w/l record improvement.
what i and others found.... returning QB is important. hasn't always been +EV but never negative EV that i've seen (i'm counting entire season and collectively)... returning production (includes QB) and returning tackles are positive but not highly. returning TB is fairly positive.... back 4 (CB's and safeties) is very positive.............. a bit mixed, but returning punter is good too.
so basically returning QB and 3 of 4 returning secondary are very good.......
first year coaches used to be terrible and 3rd year excellent but not sure that's case any longer..... i might do a study on this.
and i forgot.............. total returning starters is mixed but generally positive. i think with this one you need to filter a bit. alabama or ohio state with few returning starters is fairly common (juniors/RS sophs jumping to NFL) but they can fill those holes very easily (QB excepted)

transfer (JC too???) QB were absolutely abysmal ATS last year with at least one very profile exception (auburn). not sure if that's the case in earlier years.
one thing about pure transfer qb's (as opposed to JC) is that 1) it didn't work out at their last stop - obviously many reasons but if it worked out well they'd still be there), 2) they haven't actually played in a long time in many cases; 3) expectations can be huge - wow, mediocre program gets former top 20 QB recruit

i checked out 1st year coaches last year...\
they were 115-119 ATS
good ones (38-14 ATS): fresno state, fau, texas, cal
bad ones (14-33 ATS): wk, cin, ole miss, ind..
anyone see any pattern?.......... higher profile, more exciting hires for the good ATS teams?

i was a missing a few 2017 new coach teams... doesn't make a huge difference to collective total..... but purdue was 9-4 ATS. so another good team
