Week 7 observations and Week 8 ponderings

Getting off to a late start this week, so without further ado....

Sun Belt

This is the only conference that still features divisions. UL Monroe is the surprise leader in the West, compiling a 3-0 conference record, 5-1 overall. They're also 4-0 ATS vs teams not named Texas, including three outright wins as a dog, and now enter their bye week, after going on a 21-0 fourth quarter run to race past Southern Miss, 38-21.

James Madison rebounded from their upset loss at ULM two weeks ago with a 39-7 rout of Coastal Carolina last Thursday. Alonza Barnett III threw for 199 yards and three TDs and the Dukes outgained the Chanticleers 421 yards to 183, outrushing them 222 yards (5.3 YPR) to 81 (3.1). CCU QB Ethan Vasco was only five of 18 for 84 yards and threw two interceptions, including a pick six.

Next up for the Dukes is a huge East Division showdown at Georgia Southern, which rallied from  23-3 down to stun Marshall, 24-23. Backup QB Dexter Williams II replaced injured starter JC French and, down 23-5 in the fourth quarter, completed 10 of his 14 passes for 136 yards and led three TD drives for the Eagles. The Thundering Herd outrushed the Eagles 200 yards (4.7 YPR) to 93 (2.8), despite the loss.

Louisiana took advantage of five Appalachian St. turnovers, converting three into TDs in a 34-24 win over the Mountaineers. 

Jordan McCloud completed 24 of 29 for 320 yards and four TDs to lead Texas St. to a 41-9 rout of Arkansas St. The Bobcats outscored the Red Wolves 24-0 in the second half.

QB Colton Joseph accounted for 239 yards of total offense to lead Old Dominion past Georgia St. 21-14. The Monarchs rushed for 202 yards (4.5 YPR) and held the Panthers to just 57 (2.0).

Looking ahead:

SOUTH ALABAMA -12' vs Troy - Jaguars return home Tuesday, after a three game road swing, looking to end a two game losing streak, AND avenge last year's 28-10 loss.  Line seems high, but I don't want anything to do with the Trojans.

MARSHALL  -9 vs Georgia St. - The Herd look to avenge 41-24 road loss a year ago in a Thursday night clash.

Louisiana -3' at COASTAL CAROLINA - Homecoming for the Chanticleers in a cross division matchup. The Ragin' Cajuns can't afford to look ahead to next week's clash at Texas St.

Texas St. -10 at OLD DOMINION - Another cross division game, another homecoming. The Bobcats look as if they've righted their ship since the Sam Houston debacle three weeks ago, but a huge West Division showdown with Louisiana looms.

James Madison -10 at GEORGIA SOUTHERN - Game of the day.  The winner takes control of the East Division. Lean to the Dukes at this number. Still trying to figure out how they managed to lose at ULM, but they look like the best team in the Sun Belt, hands down, and they're still in the running for the G5 playoff bid.

Arkansas St. -6' at SOUTHERN MISS - Second straight road game for the Red Wolves, and the line seems high, but there's nothing golden about the Golden Eagles.

C-USA

Quinton Cooley rushed for 174 yards and two TDs, and Christian Bodnar forced a game ending turnover in overtime as Liberty held off Florida International last Tuesday, 31-24, after the Golden Panthers had rallied from a two TD deficit. The Flames rushed for 281 yards on 50 carries, and have a bye coming up.

After an 0-3 start, Jacksonville St. cruised to their third straight blowout win Wednesday night, 54-13 over New Mexico St. The Gamecocks ran all over the Aggies for 334 yards at 6.8 YPR.

Caden Veltkamp threw for 264 yards and three TDs and Western Kentucky jumped out to a 27-7 halftime lead and held on to keep UTEP winless, 44-17. The Hilltoppers rushed for 233 yards (5.5 YPR). Ezell Jolly ran for 120 yards on 27 carries for the Miners.

Freshman QB Evan Bullock went 18 of 25 for 290 yards and five TDs to lead Louisiana Tech to a 48-21 rout over Middle Tennessee St. The Bulldogs gained 551 total yards and outrushed the Blue Raiders 222 yards (4.9 YPR) to 60 (2.9).

Looking ahead:

MIDDLE TENNESSEE ST. -10 vs Kennesaw St. - Yuck. Tuesday night snooze fest.

Louisiana Tech -11 at NEW MEXICO ST. - Not excited about laying double digits here, but the Aggies are horrible. Bulldogs should run for a few Tuesday night.

SAM HOUSTON -2' vs Western Kentucky - Bearkats enter this game on Wednesday off a bye, and since the end of last year are on an 8-2 SU, 8-1 ATS run. I would rather have them as a dog here, but I'm still leaning Sam Houston at this number to avenge last year's loss. Just a lean though, as the Hilltoppers are on a 4-1 SU, 4-0 ATS run since their opener at Alabama.

Florida International -7 at UTEP - FIU is off an overtime loss at Liberty, and hit the road again to El Paso to face the winless Miners Wednesday night. The Golden Panthers are seeking revenge for a home loss a year ago.

ACC/INDEPENDENTS

Gonna try this again after accidentally erasing my post not once but twice! Downsizing my thread.

VIRGINIA TECH -7 vs Boston College - Both teams are off a bye going into this Thursday night affair. The key will be whether or not BC can protect QB Thomas Castellanos, who was sacked three times and had three fourth quarter turnovers in a 24-14 loss at Virginia two weeks ago.  The Hokies lead the ACC in sacks with 20.

DUKE -3 vs Florida St. - Again, both teams are off a bye, and my initial reaction was to take the Blue Devils here, under the Friday night lights. But the last time Duke beat FSU was.....well..... never. They're 0-22 lifetime vs the Seminoles. But that's not an endorsement for Florida St. The 'Noles have yet to gain 300 total yards in any game this season and they're 0-6 in the stats. Still, perhaps redshirt frosh QB Brock Glenn can give them a spark. He threw for 228 yards and two TDs in the loss against Clemson. It would help though if he had a running game to back him up. The 'Noles have rushed for a grand total of 356 yards in six games at 2.2 YPR. 

CLEMSON -21 vs. Virginia - Since getting throttled by Georgia in their season opener, the Tigers have been taking no prisoners and have dominated all four ACC opponents they've faced. This one doesn't feel any different, and even though the line seems a tad high, it's Clemson or nobody in this one.

UCONN -1 vs Wake Forest - Could go either way.  Demon Deacons have played the tougher schedule.

Miami Fl -5 at LOUISVILLE - Hurricanes probably spent their bye counting their blessings after two extremely close calls vs. Virginia Tech and at California. The Cardinals are better than both of those teams, and are coming off a 24-20 win at Virginia, in a back and forth affair. Tyler Shough passed for 231 yards and threw a five yard TD pass to a wide open Jamari Johnson for the winning score with 1:55 left. RB Isaac Brown added 146 yards rushing and two TDs on 20 carries. Louisville's last three games have been decided by seven points or less, including a 31-24 loss at Notre Dame three weeks ago, a game in which they outgained the Irish by 127 yards. This game feels like it could go either way, and with the 'Canes 0-2 following a bye under Mario Cristobal I'm leaning Louisville here in their Homecoming game.

Notre Dame -11' at GEORGIA TECH - The Irish have lost two or three starting offensive lineman, a starting defensive tackle, a starting defensive end (their sack leader), their top corner and their top backup corner to injuries, and yet they still blew out Stanford last week, 49-7. At some point though it seems as if all these injuries will catch up to them. Maybe this week. The Yellowjackets are a live dog here, coming off a 41-34 win at North Carolina last week. QB Haynes King is completing over 71% of his passes with only one interception and has rushed for 343 yards (5.4 YPR), and RB Jamal Haynes has 536 (5.6). Lean to Georgia Tech.

CALIFORNIA -10 vs NC State - Homecoming game for the snakebit Golden Bears, off three straight losses by a combined eight points. The Wolfpack fell at home to Syracuse, 24-17, and are now 0-5-1 ATS, and are traveling to the left coast. 

Smu -14' at STANFORD - Mustangs have found their groove since losing at home to BYU with three straight impressive wins and are off a bye. The Cardinal are off three straight blowout losses and have QB issues. Leaning SMU here.

BIG Ten

Oregon -27' at PURDUE - The Ducks make their first cross country road trip as a Big Ten team on Friday, coming off a HUGE win over #2 Ohio St. in Eugene, and have to be wary of a letdown. The Boilermakers trailed at Illinois, 24-3, at the half but scored 40 second half points to tie the Illini and send it into overtime, before a failed two point conversion left them with a 50-49 loss. Redshirt freshman QB Ryan Browne made his first start for Purdue, and after throwing for just nine yards in the first half he wound up going 18 of 26 for 297 yards and three TDs, and rushed for 118 yards on 17 carries. Pretty sure that got Oregon's attention!

INDIANA -6' vs Nebraska - Both teams had a bye last week. The Hoosiers will attempt to remain undefeated on Homecoming, and have been impressive under Coach Curt Cignetti. The Cornhuskers have also improved under Matt Rhule, and are strong on both lines of scrimmage. This one comes down to Indiana's high powered attack (over 40 points a game scored in their last five) vs Nebraska's defense (allowed ten points or fewer in five of their six games). Should be a classic!

RUTGERS -4' vs Ucla - It don't get any more cross country than this; a 5000 mile round trip for the Bruins. It's Homecoming for the Scarlet Knights and both teams are coming off losses. UCLA lost a heartbreaker to Minnesota, 21-17, allowing the winning score with just 27 seconds left, despite outgaining the Gophers by nearly 100 yards. Rutgers was blown out at home by Wisconsin, and allowed 310 yards rushing (6.6 YPR). Nothing here excites me.

Wisconsin -7 at NORTHWESTERN - The Badgers have played their best football over the last two weeks, outscoring Purdue and Rutgers by a combined 94-13, averaging 269 yards rushing. QB Braedyn Locke seems to be improving by the week since taking over for injured Tyler Van Dyke. The Wildcats turned four Maryland turnovers into 20 points and routed the Terps 37-10, despite being outgained by 72 yards.

Michigan -3 at ILLINOIS - The Wolverines are off a bye and on their third QB, Jack Tuttle, who took over for Alex Orji at Washington and briefly had his team in the lead, but they had no answer for Huskies QB Will Rogers who went 21 of 31 for 271 yards and two TDs. That's significant because now they have to face Illini QB Luke Altmyer, who threw for 379 yards and three TDs in that overtime win over Purdue. For the season Altmyer has completed almost 68% of his passes for 1426 yards with 14 TDs and just one interception. The Michigan secondary will have their hands full. I like Illinois here.

Usc -7' at MARYLAND - 4500 mile round trip for the Trojans, who have already lost at Michigan and at Minnesota and now face the Terrapins on Homecoming. USC blew a 20-6 halftime lead to Penn St. and lost in overtime last weekend as Drew Allar lit up the Trojans secondary for 400 yards. The Terps aren't as bad as they looked last week against Northwestern.

Iowa -5' over MICHIGAN ST. - The Hawkeyes dominated Washington last weekend, 40-16, as Kaleb Johnson rushed for 166 of Iowa's 220 rushing yards and Cade McNamara threw two TD passes. The Spartans were off last week after two blowout losses to Ohio St. and Oregon.  This one is simple.  Iowa has 11 takeaways on the season, Michigan St. has committed 14 turnovers. Lean to Iowa to ruin Spartys homecoming.

Big 12

BYU -9' vs Oklahoma St. - Cougars remained undefeated, both SU and ATS, after a 41-19 "rout" of Arizona, but much like their 38-9 win over Kansas St. the final score doesn't begin to tell the story, as BYU scored 24 points off four Arizona turnovers. To put it in perspective, the Cougars have outscored their past three opponents 113-56, but but have been outgained by a cumulative 144 yards! That's just not sustainable. The Cowboys, off a bye, have a big rest advantage going into this Friday night matchup. Maybe THIS will be the week Ollie Gordon and company get it going, but I'm not betting on it.

CINCINNATI -6' vs Arizona St. - Seems like a big spread here. Sun Devils last five games have been decided by eight points or less, while three of the four games the Bearcats have played against FBS foes have been decided by six points or less. For that reason I'm inclined to take the dog in Cincy's Homecoming game, but the early noon start time (9 am Arizona time) gives me pause.

Kansas -5' vs Houston - "Homecoming" game for a Jayhawks team that doesn't really have a home right now, while their stadium is being rebuilt. "Home" this season is in Kansas City, about 30 miles from Lawrence. Doesn't seem to matter much WHERE they play this year as they're 0-5 SU and ATS vs. FBS teams, and have been outscored in the fourth quarter in every game by a cumulative 63-27. As for Houston, forget about those first five games and their 1-4 start, including back to back shutout losses. The Cougars may have found their QB. Zeon Chriss was outstanding in his first start a couple weeks ago in a 30-19 win at TCU, completing 15 of 18 for 141 yards and a TD, while rushing for 97 yards and another score on 11 carries. The Cougars controlled the clock with 207 yards rushing (4.7 YPR) and held the Horned Frogs to 66 (3.0). As far as this game, I know it's a one game sample size, but I've got a feeling Houston is the play here. Both teams are off a bye.

TEXAS TECH -6' vs Baylor - Both teams off a bye. Bears have been competitive in Big 12 play, in spite of their 0-3 start. Red Raiders have the conference's top offense, with three conference wins by a single score, but they're 0-3 ITS. Not a totals player, but this has the earmarks of a high scoring game.

ARIZONA -3 vs Colorado - Sounds like the Buffs are gonna have two way star Travis Hunter back for this one, after he was one of four Colorado receivers injured last week in a 31-28 loss to Kansas St. Having Hunter back could be especially important on defense as he's expected to cover Arizona's standout WR Tetairoca McMillan. Since losing at Nebraska over a month ago, Colorado seems to be improving by the week. I already mentioned how 'Zona's lopsided loss at BYU was a little phony, but it should be noted that QB Noah Fafita has thrown seven picks against four Big 12 opponents. Not exactly a recipe for success.

Kansas St -3 at WEST VIRGINIA - At home the Wildcats have been a juggernaut this season. On the road, not so much. Although they've won two of three away from Manhattan, they're 0-2-1 ATS, and you could make the argument they'd be 0-3 had Colorado star Travis Hunter been able to play the second half last week. Now they go from Boulder to Morgantown to face the Mountaineers on Homecoming. Knee jerk reaction is to take the points here, but WVU is 0-3 SU and ATS vs. the three best teams they've faced, Penn St., Pittsburgh and Iowa St. 

IOWA ST. -13' vs Ucf - Cyclones are are 6-0 SU and 5-0 ATS and have the top scoring defense in the conference, allowing 11 points a game. Meanwhile, the Knights have dropped three straight after a 3-0 start, and are spiraling downward. This is a big number, but it's Cyclones or nobody.

UTAH -4' vs TCU - Horned Frogs can't run, can't stop it. Utes MAY be able to take advantage but with Cam Rising out for the year I have no interest in backing Utah.

MWC/PAC 2 

Fresno St. -3 at NEVADA - The Bulldogs have given up 550 yards rushing (5.6 YPR) in their last three games. The Wolfpack have rushed for 558 (7.3) in their last two! Plus, they're 4-1 ATS as a dog. Sometimes it's just that easy. Love the job Jeff Choate is doing with this team. Nevada is the play under the Friday night lights.

WASHINGTON ST. -19 vs Hawaii - Rainbow Warriors gave Boise all they could handle last week for three quarters, before the Broncos pulled away in the fourth. Since winning the Apple Cup, Wazzu has had their hands full with the MWC teams they've faced, needing a 60 yard pick six to put Fresno St. away last week. Gun to my head, I'd play the dog here.

New Mexico -2 at UTAH ST - Should be points aplenty in this one. Lobos have won their past two games by scores of 50-40 (NMSU) and 52-37 (Air Force), while the Aggies have lost their last two by scores of 62-30 (Boise) and 50-34 (UNLV). Both teams can score, and neither team can stop anybody. Could go either way.

SAN JOSE ST. -11 vs Wyoming - Cowboys beat the worst Air Force team I think I've ever seen for their only win of the season, and they haven't been competitive in the only two road games they played. The Spartans looks like they may have a QB controversy. Emmett Brown is the starter, but Walker Eget has started the second half of the last two games. 

Colorado St. -7 at AIR FORCE - Rams have lost the last seven in this series, but that streak SHOULD end here. Not because CSU is that good, but because the Flyboys are that bad (0-5 SU and ATS vs FBS teams)

Unlv -7 at OREGON ST - The Rebels are one overtime loss from being unbeaten. And they haven't lost anything since QB Matthew Sluka abandoned ship. Hajj-Malik Williams has completed 77% of his passes for 642 yards with nine TDs and just one pick in the three games he's started and the team has rushed for 691 yards (6.2 YPR) during that same stretch. Since losing their Civil War game to Oregon, the Beavers have averaged 38 points a game, rushing for 866 yards (5.9 YPR). The key for the Beavs is QB Gevani McCoy taking care of the football. He threw four interceptions last week in a loss at Nevada. I like Oregon St. here. Reser Stadium is a tough place to play and they're 17-3 SU there the last three plus years.

I would be shocked if a 3 loss team made the playoff…. Sure enjoy your write ups sir…. I feel it’s do or die for Bama and Georgia the rest of the year.    Playing both this weekend.

Just read that ASU QB Sam Leavitt is out this week at Cincinnati, but the line has dropped to -5 (?). Might have to take another look at that game.

ARMY -16 vs East Carolina - Pirates are off a bye after walking the plank at Charlotte two weeks ago. They gave up 307 yards rushing (6.0 YPR) in a 55-24 loss to the 49ers. Fact is they haven't stopped the run in their last three games, and now they face the unbeaten Black Knights (5-0 ATS), who are blowing through defenses like a locomotive through a Volkswagen. Defensively, they're holding opponents to about ten points a game! I'm not stepping in front of the locomotive.Big lean to Army.

TEMPLE -3 vs Tulsa - I'm not sure the Owls should be favored here, but they've beat me twice this year. Ain't gonna happen a third time. Pass.

NAVY 17 vs Charlotte - Both teams are off a bye. Homecoming for the unbeaten Midshipmen (4-0 ATS), led by QB Blake Horvath who is almost as dangerous passing (39 of 59 for 771 yards with seven TDs and just one interception) as he is running (565 yards, 8.7 YPR, ten TDs). The 49ers are off their best game of the season by far. Not sure they can duplicate that effort here, but the Middies HAVE given up some yardage this year. But I'm not going to step in front of the OTHER locomotive.

USF -13' vs Uab - Homecoming game for the Bulls, who haven't been competitive in their last three games and MAY be favored by too many here, except the Blazers haven't been competitive lately either.

TULANE -22' vs Rice - Seems like a lot of points here,  but since dropping two in a row to K St. and Oklahoma, the Green Wave have rolled to three straight lopsided wins, and the Owls don't seem to offer a lot of resistance.

UTSA -6' vs Florida Atlantic - The Owls don't exactly inspire confidence here, but the Roadrunners have been roadkill this year, going 2-4 SU and 0-5 ATS, and have been one of the most disappointing teams in the country.

MEMPHIS -12 vs North Texas - The Mean Green is 5-1 SU, but they're doing it with a defense that's allowing 469 yards a game vs FBS teams, and that includes allowing just 244 to a bad Wyoming team. Defensively, the Tigers have played just one bad game all season, at unbeaten Navy. In their other five games they've allowed about ten points a game, but other than Navy they haven't played anybody that's any good. The green guys are looking to avenge last season's 45-42 loss. Don't know if they can win outright, but this is a big number. Lean to North Texas.

SEC

MISSOURI -4 vs Auburn - Homecoming for Mizzou, who rebounded from their 41-10 debacle at Texas A&M with a 45-3 thrashing at UMass. Not sure what you can take from that game since they're 0-3 ATS against the only three teams they've played with a pulse. Auburn's off a bye, and looking to break a four game conference losing streak, but do you really wanna back a team that's a FBS worst -11 in turnover differential? I don't.

OKLAHOMA -1' vs South Carolina - First ever meeting between these two. Both teams feature solid stop units that can take the ball away, and both offenses are prone to giving it away. You can pretty much count on some turnovers in this one. It's worth noting though that although the Sooners are 53-6 in Norman from 2015 through this season, three of those losses have been under Brent Venables.

Alabama -3 at TENNESSEE - One thing I've figured out is that I don't have ANYTHING figured out concerning these two teams. Both teams have underachieved mightily the last two weeks. 'Bama seems to have forgotten how to play defense and and the Vols are struggling on offense. Flip a coin on this one.

Texas A&M -17 at MISSISSIPPI ST. - Aggies are off a bye following their best effort of the season, a 41-10 rout of Missouri. Conner Weigman was outstanding completing 18 of 22 passes for 276 yards in his return from an injury that kept him out for three games. A&M outgained Mizzou 512 yards to 254, but now must avoid looking ahead with LSU on deck. The Bulldogs put up 31 points at Georgia last week, but they've allowed an average of over 40 points in their last four games.

Lsu -1' at ARKANSAS - Bayou Bengals are off a HUGE 29-26 overtime win over Ole Miss for their fifth win in a row since losing the opener to USC. Razorbacks had a bye, one week after shocking Tennessee, 19-14, as a 14 point underhog, er, I mean underdog. But QB Taylen Green left that game with a knee injury and his status is in doubt for this one. Even if he's able to go, his running ability could be severely limited. Too much uncertainty for me here.

VANDERBILT -26' vs Ball St. - After two huge back to back wins over Alabama and Kentucky as double digit dogs, and with Texas on deck, this game is a hard pass for me. Last time Vandy was favored they lost outright to Georgia St.

TEXAS -4' vs Georgia - Bulldogs' rout of Clemson seems sooooo long ago. Since then they nearly lost at Kentucky, dug themselves a huge first half hole in Tuscaloosa before rallying and then losing to Alabama, underwhelmed at home against Auburn and couldn't shake off Mississippi St. last week. In that game MSU QB Michael Van Buren torched UGA's secondary for 306 passing yards and three TDs. That's a bad omen going to Austin and facing the Longhorns' high powered offense. On the other hand, this is BY FAR the 'Horns biggest test of the season. That defense, good as it's been, hasn't faced anything like they're gonna see Saturday night. I'm kinda leaning Georgia here.

Kentucky -1' at FLORIDA - Both teams are off disappointing losses a week ago, but for the Gators it was a double whammy as QB Graham Mertz was lost for the year with a knee injury, sustained on a 13 yard scoring pass for a 10-0 lead in the third quarter at Tennessee. Freshman DJ Lagway gets the start against a tough Kentucky defense, not an ideal situation.

EASTERN MICHIGAN -3' over Central Michigan - pass

BOWLING GREEN -20' vs Kent St. - nope

Western Michigan -1 at BUFFALO - uh-uh

MIAMI-OH -3' vs Ohio - next

NORTHERN ILLINOIS -3 vs Toledo - Maybe the Rockets bounce back after pooping the bed at Buffalo, buuuuuuut no.

Summarizing my potential playlist. Wound up taking Sam Houston Wednesday night when the line dropped to -1'. Tough break when Hunter Watson went down and didn't play the second half. 

NEVADA +3 over Fresno St. - Wolfpack should run all over these guys, and I really like the job HC Jeff Choate is doing.

ARMY -16 over East Carolina - Black Knights are doing it with both offense and defense, AND they've only committed ONE turnover all year, while the Pirates have given it up 15 times!

ILLINOIS +4 (up from +3) over Michigan - HUGE advantage at QB with Luke Altmyer, who has completed 68% of his passes for 1426 yards, 14 TDs and just ONE interception. Wolverine secondary can be had. 

North Texas +11' (down from +12) over MEMPHIS - Tigers lost to the only good team they've played (Navy), and the Mean Green aren't bad.

Georgia +5 (up from +4') over TEXAS - I doubt if I play this one, but this is by far the Longhorns' biggest test of the season, and I expect the Bulldogs to fight like they're the third monkey on the ramp to Noah's ark. Should be a great game to watch.

Iowa -5' over MICHIGAN ST - Sparty is off a bye, but has committed 14 turnovers so far, while the Hawkeyes have 11 takeaways.

OREGON ST. +6' (down from +7) over Unlv - Beavs are 17-3 at home over the past three plus years, and since the Civil War game, are putting up 38 points a game. This is a big number for the Rebels to cover with Boise on deck.
