Right now I see everyone and their Grandmother is on the Bears weeks 1 in this revenge Matchup
 
Is anyone here backing the Terps ????
 
Also if you are planning on  betting CAL .
What is the MAX points you would lay ????

Eat chalk with Kevin Riley at your own peril. I'm staying away from this game.

In fact, there are three Week One games for which there seems to be a consensus that they'll be "easy" covers for the favorites.

UCBerkeley (-17 to -14) over Maryland
Ole Miss (-17 to -14) over Memphis
Illinois (-5.5 current line) over Mizzou

I envision alot of hair pulling and holes in drywall by those who won't believe they gave points with Kevin Riley, Houston Nutt, and Ron Zook/Juice Williams.

Most likely, I'm staying away from all three (been burned enough by Juice Williams/Ron Zook to ever take them as faves again).

neither Maryland nor Memphis will be getting 20+ points... and neither Maryland nor Memphis will cover the 17 or 18 points they are getting...

At this rate, I would bet some people on here that Rush will def be on MD. I think thats the best bet week 1

TERPS allways win games they shoul lose and lose the ones they should win. Dont sleep on the Terps if giving the right points

All 3 of those games make me nervous....
 
The only big points that I will probably lay for sure is OU..... BYU is going to get an up close lesson on SPEED.....  not to mention huge difference in talent... and depth... and coaching...
 
In fact there should be a prop bet... How many times will they play "Boomer Sooner" ? I would say over 14 ????
 
BYU kids will have that sound in their heads for the entire season after hearing it every 5 minutes or so....

If the Line was 14 Last year
 
Take Away  the 3 + they gave the Terps for Home Field LY
 
ADD 3+ Points to the Bears for HF...
 
IMO the line might be 20-21....
 
I believe the oddsmakers will do everything they can to get near equal action on this game

Double- It sounds like 17-20 is what they are going to have to do.
 
 
I haven't seen more than 3 people who are scared of laying 17pts in this game. At worst, some would just not bet the game at 17.

Cal was coming off a 66-3 road win at WSU, and a cover at home vs Mich St.  Maryland had beaten Delaware 14-7 and lost at MTSU, so those games together might have inflated the line 3 or 4 points.  Personally, I think the line will be 20.5.

You folks have to stop trying to play oddsmaker and find your own number.  Then compare it to the number that you get.  That is the proper way of wagering.  Everything else, including trying to out guess people that you have absolutely no control or say over, is a waste of time that you could be putting in trying to get your own numbers in order.  I probably know more about the making of a line than anyone in here, and I do not waste my time trying to second guess the boys at LVSC.  My computer program uses a lot of the same formulas that theirs do.  That is because they came from the same people many years ago, when the LVSC first took over the odds making in Vegas from the individual Casino's.
 
Get your number on EVERY game, EVERY week.  This is how you find sleepers tha no one else even considers.  The books lose money on the sleeper games, not the headline games.  Remember, you can wager just as much money on Idaho-New Mexico State as you can on Cal-Maryland, or 'Bama-Va. Tech.  It doesn't matter which team you wager on.  All that matters is if you win or not.  And no, I probably will not hae a play on that game,  but I may have plays on games like Florida Atlantic-Nebraska, San Diego State-UCLA, and other seemingly meaningless games.

There is NO play on maryland in this game.......PERIOD
     * and "revenge" has nothing to do with it
terps in major rebuilding mode ....especially OL and DL......+ 60 of 85 scholarship players are underclassmen
* OL .....only 27  CAREER  starts return
* 2/5 Def front 7 returns.......BUT losses include 2  4 yr starters on DL.....+ 2 LB's that made 380 tackles the last 2 years < damn......+ best cover corner....PLUS......they have a new DC this year and will be learning a new system   (Don Brown from UMass)

how does cal do in 1st home game ?.......5-1 ATS......with average COVER by 14  points......
terps 1st road game ?.......3-5 ATS.......with missing the cover by an average of 7 points

interesting  >     Fridge is 25-17 ......VS  revenge.......(he remembers how he kicked your ass).......Tedford 20-11  with revenge.......(he remembers how you kicked his ass)........cal 7-0 ATS at home LY
       * get this one early......if you watch it climb over 21 > THEN bet....stop gambling.......or limit wagers to $5 or so

Atl,I can't wait for this game.  I agree, Okl takes care of biz here by 30+ pts.  I believe the line will be between 21-24 pts....I will be going large here.

...some people like to wait until teams find their identity, i dont, but it sounds like a smart way to approach a season if yoour scared of getting burnt early...i know a guy who always tell me " QB dont bet on the NFL early, wait til' week cuz anything can happen..."

Right, but that's not because a sharp player can't beat the lines on headline games; it's because the headline games expand the pool of players much further into the realm of the uninformed.  The books devote fewer resources to the low-profile games because the action is lower, and the potential losses are therefore less.  That means that, on average, the lines are a bit softer. 
 
But you yourself, Bigdaddy, have explained to us that we are not playing against the books but against one another.  Your advice that the low-profile games offer better opportunities for bettors would seem to contradict that advice; however, that advice does work to explain how there remain money-making opportunities in the "headline" games. 
 
In those games, the bettors include not only the well-informed and moderately-informed but also the poorly informed and wholly uninformed.
