BTW - the goal linked above (argentina's 3rd) - is Messi at his best.  He delivers an inch perfect pass from about 40 yards. 

I feel sad for him because this is where he (positionally) can succeed.  He should have been in these positions all tournament, instead of trying to be a striker.

I didn't think Giroud had a yellow card yet in the tournament. Why does he miss the next match?

Yeah, it was a strange match.  But I think if you play that match 10 times, France wins 7 or 8 of them.

51.  Spain / Russia - Spain has let in 5 goals in their group play, against Iran, Morocco, and Portugal.  But if you look at those 5, they are somewhat fluky:
1 Penalty
1 Free kick
1 Goalkeeper error
1 Defensive lapse that gave a 1-1 from midfield
1 Corner kick

So while I am not making excuses, they have allowed 5 goals and certainly this is not the way Spain will win anything - they have only allowed 3 shots on target from 3 games in the normal run of play - which is pretty incredible.

Spain can be frustrating as hell to watch.  Most of the time they are sitting on top of the opposition box passing the ball around seemingly uncaring on whether they put the ball in the net or not.  But this possession passing style usually comes better as the tournament goes on - as passing gets sharper and players get used to the runs of their teammates.  

Russia is a great matchup for Spain.  Russia is not going to "park the bus", I don't even think they could if they wanted to.  Their only hope is to outscore Spain - so Spain should actually have space and be able to counterattack - something they could not do against Morocco and Iran.  

I anticipate a snowball effect in this one - Spain takes the lead in to the half - and Russia is forced to press in the second in front of their fans - and Spain just punishes them.

Class, tactics, team - all favor Spain here.  Square play special - but I don't care....

Spain -.5 and 1 vs Russia -125 (5 units to win 4) - predicted final score Spain 3-1

Love the pick Van, also lets not forget that the free kick they allowed to Ronaldo was a 1 in 50 type amazing shot, they easily could be sitting on only 2 goals allowed all tourny if that even.  Go La Roja!!an_cheers

52.  Croatia vs Denmark

Croatia have certainly been one of the class teams of the tournament so far.  There has been little to point at in their play to criticize.

But Denmark provides a different challenge than any of their three group games did - a solid defensive minded team that is organized and talented (maybe Iceland, but they didnt play that way).  Denmark have only allowed 1 goal against their group - a penalty against Australia - but shut out France in the only 0-0 of the tournament, and Peru.  They look to defend first, and break on the counterattack.  Poulson will be back after suspension for the Danes - and will provide some speed on the counter.

I can see this game being what I thought Uruguay vs Portugal would be today - just a very frustrating choppy encounter that ends in normal time in a low scoring draw.  I see a lot of midfield possession for Croatia, but not much in the way of breaking down Denmark.  

Denmark +.5 vs Croatia +105 (1 unit to win 1.05)
Denmark to advance vs Croatia +210 (.25 to win .525)
Predicted final score 0-0 after normal time, and then whatever in ET and or PKs

I would gladly make that Uruguay/Portugal draw bet again. Good call even if a L. That miss with goalie on his belly out of net was pretty big.

Would like clarification on your Spain bet ( and on your France bet as well) You seem to have some sort of a parlay there on each ?? I followed you with stoppage time bets on France pk @ +142 and -1/2 @ +138 , but it appears you were able to combine those into one bet ?? Now you have done something similar on Spain v Russia. Help, please.

Van my book(Heritage) has Spain pickem/ -.5 at -129 and spain -.5 at +125...

Did you mistype your bet and mean pickem/-.5 or am I getting a steal?  Very weird....
