What do you do if you can't pay your bookie?

The truth of the matter is he doesn't really have a choice but to take half..a very small percentage of books are going to do anything to you physically if you dont pay them, running a book is against the law and if they mess with you they know they can get in a lot of trouble...nothing against bet the hook, but if a book asked me to sell my car to pay him id tell him to lick my nuts! you let him know that he will get paid and you make an effort to pay him.

its been years since i closed up shop, but there were plenty of times i had clients that couldnt pay.  you better believe i gave them all kinds of suggestions to settle up with me.  ive had dozens of guys get title loans on their vehicles to settle up.  id tell them to go into their 401 k's, id run their credit and find out if they were candidates for personal loans, find out who in their family they could borrow the money from..all kinds of things.  the bottome line is that you can probably come up with the money to settle up if you really want to.  i would have guys call me on tuesday telling me that they are short and by friday, they would suddenly have what they need.  utilize your resources and youd be amazed what you can come up with. 

if a client told me to lick their nuts after suggesting that take a certain course of action to settle up, then i wouldnt think twice about taking a little action.  im not talking physical violence, because there are other, much more effective ways that can persuade someone to take care of their business.  bottom line is when you win, you expect to get paid, so put yourself in your bookie's shoes.  it is all about respect. 

I've been around the block a few times and seen all kind of situations, never have i seen anyone physically harmed because they couldn't pay their book, i've seen some harassment and some phone calls but nothing serious..a good friend of mine was a book for years, he got stiffed a bunch of times, it's part of the game. If i owed money that i couldn't pay i sure as hell would never sell my car, i would go to my guy and explain the situation and give him what i had and set up some kind of payment plan.

You mention there are other effective ways to get money from someone other than physical violence, when you go that route you have to be prepared for that person to come right back at you..if my car or house was defaced then i would know who did it and then i have to do what i have to do..bookies have homes and families that they want protected also..i think most of them will take a loss before they decide to really get down to battle, i think it's easy for people to say what they would do if someone stiffed them but much harder to actually do it, most people have too much to lose.

like i said, i would never use violence or any threat of violence.  and yes, anyone in the game knows that bad bets are a part of it.  but going into it with the mindset that i can just tell my bookie i cant pay if i lose and ill be allright?  if everyone thought that way, then how many bookies would be in business?  its the people that pay up that keep books going.  my point is that you can come up with the money if you want to.  i dont care if it means selling your car as a last resort.  you should have never put yourself in the situation to begin with.  if you made the bet knowing that you couldnt pay if you lost, then you are completely disrespecting the man that is going to pay you if you win.  you have no business even making the bet to begin with.  the first two years i was taking action, i had numerous weeks where my players hammered me.  i never gave them excuses why i couldnt pay.  i did what i had to do and they got their money.  it works the same way on the other end.  so lets say you owe me money and you tell me you cant pay.  i see you a week later driving a  $30,000 car.  you bet your ass im gonna suggest you sell it, pay me, and go buy a $10,000 car to get around in. 

Im sure there are guys out there who would be willing to cause huge problems but i've never seen one. I think if you go to your man and give them something and then agree to settle up the rest you are going to avoid any big problems.

I dont believe that shit works, i think the book has too much to risk if he wants to play that game..as i said before, go to your book, give him what you have and come up with a plan to pay the rest..thats the best way to handle it if there is no other way.
