A vig on an office football pool?

I'm not sure what to think anymore. First, it was a home poker game that was being raked, now a football pool?

I found out this guy I know from poker runs a football pool between him and his fiancés jobs and people they know. It was 45 people and honestly its chump change $5 to get in. I won. Finally was able to collect on Wednesday and he had me pull up in his driveway while he came outside. It was going to be an in and out kind of deal. He hands me a stack of money and says that $20 has been removed "for the house." That they take usually 10% for "doing the sheets."

In that moment I was in utter shock. I couldn't come up with words and accepted it. Had already bought in for the next week in case I missed the guy.

Ive run an office pool at work before and we alternated every year and the organizer would get to free roll, but Ive never heard of a vig on an office pool and was not made aware of it before hand.

Is that shady?

Every forum has it's trolls. And for the record, yeah I do have wifey issues, there's a thread out there, you can read why over on that one. Well never be able to combat the trolls except with wit or better yet, just ignoring them. Does Covers offer an ignore/block button?

I was actually ignorant to the custom of tipping the pool organizer. But I was however, without any knowledge of the customs, offer to pay for his entry for the next week. That's just how I'm wired. I worked in restaurants/bars for a decade of my life. I know the drill.

Anyway, I think we can all agree that we should be made aware beforehand. 

Most of the pools were run by bars/clubs and it was standard practice to buy a round when you picked up your winnings and that was a payback to degenerates and a tip to the bar/club.

I believe in get-along go-along but biz does know some real ducks.

Some people that handle the pools do it for free while others charge.  Just cuz someone gives you a reasonable answer or answer you prefer on here doesn't mean that is a rule written in stone for every pool.  You can still be the jerk if you dont' agree while everyone else does in which case you can make the decision if you want to be involved or not.
