Checked in on a senior citizen this morning who lost her husband recently. He was a Korean War vet who I would take fishing ever couple of months with 2 of his buddies. She was all upset because she couldn't go to mass on Sunday and she ran out of holy water. I told her I would take care of it. So I called the church rectory & asked the nun who answered to ask the Monsignor to bless some water & I would come by to pick it up. I went to the rectory and found a 3 oz bottle of water on the counter & under the bottle was a donation envelope. I was like WTF? Does this priest expect me to make a donation because he's giving a parishioner 3 ounces of holy water? I returned home, left the water bottle in the neighbor's mail box & called to let her know where to find it. I did a good deed but I am so pissed at the way the church handled it. The Catholic Church is one of the richest establishments in the world but they still try to bleed their parishioners dry during an national emergency. We live in a strange farking world.
Off the cuff, I don't think the priest was out of bounds by leaving you an option to contribute to the parish. He did as you asked without payment. Just an option to contribute if you choose.
Have you ever gone to a cool oceanside bar/restaurant with live entertainment? You pay good money for the food and drinks and even though you know the musician(s) are getting paid, they always have a tipping station at the stage. You can give more or give nothing. Your choice.
