Walmart did pay minimum wage until they were pressured into a meager increase. They are still below livable wages.

The idea is to not stay at entry level or minimum wage jobs to start with. 

This is before they raised the wages:

Currently, only about 6,000 Walmart employees out of more than 1.2 million nationwide are paid at the $7.25 an hour federal minimum wage, according to the company. It employs more U.S. workers than any other business.

Walmart’s low-wage workers cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $6.2 billion in public assistance last year.

Why should the American tax payer pay when the Walton's are making over $90 million a day?

Walmart had nothing to do with that.   They don't force people to go on assistance. There are a lot, lot of employees of Walmart. So more of them may be on welfare than smaller companies. But the overwhelming majority are not on assistance.   
There are way more people on assistance that do NOT work at Walmart.  
Quit saying the same thing over and over as if it will make more sense. 
Bottom line. If you can't get by on what Walmart pays--move up.

Exactly ..move up or move on.....

Maybe those people complaining about their wages at Wal-Mart  need to give themselves some "Self-talk ....and start repeating “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me!”

That's not happening. Have you guys actually seen some of the employees at your local WalMart?


I've got a buddy who works for Nabisco, so he's got quite a few WalMarts in his sales route. His famous quote is:

"It's always easy to find the store manager at WalMart. He's the only one that still has all of his teeth......"

Why should taxpayers pay over 6 billion in assistance to walmart employees when the Walton's are making. $91 million per day?

Correct.  Now you are getting it!!  Don't stay in minimal jobs. Let others take them as you advance. Then they can use it as a stepping stone as well.

Yes. They have an excellent business model that provides a lot of folks with necessities at a reasonable price. 
If the Waltons were one person they would be way richer than Gates. 
Amazing how many people shop at Walmart.

I dont see any mention of why people suffer working at Walmart, what is the reason?

The reason in the past and maybe still now is that Walmart offers a pittance of benefits for full time employees.

So to the statement above about food stamp assistance, it holds a solid ammt of truth to it. In fact didnt Walmart get caught having some blurb in their employee video series telling employees to go get another job or look for government assistance if they werent making ends meet while working there?

Walmart is not the kind of corporation we want to use as an example of helping society...they pay lousy wages, its a bad working environment, they sell cheap crap and are making large exec profits. How is this a model of anything positive?

And Walmart is not the low cost leader of most things anymore. It used to be 30 yrs ago that Walmart was a better employer, their stores were better kept and I think that all went into the toilet once their founder was no longer active in day to day operations.

I hate going in Walmarts..they are depressing and the meager savings isnt worth the awful experience to me.

What is your point?  You don't have one close by?  Or prefer to simply pay more?  Unless you have no debt at all and are completely set for retirement and have no need to save money you should be using places that sell goods at a better price. Doesn't have to be Walmart, but something similar is fine.

What awful experience?  They have self checkout now. 
Folks are acting like Walmart is going to pay the same as Ford or Exxon---they aren't.  This is not a highly skilled job. Even if you move into management. 
Way more people are on assistance that do not work at Walmart. Not rocket science here. 
It is amazing to me because it seems like arrogance and jealousy.  Ridiculous.  Walmart never claimed they were Sax Fith Avenue or such.  They are what they are.  And a great many average and below income folks use them. Otherwise they wouldn't have profits.  Of course execs make money---they do for any company.  So, why wouldn't the largest employer in the world pay their ceo and execs great money?  They are responsible for the largest workforce and beating back competition.  
It is a volume thing---so they are not all neat and clean like a store that has maybe 20 customers a day. 
Weird to me that people want to hate on big companies as if they are all out to swindle folks any more than your local mom and pop or pawn shop does.

What is funny?  I am not defending them as much as thinking it is funny that you are attacking them and implying because you work there you have to have assistance.  If prices doubled at Walmart people would stop shopping there and folks would be out of a job.  Why would that be good?  They are no more greedy than any other company.

I mean, The President of the United States makes only 400,000 a year and runs the whole country. Is busier I'm sure.

In any metro area Walmarts are always close by, so distance isnt an issue for most people. 

My bad experience is pretty much every time I go in one. The employees always look uninterested and miserable, the stores are always in disarray and very dirty. Their prices are not the lowest, in fact many times they are higher than regular prices at more expensive grocery stores. At least in a full service Kroger the store is clean, employees will smile and be pleasant, not look at the floor and avoid you. 

Sam's Club is a completely different experience than Walmart and they are owned by the same group, so why is Sam's Club more organized, cleaner and a better experience? I have a Sams and a Walmart right next to each other but if you didnt know better if you walked into Walmart and then Sams you would have no idea its the same parent company..

I think Walmart preys upon the poor for their workforce and their customers. I have no sympathy for them as a corporation, they have been kicking the lower class for decades and they have plenty of profits and funds to properly take care of their stores and employees if they wanted to.

If anything look at Costco or Target or Kroger as a better example of a corporation instead of Walmart.

They do. It's just a larger version of a Dollar General. And I agree, it is a somewhat depressing and always aggravating experience to shop there. I happily spend a few dollars more to shop at places with happier employees and better clientele. My mental health is worth every extra penny spent.

Don. This was my answer in the other thread:

Not your opinion, or mine, that matters.  It is supply and demand. Stadiums and theaters are full. So, obviously, they are not overpaid just because we want to think they are. 
My point is the media don't generally care about them as much is all. Neither are overpaid.

People are jealous of CEOs and not other professions so much.  The president's salary is set. Not so much sure he 'runs' the country. Neither do CEOs actually. A lot of it is being paid for responsibility. Outside of a physically stressful job like firefighter---I think CEO may be he most demanding job. Look how quickly they are yanked. So the incentive to get good (great) people for the job is the pay and the benefits. This salary is not set. It is open to the free market. If GE was not willing to pay Hacksaw---you can rest assured many others would have!
If the job of president was on the open market and he could be ousted at anytime---but the reward was monetarily greater.  Then I think the candidate pool would be much stronger.  But it is simply not the case by definition. 
So. No it is not hourly.  It is paid as a reward and incentive and for potential results. I cannot imagine the pressure these guys are under. Look at how sick they get and die early etc. They also tend to leap around some for the next challenge and to change things up.  They are a unique personality. That is why only so few get to that level.

I would assume it's a lot harder to find a good CEO compared to a low skill laborer, I might be wrong though. I'm an old fashion kind of guy to, I believe you get paid what you're worth. 

So if we give these guys with absolutely no skills in life a raise to have them make a live able wage, does my pay go up as well or do I just have to eat up the costs? So what you're basically wanting to do here is devalue my engineering degree I worked my *ss off to obtain, sounds fair to me.

While I understand and even agree that nobody is 'worth' 3 million a year. CEO, athlete, actor, doctor, president---it doesn't matter what my opinion or yours is.  It is what it is.  Companies wouldn't pay it if they didn't have to. But as with anything you tend to get what you pay for --by and large.  At least you hope so. 
For example, NFL team drafts a knucklheaded QB.  They know it. But realize if they don't pay him for talent and potential --- the next team will.  Now imagine the outcry if you don't draft him and next team does and he does well.  Same with a company.  If you decide to pay your CEO 1 million tops.  You WILL NOT get or keep top talent.  Because human nature says if the next company is going to triple your salary ---you are obligated BY LAW to abandon your company that promoted you to CEO and leave them in the dust!  You have to do this within 3 minutes of receiving the next offer!  It is a requirement in life, in fact.
