Management wasn't bad and if I wanted a day off of work, I could take it.
It's really not meant to be a career and I think that's where the problem lies with most of the people that complain about wal mart. It's a starting point, nothing more nothing less. Use it to get a little extra cash and go to school to get a real career. There is not one person that works there that can't get a federal pell Grant to go to school with.
As far as taking advantage of its customers, how can you possibly say that someone is being taken advantage of when they have a choice to shop there or not?
Two things..
First, just because you didnt feel like you were being oppressed or taken advantage of, does that mean you arent? That is silly to say that because you werent being literally abused that the concept of taking advantage of the lower class employee doesnt fit. Walmart knows what they offer is needed by the lower class, they know that they can pay tepid wages, not really be concerned with developing their employees or furthering them past just using them like an orange and tossing them aside.
The reason the conditions of the stores are so poor, the morale of the employee in general is so low, that there is no interaction or sense of pride, that people just like you take the job to make some cash and who cares, that is intentional..they know all this.
It costs money and effort to develop employees, it takes a serious commitment. Firms with bad margins and high churn are not wanting to invest in their employees and the reason is short term labor savings and no real commitment to retaining employees or developing them.
I consider that taking advantage, you can go into most any Walmarts and see this in action, or better lack of action and it is just sad to be honest. Its like the organization knows that the employees hate their jobs, that the employee turnover will always be terrible and who cares...
Second..intentional product placement to take advantage of lesser educated people is abusing them...placing product as they do to max profits isnt serving the customer in a respectful way. It isnt how I would want to do business myself. They treat their customers, their employees like cattle...shove them through the line, dont worry about the customer or if your store is clean or if your employees give a crap about the customer or the organization.
Your experience at Walmart is exactly par for the course, and it is the sign of a seriously sick organization.
