same. it's only been in our later years they've started to do this wack rule. guess when your a younger buck you understand play hard or get ya ass of the court, win and get rewarded and you have no problems w/ that. It was a far more competitive mind set.
i had to quit playing 13 years ago due to knee injuries so i don't know how they do it now. i miss it though.

how old are ya, if u dont mind me asking. and how did you guys use to do it when u were still playing?

basically, you show up to the court, by yourself or with some friends, you call next and grab some other people waiting if you need them and when it's your turn, you play. whoever wins stays until they lose. if the winning team loses a guy or two along the way, they pick up whoever they want who si waiting. if you lose, you get off the court, call next and wait on the sidelines until it's your turn to play again.
the first time everyone gets there and there's more than 8 or 10 people, we did usually shoot free throws, 1st 4 or 5 on one team and second 4 or 5 on the other and whoever is left has next. every now and then we'd switch it up if the teams were obviously lopsided but only in the beginning, never after the games start.
if a game is on and 3 guys are waiting and a 4th shows up, that 4th guy asks if they have next, do they have enough and if not, can he run with them. that should be the 4th. the 5 guy to show up has next after that, and so on.
i've never heard of rotating or rock/paper/scissors. i think that's how they do it at the LGBT courts

When I play at a friend's game at a high school gym he has access to, with people that are relatives or friends, the custom is that you play a max of 2 games in a row... and people shoot free throws/3s for who plays next... so it is more random in selection...
some times it is nice to win 2 games, rest one and come back fresh to dominate 2 more... so you end up playing 4 games out of 5 and with the rest it is like a half time where your team can talk about the next games and get on the same page or just hang out...

When you play in a game that you are invited to that someone has access or paying for gym time then you go with the flow of the rules of who ever set up the game...

cheers man. think it's settled. nxt time we have 15+ 2 game max for winners. and your point about having a rest and then try and win 2 more playing 4 of 5 games is a good way of putting it.
