"Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence"

Tell me, when you sky dive, is there material evidence that the chute is gonna open? No matter how many times you have dived before or how many times you checked the chute before you jumped. Can you guarantee that the chute is gonna open for a FACT?

Is there material evidence that it is gonna open? Of course NOT.  Every humans instinct is to survive....So why does the diver still dive if there is NO MATERIAL EVIDENCE that it is gonna open?

The diver has 100% faith that the chute is gonna open otherwise he wouldnt jump.....

Hey, you guys are the ones that brought this definition up and it is the one that is making you look like fools.

LOOK AT THE DEFINITION. NOWHERE DOES IT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT FAITH.

The skydiver understands the likelihood of his chute not opening and weighs it against his desire to perform the activity. It's a basic cost/benefit analysis that humans do THOUSANDS OF TIMES PER DAY. It has NOTHING to do with faith. There is material evidence. The stats on how often people die skydiving provides you with the tools to adequately assess the risk and determine the mathematical probability you have of completing a dive safely. NO FAITH WHATSOEVER.

You need to have an unbiased open mind when reading the Holy Bible and read the entire context of the particular book you are reading and not take a few passages out of the entire context and mock it.

If you do you are not going to understand the divine message the Lord is conveying over to you. You can't be cynical and closed-minded only fools are like that.

The Book of Leviticus

The author of Leviticus was Moses written 1445-1444 B.C.

Leviticus is a rule book: a book of laws which were given by God to His people through Moses at Mount Sinai. The word Leviticus means 'pertaining to Levites." The book contains the system of laws which are administered by the Levitical priesthood. The Levites, were set apart for the work of God. God claimed the firstborn, both of men and flocks. God took the one tribe for special service to Him in lieu of the firstborn sons. The tribe was supported by the tithes of the other tribes, and they had forty-eight cities. One family of the Levites, Aaron and his sons, was set apart to be the priests; the other Levites being assistants to the priests. Their duties were to take care of the tabernacle, and later the temple. They were teachers, scribes, officers, musicians, and judges. Only those of the family of Aaron were priests however.

Genesis is a book of beginnings; Exodus is a book of redemption; Leviticus is a book dealing with atonement and a holy walk. God instructs the redeemed: "Be ye holy as I am holy" (11:44, 45; 19:2; 20:7, 26). This book emphasizes that the redeemed must be holy. One's walk with God is on the basis of holiness, with emphasis on scacrifice and separation. Leviticus pictures Jesus as our sacrifice for sin, and the things emphasized in this book foreshadow the person and work of Christ.

Faith is defined as: 1. unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence. 2. unquestioning belief in God. 3. a religion or a system of religious beliefs. 4. anything believed. 5. complete trust, confidence, or reliance. 6. allegiance to some person or thing; loyalty.

A wise person such as I, would say based on the definitions above, the sky diver indeed has faith, for without faith he would not jump because he wouldn't trust or have confidence or reliance that his chute will open safely but because he has faith in trusting with confidence that he can rely on his chute to open safely, he will jump.

So you are wrong kittycat that the sky diver has no faith, he indeed has faith before jumping out of an airplane.

Even if you say he has faith, he has faith in what exactly? He has faith that he will not die... that is NOT faith in god, it is something entirely different. You can't even begin to compare the two.

Quite the contrary joe, it's always a good subject to discuss about between the believers and non-believers and for those on the borderline. Just look at the views and posts accumulated so far on this subject. Granted in the last several days pretty much the same people are posting but that doesn't mean others are not taking a peek in here now and then to read what's going on because of their curiosity on a controversial, interesting subject.

No, he has faith the chute will open....He doesnt have MATERIAL evidence it will but has faith that it will..........

One guy in 2003 decided to make a message board post at some obscure message board and you source it and say "are you guys the only guys on the planet.....".

The Book of Numbers

The author was Moses written in 1450-1410 B.C.

Among acient titles of this book is one used in present Hebrew Bilbles; bmidbar, meaning "in the wilderness." It is taken from a word in the first line, and is descriptive of the total contents, The English title originates in the Septuagint Version LXX, from which, through the Vulgate, we get "Numbers." Only a few chapters (1-4; 26) are given to numbering (cencus taking). The bulk of the book deals with laws, regulations, and experiences of Israel in the wilderness. We must not underemphasize the significance of two censuses, one taken at Sinai in preparation for the wilderness, the other taken near the Jordan, almost forty years later, in preparation for entering the promised land. These censuses break the book into two logical divisions. Chapters 1---21 begin with a census and cover the wilderness years. Chapters 26---36 begin with the new generation census and tell of the months before entrance into Canaan, The Balaam story, which separates these two groups, forms a literary hinge.

Numbers should be studied with Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. Exodus 19:1 tells of Israel's arrival in the wilderness of Sinai in the third month after the Hebrews left Egypt. From the third to the twelfth month they received the Decalogue, instructions for building the Tabernacle, and the many detais of the sacrificial system set forth in Leviticus. In Numbers, the people are taught how to function as a camp. Their religious, civil, and military economies are set in order, in preparation for their journeying, worshiping, and conquering as a nation.

Laws and instructions for the many legal and ceremonial details of Exodus and Leviticus are interspersed througout the book. The earliest date given appears in 9:1. In the first month of the second year, the people were given regulations for keeping the Passover. Numbers 1:1, 2 tells us that Israel, while at Sinai, took a census in the second month of the second year, and received additional instructions, larely ceremonial (chapters 5---10), then left Sinai on the twentieth day of the second month beginning the second year after the Exodus (10:11). Numbers records Israel's movements from the last nineteen days at Sinai (1:1, 10:11) until arriving in the Plains of Moab, east of Jordan, in the fortieth year (Num. 22:1; 26:3; 33-50).

The sequence of events in Numbers follows: From Sinai, Israel journeyed north to the Paran Wilderness. The spies brought back a "bad report" instigated a rebellion, and the people refused to enter the land. They suffered defeat at pagan hands and were turned back to wander in the wilderness thirty-eight more years. After this they traveled to the plains of Moab, east of the Jordan, and defeated and occupied all of Trans-Jordan north of the river Arnon. Here they fell into sin with the Moabite and Midianite women and worshiped their gods. Israel, as a new generation, was numbered again, and at the command of God destroyed the Midianites. Gad and Reuben and the half trible of Manasseh were given possesions east of the Jordan. Moses appointed Joshua his successor. Chapters 20---36 deal with events of the fortieth year (36:13).

Like the rest of the Pentateuch, authorship of Numbers is attributed to Moses. Eighty or more claims presented in the book state that "the Lord said to Moses" or that "Moses recorded their starting places..." (33:2). God intervenes in the course of human events. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt was supernatural. The account of Balaam and Balak (Num. 22---24) is the only passage in the book not expressly attributed to Moses and where Moses is not mentioned. Undoubtedly Moses was the inspired author.

You forgot these...

95. God displays his hospitality with the admonition: "The stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death." 1:51
96. Two of Aaron's sons are killed by God for "offering strange fire before the Lord." 3:4

97. God repeats his order (see 1:51) to kill any strangers who happen to come near. 3:10

98. Once again (see 1:51 and 3:10) God tells his favorite people to kill any strangers that come near. 3:38

99. Don't touch or "go in to see when the holy things are covered." God kills people who touch or look at uncovered holy things. 4:15, 4:20

100. "And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it." (He had his hearing aid on.) He then burns the complainers alive. That'll teach them. 11:1

101. "And wile the flesh [of the quails] was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague. "The Bible isn't too clear about what these poor folks did to upset God so much; all it says is that they had "lusted." 11:33

102. More plagues and pestilence sent by God. God repeats one of his favorite promises: "your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness." 14:12, 29, 14:32-37

103. God gives more instructions for the ritualistic killing of animals. The smell of burning flesh is "a sweet savour unto the Lord." 15:3, 13-14, 24

104. The Israelites find a man picking up sticks on the sabbath. God commands them to kill him by throwing rocks at him. 15:32-36

105. Because of a dispute between Korah and Moses, God makes the ground open up and it swallows Korah and his family. And then, just for the hell of it, God has a fire burn 250 men (friends of Korah?) to death. 16:20-49

106. After God killed Korah, his family, and 250 innocent bystanders, the people complained saying, "ye have killed the people of the Lord." So God, who doesn't take kindly to criticism, sends a plague on the people. And "they that died in the plague were 14,700." 16:41-50

107. God threatens to kill those who murmur. To which the people reply, "Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish .... Shall we be consumed with dying?" 17:12-13

108. According to this verse, it is wise to stay away from holy things and places -- like churches. God will kill you if you get too close. 18:3

Why, then don't Bible-believers perform these sacrifices anymore? Don't they realize how God must miss the "sweet savour" of burning flesh? Don't they believe God when he says "forever"? 18:17-19

111. Don't get near holy things or "pollute" them. If you do, God will kill you. 18:22, 32

112. The purification of the unclean. These absurd rituals, cruel sacrifices, and unjust punishments are vitally important to God. He even insists that they are to be "a perpetual statute" to all humankind. 19:1-22

113. "And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities." This verse demonstrates the power of prayer: If you ask God, he will destroy entire cities for you. 21:3

114. God sends "fiery serpents" to bite his chosen people, and many of them die. 21:6

115. God delivers the Amorites into Moses' hands. (You're in God hands with Moses.) So Moses does the usual thing, killing everyone "until their was none left alive." 21:34-35

116. God's people will kill like a lion and then "drink the blood of the slain." 23:24

117. God, who is as strong as a unicorn, will eat up the nations, break their bones, and then pierce them through with his arrows. What a guy! 24:8

118. After the people "commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab," Moses has them all killed. Then God tells Moses to hang their dead bodies up in front of him; God says that this will satisfy him. 25:1-5
