My 9 year old West Highland Terrier (Angel) is in her second bout with cancer. 1st time she beat it (Dec 09) surgery to remove a spindle-cell tumor. Came out of it 100%.
Beginning of August I heard her wheezing. Took her to vet immediately. Lymphoma, incurable. 1-2 months. We're there now.
Here's the question:
When I put her to sleep do I stay in the room with her and have that as my last memory, which I'm leaning toward heavily. I don't think I can live with just watching her led away. Opinions would be very appreciated, especially experienced ones.

Be strong , be her leader. it will be so much easier for her having you there.
Ive done this a few times. you cant worry about how it will affect you, at this moment it's all about her. Wouldnt you like to be surrounded by loved ones on your death bed ??? Think about it.......

I paid a vet to come to my house to put Lilly down. She was such a great dog and I wanted her last moments to be at her home with her family. It seemed like the best choice for her and for us, as she was happy laying beside me instead of scared at a vet's office. It was a heartbreaking experience none the less and there's no easy way out. I feel for you, bro.

I agree, if you can do it, be there for her. Being there could help keep her at ease in her final moments, which based on how heavy this is weighing on you, I'm sure is important to you.

My first Rottweiler had a heart attack and died in my arms. That's the only way to go. You will cry like a baby. And that's OK. Stay with her, hug her, and let her go while in your arms.

It will be very peaceful....The Dr. will give her a shot that will put her into a deep sleep, then another to make her heart stop. It will be very peaceful,it's the right thing to do. You have been a GREAT SOLDIER , now let her go in peace and you will se her on the otherside.Your pain will last for a long while,as it should when you lose a part of your family.Time heals all wounds...

Although she's still happy, her breathing is getting labored and at night it seems to be the worst. Another difficult thing is the right time to do this. Certainly you don't want to do it to early, but then I can't make her suffer either and this horrible disease isn't going to get better.

I just went thru this in February with my pet.Man it was so hard and painful and still hurts but I had to do what was best for my pet.I feel so sorry for you.I personally don't think there is a definite answer to be there or leave as its up to the person.

you already know the right answer... but it is the harder path in the moment... but I think if you are not there you will regret it later...
so it is the best thing to do for the animal and for yourself.

vets are too quick to put dogs down...get essaic tea from the vitamin shoppe or mrs. greens and start giving it to her right away...look into other possible cures before taking her...

I started rescuing boxers several years ago....Boxers are prone genetically to various disorders...at the top of the list cancerous tumors. In the past 12 years I have had to put down 7 of my best friends in the world and I was faced with your dilemma as well. I am so glad I chose to sit on the floor and hold my friends in my arms as the procedure took place. They deserve to have you there with them in their final moments. It's the last gift you will ever have a chance give to them. And that memory....along with its tears....will linger in your heart as a cherished memory.

Sounds like you have a lot of love to give. Don't let your grief keep you from finding another friend very soon. Sometimes we feel a guilt thinking about getting another so soon....But your friend would want you to....and you will be better for it....and so will your new friend.....maybe find a rescue.
