What is Clooney asking for in Oceans 11 when he asks for ....

There's a scene in Oceans 11 where Clooney's character, obviously Danny Ocean, is sitting with Tess (Julia Roberts) and a waiter comes up to the table. Ocean says, "How ya doin'?"  He then asks for a "whiskey....and a whiskey." What exactly is he ordering? LOL I have asked some bartenders but they never are sure what he means. Any ideas?

You losers are some of the dumbest motherfuckers on earth. He didn't ask for "a double shot of whiskey." Hence, since I, and NO bartender that I have spoken to in either Vegas or Cleveland had heard of somebody placing this order, it was a question of what exactly is he ordering. Get it?
 
Yes, one shot and one shot is a double. But THAT is not what he said.

As a former bartender, I can tell you, 100%, that he ordered a double, he just said it in an unusual way

You have to watch the scene to know what the question is.
 
Ocean deliberately measures out and amount (with his fingers) and says "whiskey." He then measures another amount, half the size of the first one, and says, "and a whiskey."
 
That is why NO bartender has been able to answer the question. I figured somebody here at covers would be more sophisticated and could answer it simply, and explain why he does it that way.

I've seen that scene numerous times....
 
He's doing it that way because most peopel are used to having a double shot of whiskey in bars and most bars, when giving a double shot, cheapskate on the whiskey adn only give 1 and a half shots
 
But most importantly, this is a fucking movie, the character pours those amounts because it's in the fucking script, he has no reason for it, he's doing it because that's what the scene calls for

I think we all get the reason why a character in a movie does something. Because it's in the script.  The question was what did it mean.

Crazy old thread. For the record, he's ordering a double. He's ordering a whiskey, and then backing it up with another finger or so of whiskey.

Dialogue is the earmark of a Steven Soderbergh film and Ted Griffin banged out an outstanding screenplay. Lingo is a big part of this film. These are all hep cats and it's not so much what they say but how they say it. Even the act of ordering a drink becomes an exercise in cool.

Looks like he meant a whiskey in a tumbler glass (either on the rocks or neat) and another shot of of whiskey on the side
