Took in some Tony Romo Rookie Refractor cards the other day to the local card shop...going rate right now is 40% of book value. And he only buys rookies. I'm not talking Dez Bryant rookie cards either....Brady, Pujols, LeBron...you get the point...

I collected during the 80's when you could get a pack of 15 cards for $.50 cents. (Upper Deck were more when they first came out)
The other day I saw a pack, it was $1.99 for 6 cards...How the hell is a young kid suppose to put together a decent collection with those prices?
Yep. I used to love collecting. Sometimes I think about starting up again, but the only interest I have is in Steelers cards and maybe some other stars of the league. It is a very expensive hobby these days though. And the truth of it is, many of these cards that are "worth" 20-40-60 bucks wont be worth the paper they're printed on in five years.
For example... look at what these people on Ebay are getting for these Emmanuel Sanders cards. This is a complete joke and you'd have to be an idiot to spend this money. They will not have any return I guarantee it. In ten years, these cards will be worth almost nothing. Yet people are spending the money on cards of players like these, and he has done almost nothing! Now if you want to spend some cash on a really good Brady card, then yes you might be making a good investment.
