Electric companies did a horrible job managing the situation as well as not being prepared for this by choosing not to winterize grids. What service failures they' ve had probably could have been minimized.

Gas fireplaces are a fucking joke. Couldn't imagine relying on one for actual heat. They are more for ambience.

Just saw the Houston skyscrapers all lit up last night while surrounding neighborhoods were pitch black.

Horrible situation here in Houston we equaled a 122 yr low of 13 degrees last night. Can’t Fund a hotel anywhere and people are sleeping in the lobbies of hotels just to stay warm. Yes I live in the heights area and I am one of those in the dark while looking at a lit up skyline. The situation here is dire. Received a phone call from the city stating don’t call 911 b/c of overload instead call the police department. 58 pct of Houston households have no power which equals millions. Spent the day in my car with my heater on now back to the fireplace.

I hear ya I know exactly where Lake Lewisville is b/c I met Dennis Rodman on one of his 2 ciagarette boats he had parked there in the early 90’s. He had Madonna custom painted along the side of it and the other had flames. Dennis threw some great parties and he was also always the one picking up the tab. Hated to see his financial woes but the guy has an amazing heart.

If you owned a generator and some fuel, you could have your house lit up too. I assume that is what the skyscrapers are doing. If they have power from the utility because they are rich, then that is messed up.

Turn off right wing propaganda...Turbines work great in Antarctica...
Texas refused go update their grids ... No one is to blame except texas government

Feel bad for you Texans. Always knew down South the road crews and drivers couldn't handle ice and snow, now the power grid.
Doubleup is right, turbines work in the cold, I see thirteen of those big bastards out my kitchen window. It was -28 F here yesterday morning, they're still turning. Why? Because they are not coated in ice. Ice buildup on the blades makes them too heavy to turn. ICE stopped them, not cold. But I heard Biden is cancelling ICE, so no worries! (couldn't help myself)
Am sure the lack of turbines and solar panels covered ice contributed to this problem and I am sure the utilities were also caught with their "pants down".
How many of you Texans actually have a real furnace?? (natural gas/propane/heating oil) Not many I guess. No, you use your A/C units as heat pumps. Works great with temps above 30-35 F. But when it's cold they SUCK the electricity and can't keep up. HUGE DEMAND. Don't hear that on the news.
I'm betting the utilities relaxed once the hot summer was gone and lowered their output as they do every winter. Only this time the cold was like a 125F day in July as far as electrical consumption. Opps!!!!
As far as not being as low as 12 F in 122 years, I think you left out the important part of "ON THIS DATE". Records show Houston had lows below 12 F in 1989, 1949, 1940, and 1930. https://www.currentresults.com/Yearly-Weather/USA/TX/Houston/extreme-annual-houston-low-temperature.php
Have to laugh when I hear Bill Gates say it's caused by climate change. This shit has been going on sense the dawn of time. Oh yes, the earth is overall warming, not questioning that, but every f-ing time the weather gets bad; CLIMATE CHANGE, CLIMATE CHANGE!!! Sorry fellas, not buying the hysteria.

Apparently, inadequate preparation for unexpected extreme weather. In Texas, most electricity is generated from natural gas power plants. Frozen natural gas pipelines are the problem. Wind turbines are just a minor source of electricity. However in Iowa, 40% of electricity still comes from wind turbines despite cold weather. Unlike 47 states, Texas can't access electricity from other states because it isn't part of national power grids. To prevent future blackouts, more investment is needed to improve infrastructure.

60 generators & 10k gallons of diesel are sitting in Ft. Worth waiting for the state to determine where they should be dispatched.
Governor Abbott is incompetent & overwhelmed.

I know WEATHER is disgruntled.
It will pass a super low has formed in northern Canada causing the jet to move farther south.
This low will be retreating back to the pole by all for casts. As the temperatures in the north the south will returned to more climate temperatures next week. For those turning to the gas stove to heat as stupid as it sounds crack a Window so that fresh air can circulate. Gas is burning oxygen making carbon dioxide and steam to escape hence repeating the rooms oxygen supply.

Price gouging is being reported in Texas.
We had that problem years ago after Hurricane Andrew.
But the state passed a law that licenses would be revoked if caught price gouging.
Problem solved. We no longer have a panic to get gas for generators or water or food.
Our power company FPL (Flicker, Plunder & Loot) is completing the underground laying of power lines to reduce outages during hurricanes.
It's taken 4 years but if you don't take action you will get repeat disasters like Texas is experiencing.

Thats a great idea. But eventually you need more fuel and here in Parker and Palo Pinto Tx its hard to find. A few windmills froze up and created a fuel shortage. If ercot hadnt flipped the switch abbott said the whole state could of been out for months.

Higher risk of extreme weather is evidence of climate change. According to American meteorological society, arctic warming disrupts polar vortex to move cold air mass south. Normally, polar vortex keeps cold air contained in the north pole. Vast majority of top climate scientists accept climate change because of overwhelming scientific evidences. But deniers are mostly non-experts. Even pentagon recognizes global warming as a threat to national security.

Stay warm and be smart, been in this situation more than once....Its February people, one of the coldest months we have....Dont fall for the climate change hoax because you would be better burning your money instead of letting the government waste it on so called climate change...Quit trusting media and government and think for yourself....People act like they were born yesterday and never seen weather....Keep listening to the fake media and learn to thin I for yourself....Every storm the media acts like its never happened and push push push climate change...March gets pretty cold as well so be ready for the worst and hope spring comes early.,.I own property on the west coast and east coast on the water and same level the past 20 years.....Have a great weekend and stay safe, Knock!

Ours in Maine are working well and it's always way colder than 9 degrees. We have over 3000 windmills producing electricity. Operating fine.
If Texas had eased regulations of the design and used the sub zero grease ours have yours would work similar. But it would be huge undertaking to replace all the grease in your existing system to prevent cold weather freeze ups.

Tips from oath keepers.
1.Cold weather survival is not something most Texans are familiar with. Here are things to consider for yourselves and helping your neighbors.
2. Pay attention to your immediate neighbors and surrounding neighborhoods.
3. Pay attention to what is going on outside. If you see someone in trouble, stop and help. Approach cautiously since they may be wary of a stranger.
4. Many neighborhoods now have an on-line App called “Neighbors” or “Next-door” that can be useful for getting the word out.
5. In many cases just passing on information regarding location for availability of needed items is sufficient.
6. When roads become passable, running errands or transporting others to stores and medical appointments is important.
7. If you must go out, dress appropriately for the temperature (wind chill, not air temperature)
8.Recognize the extreme risk of driving. Walk if possible. Not only is there risk of an accident due to icy / slick roads, there is also risk of breakdown. Cold affects electric circuits, tire pressures, hydraulic systems and especially batteries.
9. If / when you do go out, carry a reliable communication device with you. Accidents, breakdowns and medical conditions are aggravated by cold weather. No one can help you if they don’t know there is a problem.
10. Take care of yourself and your family. If they are not safe, then they may become a drain on society and take away from support to others.
