NZD/usd has been resting on the 50% Fib line for the last couple of hours ( .7274) , it has been toying with a drop below for the past hour or so.  I'm going to drop down from the 4 hrs. to the 1 hrs. to get a good entry. What I am waiting for is consecutive candles that close below the .7274 area (may even move down to the 30 min candles) .  Looking for this to go down to the next level @ .7214 and possibly to the 23% @ .7141

    Multiple day trade,  (entry unsure)

Sell two lots @ (around) .7272

    limit 1 @ .7245

    limit 2 .7141

Still not impressed, but getting closer, 4 o clock candle on the one hour charts ended with a "gravestone Doji"   noted by a raise that ended flat.(upside down T)

this is a good indicator of bearish posturing.

I think that the downward movement is good confirmation of the overall trend , strengthened by the 4 o clock candle closing ,  then the move down past the FIb level where it is currently.

    Pulling the trigger boys.

    wish me luck .

LImit one hit for 31 pips, currently resting about the 38%  Fib Level.    .7214  IF current candle closes above and shows any sign of reversal I may close it today .   If it goes to .7236 I will close it,   .7189  looks like resistance

    We shall see.

Lost another one.. USD/CAD triggered my stop overnight... lost about 70 pips overall

Now I remember why I quit doing this... because I SUCK AT THIS!    I can't make a profitable trade to save my life...

Oh well, I've got just over $700 left in my mini account.. consider that I started with $1,000.. may as well use it and hope for the best...

Went long on EUR/USD at 1.4565.  Looking like it should recover, of course, if you are reading this, go SHORT on this now.. fading me =

I am telling you...stops will drain your account quickly.

Deep pockets and being able to average and not have it kill you is how you survive.

It goes against every investing wisdom I know but for some reason the Forex market hits stops and takes the cash.

Ive never had a feel for the US.CD pair either, it is tough without a doubt.

I switched sides on the EUR/USD. now I went SHORT on it... It's in freefall as far as I can tell, Euro countries are struggling.. It's just too big a trend to go against.  So, I am short at 1.4550

I don't understand how you can expect to be profitable long term with not taking any losses. Ask the guys at Long Term Capital how that eventually works out.

    True..

But a 50 pip stop loss is WAY too tight..you have to be able to manage a losing position and not get thrown around by the movements.

Legging INTO a trade and out leaving plenty of room for mistakes has to be the way to trade the Forex.

Having enough margin to afford legging in a few and not being hurt is key.

IF I could interject something that has helped me, is having a checklist.

-1  I check the overbought/oversold and the RSI,
    -2 The DMI crosses
    -3 the Fibonacci levels
    -4 the Candles (formations etc)
-5 Lastly I will check the news for any reports that could upset a trend or help a trend

when 3- 5 out of five are supporting my pick I.E. the NZD/  USD trade I am in which had 4 out of five (not being overbought when I sold )   I have A high rate of success.

I am going to start keeping track in the new year.

And I agree that a 50 pip initial stop is a bit too small.

I only use small stops when I am exiting a profitable position to prevent it from going negative.

Ok. I don't know anything about trading forex but the hallmark of a decent trader to me is always taking small losses and letting the winners run, not being right 99% of the time and losing money because of not taking a loss that should have been small.

    dave,

I am with you on your thinking btw..my experience was first as a stock trader but the way these pairs are leveraged, they can smack down tight stops and you can be right on the trade but the stop will prohibit you from being correct.

Out of all my losing trades on Forex, I would say less than 5 would have been HIGHLY profitable if I had allowed them to work and average in.

Having deep pockets and being able to swim in the red for a while is how you have to play the Forex..

I been doing this for some time now and there hasnt been many trades that wouldnt/havent worked out if if you can wait them out...If you can find the trend, fib levels or res/support you can survive almost anything...as long as you have the cash to back it up....

I disagree about trying to be right a high % of the time...i havent sold out of a trade for a loss for a few months...not saying im awesome or anything just that you can work your way out of a jam..and im not nearly as good of a tech guy as Rick,Wall....hell or Rink and the rest of the traders that play in stocks...

    Out of NZD/USD
Candles setting up for a hold above .7220
    DMI cross comming?
    RSI agrees.
Still good for over 80 pips,
    not too shabby

I will watch because if it breaks that .7230  area it could be good for a rise back up to the .7260 ,

    Overall trend still looks bullish.

Might go long with this one if it closes the 4 hr  above the 38% Fib

Article about the upcoming Fomc statement,  Due out Tomorrow.

We already know that nothing will change, but it could still effect the USD,  (may be wise to take profits or hold off til after release)

This is cut and paste from Kathy Lien who works for FX360 and has written a couple of books on Currency trading.

How the U.S. dollar trades for the remainder of the year will be largely dependent upon the outcome of Wednesday’s Federal Reserve monetary policy announcement. Over the past 2 weeks, the dollar has strengthened significantly and the central bank’s degree of hawkishness will determine whether the dollar will break its 3 month high against the euro.  The sharp moderation in job losses and improvement in consumer spending will cause the Federal Reserve to grow more comfortable with the outlook for the U.S. economy. However there are still plenty of reasons why the Fed may not want to appear overly hawkish and therefore quite a bit of uncertainty rests with tomorrow’s FOMC statement. Although we believe that the Fed will underwhelm, dollar bulls may not need much to be satisfied and therefore any subtle changes to the language of the FOMC statement could affect how the dollar trades. A more upbeat tone by the Fed would be positive for the dollar while skepticism about the sustainability of the improvements in the labor market or consumer spending could reverse the greenback’s recent gains.

The 3 things that investors will be looking for tomorrow will be the tone of the FOMC statement, changes to the discount rate and any plans to end emergency programs.  We only expect the bare minimum from the Fed because they realize that at this critical juncture in the U.S. recovery, there are more consequences than benefits to being overly hawkish. Now let’s take a look at these 3 questions in further detail:

    1)     What will be the Tone of the FOMC Statement?

The Federal Reserve provided very little optimism and very little action when they met on November 4th. At that time, the central bank was weary of a jobless recovery and losses in the commercial real estate sector. They were also mindful of the risks associated with a weak dollar and low interest rates. Since that meeting, the U.S. economy has improved. According to the table at the end of this article, the labor market has taken a turn for the better along with consumer spending and confidence. Inflationary pressures also accelerated, while asset prices increased. However the latest non-manufacturing ISM report indicated that activity contracted last month. Given that the service sector represents more than 70 percent of the U.S. economy, the slowdown is certainly worrisome. The manufacturing sector, which previously led the recovery, is also slowing. Furthermore, less than 36 hours after the non-farm payrolls report was released, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke gave a speech warning about the risks facing the economy which suggests he is not convinced the improvements are here to stay. Therefore we expect a slightly more hawkish but still very cautious tone from the Fed which should help the dollar extend its gains. However the reaction in the dollar should be tempered by the strong likelihood of the Fed repeating the well worn statement that interest rates will remain “at exceptionally low levels” for an “extend period.”

    2)     Will the Fed Raise the Discount Rate?

Spurred by an article today’s Financial Times about the upcoming FOMC rate decision, there is now speculation that the central bank could raise the discount rate. In our view this is extremely unlikely because we expect the Fed to first announce plans to unwind some of their emergency measures before taking this relatively bold move. Raising the discount rate, which is the rate that regional Federal Reserve banks lend to commercial banks would carry with it hawkish monetary policy connotations. It also would be at odds with the Fed’s commitment to keep interest rates low and plans to taper off asset purchases. However the fact that the Financial Times has raised this option reflects the growing division within the FOMC. Certain Fed officials are more hawkish than others and we expect the division on monetary policy to increase as the economy continues to improve.

    3)     Will the Fed Announce Plans to Unwind Emergency Measures?

Given the Federal Reserve’s commitment to slow their pace of asset purchases over the next few months and to complete their program by the end of the first quarter, we expect the central bank to step up their plans to unwind emergency measures. There is a good chance that they will also end other emergency programs and any specifics on this front should also be positive for the U.S. dollar.
