won the MLB playoff contest a couple years ago, 35-12 record won $1,000.

Each system has positives and negatives. Like what happens when average joe loses his $6k start up? Is he out for a month and then can re start with $6k, which is similar to a real-life scenario? I can assure you then he won't come back to the website, meaning less customers etc. is not good for business!
Just my two cents on the flip side to having a limited bankroll...

As the original inventor of this online contest format I can tell you that the current format is pretty decent.  I have been running the same ca$h contest since the early 90's which Covers eventually copied and practically named after my contest. 

I have tried on a few occasions over the years to adjust and change the format to acknowledge most of the concerns mentioned in these posts with no success.  The only significant change from the current format that pleased most contestants was by adding 5% vig to the plays.  This is what I would recommend Covers does with their contests.  Parlays are indeed the worst thing that can be added, we did it for 3 years & like Benny said.  Some guy eventually hits an 8 teamer and blows everyone away.  The contest then becomes a lottery every week to see who can hit the next one.

Bennyup and Blacksheep are right on.  If you don't like these contests, start your own.  The numbers justify the popularity of the formats.

IF YOU LIVED IN VEGAS AND PAYED FOR THOSE CONTESTS YOU WOULD HAVE TO PICK EVERY GAME, THEY ALSO HAVE THE SURVIOR BETS MAYBE THATS SOMETHING COVERS.COM COULD LOOK INTO. PICK 5 GAMES AND KEEP GOING UNTILL YOU LOSE ALL 5. THE NEXT DAY YOU MIGHT HAVE 4 AND THEN SO ON. PLAYERS WOULD JUST PICK THERE FAVORITE 5

Some interesting points on this topics. I like it just the way it is. This simply is a contest for fun. If it doesn't work for you, don't play.

Another way is to only pick the games you feel confident with, nothing says anyone has to pick every game on the board. I don't think there's any advantage making 32 picks for 16 football games with spreads and totals, if one were to make say 5 solid picks it's less of a lottery and more skill and feel for the games.  Probably a better chance of going 5-0 or 4-1 rather than trying to go 20-12 for essentially the same results, the more games picked that are lost, the more the vig eats away at the games that are won.

It's not hard to read between the lines with all the post's about this.  Those that are very sharp make their point and comment on how to make it better, those that think they have the real answer need to check-out of their ego trip and get grounded to what is really going on.  I seldom post but I love reading what everyone thinks.

unfortunate this is OVER a year old. i see a lot of legit issues on here, but the forum is horribly slow activity wise. i remember it took like 2 years of a thread going to get a new ultimate race.

i agree 100% with the topic creator. would be nice to see a limit or something for league contests. like he said, basically everyone at the top of the contests just bets 500 x2 for every game

To me the biggest weakness of the site overall is that there is no career rankings and thus no incentive to not start a new identity every day/month/year.

Couldn't you utilize a budget option but levy a penalty for re-upping?  If you give a bankroll of $10k to start, you lose it, you can re-up for $5000 as (many times as you want), but in terms of the contest, a re-up costs you $7.5k in penalty at the end of the contest.

So to illustrate:

Joe Blow NFL Week 1    -10,000    Total Score 0
Joe Blow Re-Up             +5,000     Total Score -7,500
Joe Blow Week 2          +8,000     Total Score 500
Joe Blow Week 3          +3,000     Total Score 3,500

By the end of Week 3, Joe Blow has a $11,000 bankroll, but his contest score is really only $3,500.

I mean it's pretty much like betting on credit in real life (with juice).  Those who never bust have the advantage because it takes those who bust longer to catch up.  And those who bust multiple times are punished as they should be.

Just a thought.

you do not need to pick every game plus overs or unders ...

I proably can do 70% or better just picking 10 games and leave the coin flips alone ......i also notice that many of lines in contest are moved off the true betting line known as the covers line.

like you want a dog + 2 .5 knowing game will be tight and then it goes to +1 + 1.5 games falls on 2 points
