Hard to argue with something, in this extended preview, i don't think anything meaningful was overlooked, this a really comprehensive look at the NY Yankees and as someone who follows the team closely, there isn't much i don't agree with or could add.
I guess the phrase which defines the Yankees this season is: the next man up. Even though it's mind-boggling, for a team to have so many injuries, i guess their depth saved them, coupled with breakout seasons for guys like Urshela or Tauchman.
Pitching wise, imo their bullpen lived up to the expectations, with minor fails here and there, but overall they've been solid, especially since the injuries to the main rotation forced them to use an opener strategy, which proved to be highly efficient: Yankees are 10-2 when Green is used as an opener. Here is an insane stat: when Kahnle, Ottavino, Britton and Chapman are used in a game with a lead, the Yankees are 22-0!
The starting pitching has been the Achilles heal of this Yankees team, they have a 4.50 ERA, but the worst part of this pitching staff, that has plagued all the starters, is the long ball, they've given up 205 home runs, way more than any other respectable rotation of any top teams.
This upcoming schedule is brutal, yeah they have a comfortable lead but there is a real risk they could o 1-5 after these 6 games. There is something strange about German, he has good stuff, especially his off-speed, if he has that going for him he can keep the team in the game, until the bullpen to step in, but when his off-speed is not working he tends to go to his fastball, which kinda gets hit hard.
The Athletics have lost only one season series to New York since 2011,
going 5-1-1 while winning 29 of 46 games. The clubs complete their 2019
set on Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at Yankee Stadium.
I rather see the Yankees getting swept in LA, than in Oakland, if not German tonight, maybe Tanaka on Thursday can get them a win, especially Tanaka, who seems to have ended his slump, his last 2 outings have been encouraging.
Again, great write-up MrBator
