Tomlin has been one of the guys that actually performed to my
expectations in his first start and I still feel he is undervalued. Verlander
has been very disappointing in spite of the impressive comeback he made last
year. Based on performance I also award the offensive edge to the Tribe, in a
graded righty versus righty matchup. At +$ Tomlin is the better risk.
Red Sox +132, Wright/McHugh
Please do not confuse Steven Wright of Boston with Mike Wright of
Baltimore, there is a great deal of difference between the two, but since both
are recent call ups to the major league level, at about the same time last
year, it would be easy to confuse the two with each other. I assure you I have
not done that. The Wright that goes tonight (pardon the poetry) has been steady
and on projection in each of his two quality starts to date and McHugh has been
very disappointing. The BoSox lost 2 of 3 to the Rays at home but only a 1-1
split versus righty and that is where their offense excels, with a 40.2 rating
and 6.30 oera. They have given 10 quality offensive performances in those 13
games and it was only Smyly, the lefty, that actually shut them down. The other
loss was on a bad day for David Price, but that does not affect their offensive
probability.

A day without baseball is like a day without sunshine. I believe this is the first day of the season without any day games and us old retired curmudgeons don't like to live like that.

Hey Key, off subject of your plays...in the off season we discussed pitch framing by catchers. Yesterday in the Blue Jays and Orioles game Umpire Dan Bellino was fooled by the Jays catcher repeatedly through out the game. I had Estrada at only 6 official K's(by my eye) but the boxscore showed him w/ 9 after the outting.
The catcher would move his glove at least a foot at some times, it was quite noticeable. Crap like that can change the outcome of a game.
Most umps are better than that like you mentioned to me before. But that particular Ump, I have an asterisk next to his name for future reference.

Track him. The MLB management and umpires association will. It will not be tolerated if it is that bad. Is he a new guy? They shouldn't even be called up from the minors with a habit like that. I am surprised he would make the cut with a tendency like that. These guys are schooled and examined on that very thing. Never ever call the pitch based on the position of the catcher's mitt. watch the zone and the approach of the ball, never look down.

192 games under his belt. He's got the 3rd highest career K rate of all the umps in the league. It could be that maybe he just calls the low strike and the frame didn't matter. will keep tabs

Wright has pitched well but has been the victim of no run support. Plan on watching the game tonight but I can't stomach watching knuckleballers. Drive me crazy. Walk the bases loaded and then strike out the side. Leaves me pulling my hair out if I bet on them.
