for favorite movies I think you almost have to go by "category"
Heroic Drama = The Spirit of St. Louis (1957) with Jimmy Stewart as Charles Lindbergh. The Right Stuff (1983) a close second
Historic Drama = Anonymous (2011) VERY well acted story that supposes the early plays of William Shakespeare were actually written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford to foment revolution against Queen Elizabeth 1st's advisors William and Robert Cecil. it is an EXCELLENT introduction to Shakespear. also the two Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I of England movies, Elizabeth (1998) and the follow on Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). both have historical inaccuracies BUT are VERY well done. IF you liked the Showtime series The Tudors, you will enjoy these three
"screwball" comedy = It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963). THE epic screwball comedy of the 20th century with almost every comedic star from the first half of the century involved. 2 1/2 hours of non-stop laughter that NEVER gets old
"sports" comedy = Let It Ride (1989) closely followed by Slap Shot (1977)
"crime" comedy = Snatch (2000)
Science Fiction = just about any of the Star Trek movies but esp Star Trek: First Contact (1996) with Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. "classic" SciFi like The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956)
"modern" horror = all the Alien series including the latest "prequel" Prometheus (2012) BUT esp the 1979 original which I think is the most suspenseful movie ever made.
the 2000 Shadow of the Vampire about the filming of Nosferatu is an "under-rated unknown". the plot supposes that Max Schreck who played the vampire Count Orlok in the movie really WAS a vampire and is a favorite because of the acting by Willem Dafoe as Schreck (which means "Fear" or "Terror" in German)
"classic" horror = Dracula (1931) with Bela Lugosi, Frankenstein (1931) with Boris Karloff as the monster and F.W. Murnau 1922 silent masterpiece Nosferatu.
"war" movies = I don't know HOW one can chose between Apocalypse Now is a 1979, Platoon (1986) or Full Metal Jacket (1987) as the favorite Vietnam era war movie. my OVERALL war movie favorite is the 1949 Task Force with Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan about the history of Naval Aviation thru WWII. close second is the 1942 WWII "kill the Japanese" propaganda movie Wake Island

I too appreciate the Godfather trilogy or saga. Same one you talk about that is more chronological, starting with Vito as a little boy in Sicily. The best part of it was there were added scenes that did not appear in the theatrical version. Meaning more De Niro at his finest!!!!!!

Platoon.
I actually thought Alien 3 was pretty well acted. Alien Resurrection (1997), not so much. have developed an appreciation for Prometheus I didn't have when I first saw the movie. think it's one you have to see at least three times to catch all the subplots. also think IF they do a "redux" and add cut footage, there will be scenes that clean up questions.
Shawshank IS a great movie esp with the narration by Morgan Freeman as "Red". another great Freeman movie is Driving Miss Daisy (1989) which the wife can't pass up when it's on TV. he was also excellent in the "crime-horror" movie Se7en (1995) with Brad Pitt which has a very "Blade Runner" feel to it.

Platoon.
I lean toward Apocalypse Now BUT the 2001 "Redux" version that added 49 minutes of scenes that had been cut out of the original film. the extra "Kilgore" and "Bunny Base" scenes are no big deal in adding the the plot BUT the "French Plantation" scenes definitely "fill out" the movie and answers some questions like what happened to "Clean's" remains after he is killed? should have never been edited from the original. the helicopter attack scene to Wagner's Walkurenritt is one of the best uses of classical music/opera EVER in a movie.
BUT I can also make an argument for Full Metal Jacket because of R. Lee Ermey as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. we had Marine Drill Instructors for military training when I went thru Navy Officer/preflight training at NAS Pensacola in 1966 and Ermey gave me flashbacks.
btw, HOW Tom Berenger as Sergeant Barnes in Platoon is NOT on the AFI's top 50 movie villains list is beyond me. he and Gary Oldman as Stansfield in The Professional sure deserve to be on that list more than lame selections like "Man" in Bambi, "The Martians" in War of the Worlds or "The Shark" in Jaws

You can easily make an argument for Apocalypse
But 'Full Metal Jacket'?..I don't know...The first half of that movie is all time great..The second half..I can't even remember what happens. And I've seen that movie like 40 times.

don't know HOW I missed the 1930 "anti-war" classic All Quiet on the Western Front from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque as the absolute BEST in the "war" genre. the novel and movie were SO powerful that they were banned in many countries esp the fascist dictatorships of Germany and Italy but also Australia and France
the 1930 version won the Best Picture Oscar with Lew Ayres as Paul Baumer, Louis Wolheim as Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky and John Wray as Himmelstoss. the 1979 made for TV remake with Richard Thomas as Paul, Ernest Borgnine as "Kat" and Ian Holm as Himmelstoss is also excellent. in many ways both Borgnine and Holm are even better in their roles than Wolheim and Wray in the original. some of the scenes in the 1979 version, like the horses being caught in an artillery barrage, are even more horrific than the 1930 movie
a close second in "anti-war" has to be the 1957 Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglas as regiment commander Colonel Dax, Adolphe Menjou as corps commander Major General Broulard and George Macready as division commander Brigadier General Mireau. it is based on the true story of four French soldiers during World War I, under General Geraud Reveilhac, executed for mutiny in Souain, France. Macready's character is based on Reveihac
all three run on Turner Classic Movies every so often. in fact, Paths of Glory was just on Saturday July 27th. ALL definite "must see"

Best War movie might be 'Glory' with Denzel, M. Freeman and whats his name, Ferris Bueller guy.
I forget about that movie, but then when I see it I'm all like "Gahdam that's a good movie and what not."
