Movies in November

I know Rink starts these threads but I thought I'd ignite after watching

NO problem, Slobbasaurus. been busy with NHL, college football and handicapping the golf tourneys so NO real times for movies. this about the first one worth mentioning i saw this month

Taken 3 (2014) the third and final installment in the Taken trilogy. stars Liam Neeson, Forest Whitaker, Maggie Grace, and Famke Janssen. same excellent action, car chases and "oddles of ordnance" as the first two BUT wiht more of a "mystery" to the plot. critics said was "stale" (Rotten Tomatoes with a putrid 9%) BUT I enjoyed it and found it fast paced and entertaining like the first two. I am STILL amazed that Liam Neeson can do the "action" scenes he can at age 63

plays again on HBO-E Friday the 13th @ 9:30am & 8:50pm, Saturday the 14th HBO-E @ 2:10pm & HBO-W @ 5:10pm, and Monday the 16th on HBO-E @ 4:10pm & HBO-W @ 7:10pm. rate it like the last two    of four

the first two have played pretty regular on various premium channels. BOTH excellent "you should NOT have messed with ME" action movies. Liam Neeson and the rest of the cast are excellent

Mr Holmes (2015) used a Dish-TV PPV certificate because Ian McKellen played an aged Holmes trying to "solve his last case" from his younger days and it was a waste. really was NO mystery in the plot which as more the interaction between him, his housekeeper and her young son. a very slow, plodding movie from the start that I kept hoping would speed up but never did. if I want to see an old geezer fighting senility, I will just look in the mirror. can NOT believe Rotten Tomatoes with a 87% "fresh" rating. Miracle

Miracle a great inspirational "feel good" movie

John Grisham's The Rainmaker (1997) after Nell Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) staring Gregory Peck and The Verdict (1982) staring Paul Neuman, it is in my opinion THE best courtroom drama on film. GREAT cast staring Matt Damon and Danny DeVito with Jon Voight, Roy Scheider, Mickey Rourke, Claire Danes and Virginia Madsen. relatively unknown actors Johnny Whitworth as the dying Donny Ray Black and Mary Kay Place as his mother Dot are outstanding as is Teresa Wright as "Miss Birdie" Birdsong as Rudy's (Damon's character) land lady. you will want to go shoot any health insurance executive or lawyer you see after this film. plays again on 5-Max channel again Sunday November 22nd @ 12:20pm pacific time. I obviously rate it of four. it is a movie I can NOT pass up watching every time it is on it is THAT good

as mentioned (for some reason) in the "Bad Movies You Watch" thread, Sleepers (1996) another of four crime-courtroom drama with an outstanding cast starting Jason Patric, Brad Pitt, Minnie Driver, Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. relatively unknown Billy Crudup and Ron Eldard are excellent as the "Westies" gangsters Tommy Marcano and John Reilly as are Vittorio Gassman as the old Mafia Don King Benny and the late Bruno Kirby as "Shakes" (Patric's characters) father. the children that play the young "crew" also excellent. like The Rainmaker a "must see" IF you enjoy good courtroom drama

I just bought The Rainmaker on DVD and it's a good movie.  I would give it 3/4 dogbones.

speaking of great courtroom dramas, Inherit the Wind (1960) plays Friday November 20th @ 12:05 am (just past Midnight Thursday) on the MGM Movie channel. fictionalizes the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial and was a shot at 1950's McCarthyism. was a re "tour de force" for both Spencer Tracy as defense lawyer Henry Drummond (who was patterned after "Monkey Trial" defense lawyer Clarence Darrow) and Fredric March as proecuter Matthew Harrison Brady (who was patterned after "Monkey Trial" prosecuter William Jennings Bryan).

also stars Gene Kelly as a Baltimore Herald reporter covering the trial (patterned after Henry L. Mencken), person York as the teacher on trial for teaching evolution (patterned after the real John Scopes), Harry Morgan as the judge, Claude Akins as a "fire and brimstone" preacher, Donna Anderson as York's characters girl friend with Noah Beery Jr and early work by Norman Fell. the movie received four Academy Award nominations including Best Actor for Spencer Tracy (lost to Burt Lancaster as Elmer Gantry) and has a 90% "fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes. definitely worth seeing at least once I rate it    of four

watched Ship of Fools (1965) last night on Turner Classic Movies. another excellent drama about the passengers on a German ship traveling from Mexico to Germany in 1933 it has an all star cast including Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, Jose Ferrer, Oskar Werner, Elizabeth Ashley, George Segal, Jose Greco, the lovely Barbara Luna & Gila Golan and Werner "Col Klink" Klemperer.

had eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actors for Oskar Werner and Best Actress for Simone Signoret BUT the dwarf Michael Dunn as Carl Glocken, Lee Marvin as the washed up American baseball player Bill Tenny and Heinz Ruhmann as the J*ew Lowenthal really steal the movie with their interaction

Lowenthal to Glocken discurring how the J*ews of Germany are more German than J*ewish and that Hitler is a passing fancy. final line. "there are a million J*ews in Germany. what are they going to do? kill all of us?" (YIKES)

Bill Tenny crying the Glocken how not being able to hit the sinking curve ball cost him his career. at the end Glocken replies "you know mr Tenny, there must be millions of people that do not even know WHAT a sinking curveball is"

definitely a movie worth watching at least once. I rate it    of four

The Equalizer (2014) an OUTSTANDING Denzel Washington action movie. the Russian mobster villains are REALLY nasty and it's fun to watch Denzel as Bob McCall "John Wayne" them

The Elephant Man (1980)  biographical film about 19th century British severely deformed "side show freek" Joseph "John" Merrick who became somewhat of a society celebrate after being rescued from exploitation by a carnival by Dr Frederick Treves. outstanding cast with John Hurt as John Merrick, Anthony Hopkins as Dr Frederick Treves, Anne Bancroft actress and theater owner as Madge Kendal, a patron of John's, and Sir John Gielgud as Francis Carr-Gomm the London Hospital's Governor. character actor Freddie Jones is excellent as Mr. Bytes, John's "keeper" at the carnival. overall a well acted serious drama worth watching.

The War of the Worlds (1953) good early adaptation of the H. G. Wells novel by Hollywood it stars Gene Barry as the scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester and is narrated by Sir Cedric Hardwicke. had outstanding special effects for a 1950's film and was one of the few SciFi's back then shot in technicolor. runs a relatively short 85 minutes and is worth viewing for early SciFi fans. I personally think it is still a more straight forward telling of the story than some of the later adaptations like the Steven Spielberg's staring Tom Cruise 2005 version. played on Encore during their "SciFi November" and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it   of four

Wild Card (2015) action movie staring Jason Statham set in Las Vegas it is remake of the 1986 movie Heat that starred Burt Reynolds. NOT one of Jason's best because there are only three real Statham style fight scenes in the movie and it's rather slow paced compared to most movies he has been in. has some elements of the recent The Gambler remake. I think it IS worth a look though esp for Sofía Vergara as Doris (listed as "DD" in the credits for obvious reasons) in the opening scene. WOW what a SET!!!. runs a short 90 minutes. plays again on EPIX1 Monday November 30th @12:10am pacifis time. I rate it   of four

Agreed dogs  The Equalizer was one of my favorite movies of 2014 along with Keanu Reeves action flick John Wick. Marton Csokas was a bad a$$ in that movie!

John Wick an EXCELLENT pretty much non-stop action "revenge" movie. maybe Keanu Reeves best ever

Blackhat (2015) computer hacker plot based action thriller staring Chris "Thor" Hemsworth and the lovely Chinese actress Tang Wei. pretty much a ridiculous plot with Hemsworth as a computer nerd who can still kick azz when threatened it has some decent action scenes BUT overall I thought was rather "plodding" and the whole plot primes is just stupid. plays again on Cinemax channels again Friday November 27, Saturday November 28th and Monday November 30th.
