Flubber (1997) watched this remake of the Fred MacMurray classic The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) with Robin Williams in the Professor Brainard role. VERY funny "sight gags" wise crack lines from Williams throughout. had good CGI with the "Flubber" scenes. the character of the "flying robot" and "best friend" to Professor Brainard "Weebo" is way cute. overall was a VERY funny movie that only runs just over 90 minutes, worth watching IF you want a good laugh.
Hindenburg: The Last Flight (2013) ENCORE two part movie filmed in Germany about the Hindenburg disaster with a lot of back ground "political intrigue". drags in spots but interesting ending after the crash and excellent CGI. worth watching IF you like 1930's "period pieces"
Infamous (2006) story of Truman Capote writing "In Cold Blood" with Toby Jones as Capote and "pre-Bond" Daniel Craig as the murderer Perry Smith. I though it was a better "telling of the tale" than the 2005 movie "Capote" for which Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote won the Best Actor Oscar. have seen both movies thought that Jones captured Capote's mannerisms and frailties better than Hoffman. think that IF Infamous had been released first, Jones would have won the Oscar. excellent acting in this drama by ALL involved

Prometheus (2012). the the overhyped Ridley Scott "prequel" to Alien is finally on HBO. watched last night just to remind myself how PI$$ED I was to waste money seeing this in a theater AND to see IF they had done a "redux" by adding cut scenes that would make it less "choppy". it's OK SciFi with excellent CGI special affects BUT most fans of the Alien movies, including myself, were disappointed. just doesn't have the suspense and "startle" of "Alien" or the action of "Aliens"
it's on HBO channels about every day the week of April 7th.

The Hurricane (1999) this biography of Rubin "Hurricane' Carter is one of the the BEST acted movies I have seen in YEARS with Denzel Washington playing the title role. a bit long @ 2 hours 25 minutes BUT Washington probably would not have been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and won the Golden Globe without the somewhat lengthy scenes of him having "self doubts" early on in the movie.
REALLY well acted by all involved esp "unknown" actor Vicellous Reon Shannon as Lesra Martin, who becomes a "surrogate son" to Carter, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber and John Hannah as the three Canadians that were able to uncover the evidence that finally proved Carter's innocence and Dan Hedaya as Detective Della Pesca who phonied up the evidence in the original trial. check out Vincent Pastore (later in The Sopranos) in an early career bit part as a small time crook that perjured himself against Carter and the late Rod Steiger, in one of his last movies, as the Federal Judge that finally sets Carter free after almost 20 years in prison.
it's on HBO Signature channel again Friday April 12th @ 2:30 pm and Sunday April 14th @ 11:15 am (both times pacific). definate and definate watch or, better yet, record because I think it's worth watching multipul times.

Vamps, Cute comedy horror about modern day girlie vampires in NY, interesting twist on the genre, if you're looking for something different, this is it.
Men In Black 3 - long time since the last sequel and throws in the time travel angle, novelty factor of weird aliens and great weapons has worn off now but this kept my interest, should be the last movie in the genre though.

actually thought MIB-3 was the BEST of the series. liked the "time travel" aspect and NASA tie in. thought "Boris" was the best villian ever. scene where Agent J (Will Smith), finds out his father, who he thought had abandoned him when he was a kid, was actually a hero in the past is excellent. could have had more of the "worms", though. they are always good for laughs

Kingdom of Heaven (2005) normally I'm not a big Orlando Bloom fan but he's pretty good in this 12th century Crusades era action drama. also stars Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson. Syrian actor Ghassan Massoud is excellent as Saladin as is Sudanese-English actor Alexander Siddig as Imad ad-Din, Saladin's Chancellor.
plenty of blood, guts and gore action in the fights and battle scenes esp the ending with the Siege of Jerusalem. worth watching IF you like historical "epic" action movies. The film is a somewhat fictionalised portrayal of the true life history of Bloom's character, Balian of Ibelin

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1988) made for TV movie of the courtroom scenes from the two-act play by Herman Wouk, which he adapted from his novel.
stars Brad Davis as Captain LtCdr Queeg, Jeff Daniels as Lt Maryk, Kevin J. O'Connor as the weaselie Lt Keefer and Eric Bogosian as defense council Lt. Barney Greenwald.
definately NOT up to the standards of the 1954 movie The Caine Mutiny with Humphrey Bogart as Queeg, Van Johnson as Maryk, Fred MacMurray as Keefer and Jose Ferrer as Greenwald but IS pretty well acted esp by Bogosian. Peter Gallagher and Ken Michels who play the Navy psychiatrists Dr Forrest Lundeen and Dr Allen Bird, that certified Queeg as "sane", are excellent. somewhat funny scene with Greenwald questioning Dr Bird and Bird has the same style of "nervous tics" as Queeg.
IF you like courtroom drama this is "OK" BUT IF you have seen Bogie do Queeg, you will probably be bored with Brad Davis. I do think the psychiatrists scenes are actually BETTER than the 1954 movie esp Dr Bird. "page thru" to those

speaking of The Caine Mutiny (1954) with Humphrey Bogart as Captain Queeg. here is the court-martial scene where Queeg has a "metldown". "Bogie" had some great scenes in great movies, esp "Casablnca", BUT I think this is his BEST acted scene EVER.
also threw in Jose Ferrer as defense council Barney Greenwald confronting Fred MacMurray as Lt Keefer and the Officers of the Caine at their "Victory Party"

two excellent "Cold War" movies coming up on Sony Movie Channel.
Fail Safe (1964) with Henry Fonda as the President, Dan O'Herlihy as the "dove" AF General "Blackie" Black, Walter Matthau the "hawk" Professor Groeteschele, Ed Binns as "Vindicator" bomber (actually B-58 supersonic "Hustler aircraft) Colonel Jack Grady and Frank Overton as SAC headquarters commander General Bogan. early film work by Fritz Weaver as SAC headquarters Colonel Cascio, Bogan's aid, Dom DeLuise as a SAC electronics tech, and Larry Hagman as the President's interpreter. I remember this movie SCARED the HELL out of everyone back in the 1960's coming when it did right after the Cuban Missile Crisis and people were worried about an "accidental war" with the Soviets. VERY well acted movie esp by Matthau in a serious dramatic roll.
it plays Monday April 15th, Wednesday April 17th and April 22nd, 25th and 30th
The Beast (aka:The Beast of War) (1988) back when the Russian were in Afghanistan and the Taliban were our "Mujahideen Allies", this movie was made about a Soviet tank that gets lost and tries to fight it's way back to their lines. stars George Dzundza as Russian tank commander and veteran of "The Great Patriotic War" Daskal, Erick Avari as Afghan communist tank crewman Samad, Jason Patric as pacifist tank driver Koverchenko, Steven Bauer as Taj the Mujahideen leader and VERY tasty Israeli actress Shoshi Marciano as Taj's sister Sherina. overall a well acted war movie with a compelling plot BUT funny how times change. talk about your "unintended consequences" helping the Afghans when they were invaded.
it plays Thursday April 25th and Saturday April 27th

There were at least 4 Alien sequals made after the original but RidleyScott never was involved and this film has really little to do with Alien. The orginal Alien created a new standard for a genre but obviously Scott didn't want to rework old ground and didn't script for chest-bursts or ambushs. You were pissed because he didn't remake Alien? When has Ridley Scott made a sequel? He made a genre standard shift with Alien and now he's made a different movie and if you stayed until the end has the look of something that might lead to a sequel.

Prometheus (2012). is decent SciFi and does have excellent CGI. it's just that the "it's a prequel to Alien" hype threw a lot of people off. they cut a LOT from the filming and I think it will be better IF and WHEN Ridley Scott does the "redux" like Coppola with Apocalypse Now.
speaking of "sequel" there is already talk BUT they don't know "what direction to take". one scenario I have heard is Shaw goes to the "Engineers" home planet with a repaired David and attacks them with their own "black oil" bio-weapon which causes them to morph into the chest-buster "Alien" creature. either that OR a rescue party come to moon LV-223 lookin for the Prometheus and the Alien creature that popped out the Engineer at the movie's ending has evolved into the H. R. Giger Alien design and "hitches a ride".

Was RidleyScott pissed that he didn't get in on the Alien francise that really spawned 6 movies/sequels if you include AvP movies. If Prometheus didn't end with the look of a movie to be continued I've never seen one.
Personally Ridley Scott can not make a bad movie..

watched Prometheus a couple more times on HBO and I think you guys are correct. have to watch it more than once to appreciate it. has some "nuance" to it you really don't pick up on first time around BUT still maintain NOT as good as the original Alien OR Aliens. will bet they release a "redux" sometime in the future.

Cleaner (2007) very well acted murder mystery drama with Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris, Eva Mendes and Luis Guzman. there is NO "filler" in this one as it only runs 88 minutes. has a LOT of "plot twists" and had a element of the Brad Pitt - Morgan Freeman movie Se7en (1995) with the cinematography and "blood & guts".
NOT for the squeamish. it's on the Sony Movie channel again Monday morning @ 2:00 am pacific time. worth recording IF you like movies similar to Se7en.
