Ike: Countdown to D-Day (2004) made for TV movie about the difficult decisions he had to make leading to up to the D-Day invasion. very well acted by Tom Selleck as "Ike" who I think captures his nature and mannerisms better than any actor I have seen. goes into the difficulty dealing with "big egos" like General George S. Patton (Gerald McRaney), British General Bernard Montgomery (Bruce Phillips) and Free French General Charles De Gaulle (George Shevtsov). it was a real political battle to "keep them all on the same page". also his relationship with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Ian Mune) and his own Chief of Staff General "Bedell" Smith (Timothy Bottoms).
relatively short movie @ 89 minutes. was on the Sony Movie channel and I rate it of three. hopefully they will play it again soon. shows just what "a close run thing" the lead up to D-Day was esp the last 48 hours.

Rodan (1956). one of the first Japanese SciFi-horror monster movies along with Godzilla (1954). the movie is SO bad and SO "campy" that it's actually funny. I can't believe that my friends and I actually stood in line for over 3 hours to see this back in the 1950's. surprisingly enough, this movie printed money in the US back then. plays on EPIX1 again Friday Sept 13th @ 3:00 am pacific IF you want to record. runs just 82 minutes. real BUT worth watching just to check out the "genre" and for laughs. definite candidate for a Mystery Science Theater 3000 showing.

Night Watch is a Russian movie, first of a trilogy. Story between good and evil and a little boy who helps shift the fate of the world. It has vampires, shape shifters etc. Great great movie. If subtitles don't bother you will enjoy this film.

watched two of last years Oscar movies last night. Argo premiered on HBO while Zero Dark Thirty was on Starz.
after seeing Steven Spielberg's movie Lincoln in a theater, couldn't understand WHY it didn't win the Best Picture Oscar. after seeing Argo, now I know. even with it being a "known story" it is VERY fast paced and suspenseful movie. never realized that the title was from the phony "movie" used as the cover for the escape operation. was a VERY "close run thing".
VERY well acted by Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman. also the "look alike" actors that played the six escapees and Victor Garber in the "look alike" roll of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor. it's amazing how they found actors that were almost exact "body doubles" for the real people involved.
for it's fault of supposedly NOT giving the Canadians enough credit for the escape, it's still a GREAT movie that DID deserve the Best Picture Oscar. can NOT believe that Affleck got stiffed by the Oscars for Best Director NOT even being nominated. he DID win just about every other Best Director last year including the Golden Globe. it plays on HBO most all of next week Sunday Sept 8th, Tuesday Sept 10th, Thursday Sept 12th and again Sunday Sept 15th. definite
Zero Dark Thirty about the CIA operations that eventually lead to the elimination of Osama bin Laden was another of last years Oscar nominees and I also thought it was excellent IF a bit long @ almost 2 hours 40 minutes. it is told thru the eyes of woman CIA operative Maya played by Jessica Chastain who was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar and probably should have won.
the movie got some "political correct" flak about the "enhanced interrogation" scenes which seemed to take up the first quarter of the movie BUT they "set the stage" and somewhat explain how the CIA eventually finally identified and found Osama bin Laden courier Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti. also goes into some of the CIA "ops gone wrong" like the 2009 Camp Chapman suicide bombing which killed 7 CIA officers, including a good woman friend of Maya's, and wounded 6 others. the last quarter of the movie is the SEAL Team "Neptune Spear" operation itself.
the middle is mostly the "detective work" to identify al-Kuwaiti and actually find bin Laden's hide out and I thought it was the most interesting part of the movie. the character of Maya is an absolutely obsessed tigress in first resurrecting the hunt for bin Laden and then demanding the assets to carry it out. overall, as I said, an excellent "action-detective" movie well worth watching BUT a bit long. think the "enhanced interrogation" scenes could have "made the point" in less time.
WAS kind of sad to see the late James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) as the CIA Director in one of his last major movie rolls. plays on Starz again neext week Sunday Sept 8th, Monday Sept 9th, Tuesday Sept 10th, Thursday Sept 12th and again Sunday Sept 15th. also definate

Both Argo and Zero Dark Thirty were good, but imo are the kind of movies that once you've seen them you've seen them.
I like to watch a "top rated movie" at least twice just to see anything I may have missed in the plot. LOT of funny lines in Argo from both Alan Arkin as producer Lester Siegel and John Goodman as prosthetic makeup expert John Chambers
as for Zero Dark Thirty, it is VERY well acted by Jessica Chastain BUT there have been some "made for TV" movies like the National Geographic Channel's Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden which played back in September of 2012 that probably covered the subject as good

The Beast (1988) aka The Beast of War. war action drama set during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. the Soviet tank commander Daskal played by George Dzundza is a pretty good "arrogant azz" of a villain as is Jason Patric as the tank driver Koverchenko who goes against Daskal eventually joining the Mujahadeen. Steven Bauer plays the Afghan tribal leader Khan Taj who is out to destroy the tank while VERY tasty Israeli actress Shoshi Marciano play's Taj's sister Sherina. I'm surprised I haven't seen her in more movies
back then the Afghan Mujahadeen were our "allies" (like in the 2007 Charlie Wilson's War) and the film makes them "the good guys". funny how the "unintended consequences" of helping some third world sand people during the Cold War came back to bite us as the "Muja's" have now morphed into the Taliban and are now killing Americans instead of Russians. I take BOTH movies as a warning about "getting involved in foreign adventures"
plays again on the Sony Movie channel Thursday Sept 12th @ 5:05 pm, Saturday Sept 14th @ 5:00 am and Wednesday Sept 18th @ 2:25 am pacific time. runs just under 2 hours. overall a pretty well acted war drama and I rate it
Donnie Brasco (1997) just happened to catch one of my all time favorite "mob movies" last night on the Encore movie channel. I know most Covers members have seen it BUT thought you might like to re-view again. all star cast of Johnny Depp as Donnie Brasco (FBI agent Joseph Pistone), Al Pacino as "Lefty", Michael Madsen as "Sonny Black", the late Bruno Kirby as Nicky and Anne Heche as Joe Pistone's wife Maggie.
don't really have to tell you the plot as you probably have seen the movie numerous times. it's on Encore-Drama channel again Wednesday Sept 11th @ 10:50 pm, Thursday Sept 13th @ 2:50 am, Sunday Sept 15th @ 9:25 pm and Monday Sept 16th @ 9:10 am & 5:00 pm pacific time. hopefully it is NOT in 4X3 "skinny scope". one of Depp's best early movies and definite

I'm not sure why this mobster movie is so obscure. It is pretty dang good. It's got Bruce Willis, Dustin Hoffman, and Nicole Kidman. There is pretty good action. Nicole Kidman gets naked a decent amount. I recommend it if you can find it. I watched in on Youtube so you could probably find it there.
The Triangle-
I watched this on Youtube too. It was a Bermuda Triangle type time travel movie. It kinda of sucked but is worth a watch if you like that sort of genre.

Billy Bathgate (1991) thought Steven Hill (who played District Attorney Adam Schiff on Law & Order 1990 thru 2000) as Otto was GREAT in this movie. Schiff is one of my all time fav TV rolls
Star Trek - Into Darkness (2013) when I first heard that they were going to re-make Star Trek movies with younger versions of the original cast of Kirk, Spock, Dr McCoy, Scotty, Sulu and Uhura I said "Ya, Right. THAT Ain't Gonna Work" BUT the 2009 Star Trek with Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr McCoy, Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho (Harold in "Harold & Kumar" films) as Sulu worked out GREAT and Zoe Saldana is even MORE luscious than the original Uhura, Nichelle Nichols
this one Into Darkness is THE BEST SciFi action movie I have seen in decades. non-stop action and GREAT CGI coupled with a plot that is somewhat of a "throw back" to the second ever Star Trek movie the 1982 The Wrath of Khan. without being a "spoiler", let me just say that Benedict Cumberbatch (PBS Sherlock Holmes) as Khan Noonien Singh (aka Commander Harrison) is even a better villain than the original played by Ricardo Montalban. Alice Eve, as new character Dr. Carol Marcus, is VERY tasty. watched with my comp pay-per-view from Dish-TV and I definately recommend it NOT just for Star Trek fans but for action fans in general. get it on pay-per-view IF it's on your network OR thru netfix IF you haven't seen it yet. NO "filler" in THIS one
have a couple of free PPV's this month and thinking about viewing the "crime caper" movie Now You See Me tomarrow.

I watched about 30 mins. of Les Miserable. To boring for words. I like Broadway shows sometimes but this was bad. Visually great but not entertaining for me. Liam Neeson did a better job in that non singing version. Well, at least I sat through it.
Le Rat, Let me ask you a question. There is a golf course locally offering a discount on fees and carts between 9 and 11 on 9-11. There is a restaurant offering free coffee and muffins between 9 and 11 on 9-11. Have we got to this point so quickly?

just from the trailers I have seen of Les Miserable I would rather watch my DVD's of the Met Opera doing Wagner's Ring Cycle back in the late 1980's. the Das Rheingold was esp good and an excellent intro to Wagner opera because it is relatively short, has pretty constant action AND doesn't have a bunch of "cats tail pulling" soprano arias
as for those discounts, I haven't played golf for decades so don't know. sorry

I did see "Brazil" a few days ago. Funny bits but not really enough to keep me interested for the most part. Probably a little out dated.
I think "Argo" was a good movie but I ruined for myself by watching the Doc with Tony Mendez and the hostages who were involved. Don't remember the channel but I bet you've seen it. Nice movie and impressed that Afflect pulled this off. For a long time now it seems that his buddy, Damon, was running off and leaving him in the dust with good roles in good movies and Affleck was making bomb after bomb.
I have "Zero Dark Thirty" tivo'ed up and really ready for this. Problem is that I've seen the Doc with the real CIA women who pulled this off and though some names aren't named they tell a compelling story. The story the male CIA agents who were on the ground is incredible. I think this movie will be fine although I know some inside info.

Just watched Star Trek Into Darkness. Awesome movie with a twist ending. I will have to watch it again.
agreed. like I said, BEST SciFi action movie I have seen in decades. Benedict Cumberbatch definitely THE villain of the story as Khan BUT Peter Weller as Fleet Admiral Marcus is a pretty nasty bugger too

DID watch Now You See Me (2013) with another free PPV and WOW!!! it is a MOST excellent crime caper thriller movie about a crew of illusionists using "magic" to pull off major thefts. excellent cast with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco as "The Four Horsemen" illusionists along with Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent and French actress Melanie Laurent as an Interpol agent pair trying to catch them. also Morgan Freeman as former magician who makes his living exposing others tricks and Michael Caine as the Four Horseman's rich backer.
with the 50% Rotten Tomatoes rating I didn't expect a lot. just goes to show you can't go by critics. VERY fast moving movie with excellent action and numerous "plot twists" to keep your mind working. the capers are fun and the "how did they REALLY do it" is even better. has a GREAT fight and car chase thru New York City in the middle. HUGE "out of the blue" plot twist at the end
definitely worth the money getting on PPV or Netflix. runs just under two hours. the movie's wikipage says there is a sequel coming and I will be looking forward to it because THIS movie was THAT fast paced and the cast that good.
would be interested to hear comment from others that have viewed it. I enjoyed it every bit as much as Star Trek - Into Darkness and THAT is saying something

rewatched Jodie Foster's "vigilante" movie The Brave One (2007) on Cinemax. I think her character of radio talk show host Erica Bain who starts "taking out the trash" after she is raped and her fiance murdered in New York's Central Park is her third BEST roll EVER after rape victim Sarah Tobias in The Accused (1988) (Best Actress Oscar) and FBI trainee Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) (also Best Actress Oscar). plays on Cinemax-Action again Wednesday Sept 18th @ 7:15 pm and Cinemax-5 Star Friday Sept 20th @ 8:30 am. (all times pacific)
also watched the WWII era A Soldier's Story (1984) on Movieplex. VERY well acted Best Picture Oscar nominated mystery drama about the murder of a hated black sergeant, played by Adolph Caesar (Best Supporting Actor nomination) that shows the problems black soldiers had in the "Jim Crow" Army of that time. VERY well acted by the mostly black cast of Caesar as Sgt Waters, Howard Rollins, Jr. as black Capt. Davenport, the investigating officer, and Art Evans, David Alan Grier, David Harris, Larry Riley and a young Denzel Washington as Water's platoon/baseball team. it plays on Movieplex again Sunday Sept 15th @ 8:20 am and Monday Sept 16th @ 1:10 am. also shows on Encore-Suspense channel Tuesday Sept 17th @ 5:25 am and Friday Sept 20th @ 4:35 am (all times pacific)
the VA Hospital themed movie Article 99 (1992)which I reviewed last month (1992) plays again on Cinemax-5 Star again Wednesday Sept 18th @ 2:10 am pacific time. early work by Kiefer Sutherland, Ray Liotta, Forest Whitaker and John C. McGinley as doctors trying to "fight the system" to get their patients treated with Eli Wallach as an old WWII vet and Keith David (played Private King in Platoon) as a wheel chair bound Vietnam vet at the hospital. it alternates between being VERY funny and VERY much "pizzing you off" at the treatment of Vets by the VA "system".

just happened to watch Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) with Bill Murray as Franklin D. Roosevelt and wasn't what I expected at all after seeing the trailers. the part about England's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth played by Samuel West and Olivia Colman was somewhat interesting BUT overall the movie was just a "soap opera" about FDR's relationship with Margaret "Daisy" Suckley played by Laura Linney.
ran only 95 minutes and seemed like 3 hours it was SO slow. Murray's performance as Roosevelt did get some critical praise and he received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor BUT for the life of me, I can NOT understand why. West did bring some life with his portrayal of "Bertie" (King George) BUT overall a VERY boring stinker of a movie. also I'm sure the Windsor family would be insulted the way Colman portrayed the Queen as a snooty witch and a nag. sure glad I didn't spend any money to see it

West did bring some life with his portrayal of "Bertie" (King George) BUT overall a VERY boring stinker of a movie. also I'm sure the Windsor family would be insulted the way Colman portrayed the Queen as a snooty witch and a nag. sure glad I didn't spend any money to see it
watched the 1996 SciFi-Comedy Mars Attacks! last night on HBO. VERY funny "send up" of "alien invasion" movies with an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, and Danny DeVito, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Short, Natalie Portman, Rod Steiger (in one of his last movies), Michael J. Fox, Joe Don Baker, Jack Black (in one of his first movies), Jim Brown and Pam Grier (who put the "Fox" in both the 1974 Foxy Brown and Quentin Tarantino's 1997 Jackie Brown). it's a fun hour and 45 minutes of non-stop action and laughs. using Slim Whitman's version of "Indian Love Call" to make the Martians heads explode is hilarious (also works for chasing hip-hop kids out of a 7-11 along with ANY female soprano "cat's tail pulling" opera aria)

watched the 2004 production of The Merchant of Venice last night on HBO-Signature with Al Pacino as Shylock, Jeremy Irons as Antonio, Joseph Fiennes as Bassanio and the lovely Lynn Collins as Portia. one of the BEST adaptations of Shakespeare's play that I have ever seen and a real "tour de force" for Pacino who captures Shylock at his villainous yet tragic best. Collins is fantastic as Balthazar (Portia in disguise) the "young doctor of the law" in the courtroom scene. the scenes of the three suitors choosing one of the three boxes to win Portia's hand in marriage are hilarious.

This is dated but still a good 3-part made for TV horror series. Karen Black stars in all ...... RIP Karen Black. She does a nice job. The stories have good sinister elements.
Trilogy of Terror II (1996)- Same thing. They made a second part with the Zuni Fetish Doll. It is awesome. The other two are okay but a little cheesy.
The Zuni Fetish Doll pieces are EXCELLENT. That little dude is awesome.
Probably gonna go see Insidious 2 tomorrow.
