Bruce Willis and Humphrey Bogart would be my top guesses. Maybe a Jack Nicholson high up there to...anyone else?
of the "moderns" I think three of the four mentioned, DiCaprio, Ford, Nicholson are excellent selections and I would add "this generations Jimmy Stewart", Tom Hanks.
as for "greatest generation", the best were Marlon Brando, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart. IF I had to pick one for "box office", which is the true Hollywood test of a "movie star", I would say have to say John Wayne (although Jimmy Stewart is my personal fav)

Really? Nobody has mentioned.......Deniro and Pacino .....30+ years and still goin.....
I think that's just a "given". Brad Pitt recently and Anthony Hopkins also. how do you NOT pick AFI's "the greatest villian of all time", Dr Hannibal Lecter?
I think in the "Greatest Generaton" group we also need to add Sir Laurence Olivier. just his Shakespeare movies, like the 1955 Richard III, would probaly get him on any "best" list BUT he adds to that with films like Marathon Man as Dr. Christian Szell (#34 AFI villian) and The Boys from Brazil as Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman (based on Simon Wiesenthal). 60 + years of Theater, Movies and Television for this great actor who could play ANY part. many Brits will say he's the "Greatest of All Time"

was wathing "The Sunshine Boys" last night and realised we have also forgotten two other greatest comedy actors of the 2nd half of the 20th Century, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. know mostly for comedy's they did together, they were also great in serious drama rolls.

What about...
Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman. I cannot honestly remember a film in which either turned in a poor performance. Also Runaway Jury was a fun with the two of them together.

Daniel Day Lewis, Morgan Freeman, and Clint Eastwood have turned in some incredible performances too. Could also throw in Mel Gibson and/or Russel Crow but not so much great acting as just fun movies.

Jimmy Stewart is my favorite also....
my fav Jimmy Stewart movie is "The Spirit of St Louis". I know there are oodles of his movies more popular esp "It's A Wonderful Life" BUT, after "The Right Stuff", It's my favorite aviation theme movie EVER.

btw, "The Spirit of St Louis" screens on TCM Friday, May 20th in a Jimmy Stewart marathon.
