as for "greatest generation", the best were Marlon Brando, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart. IF I had to pick one for "box office", which is the true Hollywood test of a "movie star", I would say have to say John Wayne (although Jimmy Stewart is my personal fav)

if that is the case then, as much as i would hate to say it, Will Smith would definitely be in the top 5 in hollywood right now. His movies i think have consistently been huge huge successes like Independence day, men in black movies, bad boys.. he consistently puts out hit after hit..

Johnny Depp is another guy that has mad box office success..

We arent talking about the best actors here, he was asking who is the biggest star in hollywood...  Box office success probably has to be the number 1 qualification..

in that case I would agree with Will Smith and Johnny Depp (although the latter IS a great actor that can play ANY role) along with Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and "greatest generation" John Wayne for box office success. all are, or in the case of John Wayne, were

Burt Reynolds his 70's movies were box office gold

Sylvester Stallone his 80's films

Wow...this denigrated to b-stars becoming somewhat big a-stars,very fast!! (sean penn??? lmao)

just for reference...AFI has Bogart as the #1 male actor of all time. You may have not seen his movies but you know his character, u know when someone his spoofing him!!! Not only is he very popular him films have made alot of money to go along with it (in ways sean connery or pacino cannot touch!)
