Why does everyone like music about dungeons and dragons (tool)?  THey're pretty happy to me, hoping everyone "learns to swim" and the world is consumed by a tsunami...dumbass white boys

So many good bands from the 90's you guys have already hit on.

Tool for me is tops..  

Foo Fighters might be more late 90's , but seems to be one of the few carrying the torch of Rock n' Roll / Alternative right now.

  Avenged Sevenfold, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Volbeat, and Buckethead are doing fine carrying the torch, with or without the Foo Fighters.

Dave Grohl is a PHENOMONAL musician, but the Foo Fighters just don't do it for me.  And Grohl nauseates me when he thinks he has to scream in almost every song.

 Undertow and AEnima are excellent albums.  Their stuff after that did not do much for me.

All of those mentioned are worthy bands... but I will go with the numbers.

When Nevermind came out, it turned the entire rock genre on its collective head.  It was groundbreaking and I loved it.  Like all of the truly greats in history, the party was short lived.

Nevermind gets waaay too much credit.

Janes Addiction, NIN, RHCP, and a bunch of other bands that I'm not thinking of, had already broken the ground, there had already been a changing of the guard.

I mean even 'Bleach' and Soundgarden's 'Louder than love' were already pretty well known by 91'.

Nevermind was just the first to go massively mainstream.

I agree.. their later work including Lateralus took more time to grown on me , but is a fine album.  I'd give it another try.   Daney Carey on drums takes to another level on this one.  Tool has a great sound all their own.

I don't disagree with you at all... but there inlies the point.

Those other bands may have broken the ground, but Nirvana changed everything.  They got through and imploded an entire era of rock and started a new one.  Others get footnote credit for being there and ready, but none of their record sales or radio play changed significantly until Nevermind hit the scene.  It was a tidal wave, if you lived it you know it.  If you are too young, you don't know.

Other great american rockers were doing there thing before Elvis, but he is the man that made it what it was.  Many other British bands were penetrating the USA before the Beatles, but they are the ones that did that.  Many other metal influences were making insane sounds out of Britain before we heard Black Sabbath, but they are the ones that made it badass and got through.  etc etc etc... it happens in every shift of rock and roll genres as things move along.

Nirana's Nevermind did exactly that to the industry in the early 90's.  By far the most influential album and band of the 90's - hands down.  No I don't like that the band's lead man was a douchebag, that seemed to have a rough time being poor, or rich, unknown, or famous.  He was just a weird guy no doubt.  But the best of art is full of fool.  Major props to Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Jerry Cantrell, and tons of others that managed to stay alive and keep the music going.  But no doubt in my mind that Nirvana was the most influential band of rock in the 90's
