I do the following..
Break down starting five comparisons by position. Then assess how much of an advantage said team will have.
Compare pace of both teams.
Compare defensive styles.
Compare coaching styles.
Examine role players off the bench.
Home/Away records.
——————-
Things i dont do -
Revenge angle
I dont take in consideration statistics beyond that season. Unless its a staggering statistic like the Warriors not winning in San Antonio for 15 seasons or whatever it was.
Bet against super hot teams.
Bet for super cold teams.
Bet Unders in the NBA because literally everyone can score at a very high rate. (I rarely bet totals and usually do it live so i can see the pace of the game)
———-
Things i started this season -
Not betting on my favorite team because i bet with emotion.

Study the game. Work at it.
"I've been looking so long for a system". If a profitable system was justing hanging out on google then everyone would be rich. The best cappers on here have likely failed for years before they became who they are today.
Sorry man, but with that mentality I don't think you should be betting your money at all.

This! Covers offers King of Covers contest. You can track the leader for the season, and weekly results. Start with fake money, and use differing Unit plays...I.E. 100 - 1 unit, 500 - 5 units, etc...while you develop/alter your strategy.
Another is ESPN's, Streak Survivor, it's nice to see where the 95%+ plays are and evaluate there, it narrows the games immediately. I started by playing one game a day, and had far better results than playing 10 per day...still do as a matter of fact.
Follow the Forums and jot down names of those players posting often. I used to track each poster via Excel and watched for certain trends, i.e. is someone really good betting on/against one specific team, their unit size W/L results, etc...
There isn't a one size fits all system. I for one, don't like basketball (from MN and prefer Hockey), so anytime I bet it's usually degen action, or tailing someone who is super hot...by myself I'm likely to hit at about 33% but I'll use like 0.10 unit...tailing maybe 0.25-0.50 units just for the degen action.
Set tight unit limits, before the day set a limit of games/units you're playing, don't reach, don't chase.
Hope this helps.

How do you analyze the coaching style? Do you use any stats? What about defensive styles?

Thanks for the reply. It seems that this information is mostly obtained from watching games and reading articles from analysts. You can probably do this for a few popular teams but what about other teams? In this way it would take a lot of effort to get such information on even half of the teams. But not every matchup is between teams that have been followed closely. Most of the time there is only one such team in a matchup. Then how do you get a good assessment on the teams that were not closely followed?

Just wondering, how much time does it take for you to follow those teams?

No one with a good proven system will ever reveal you his method. Handicapping NBA properly requires a great ammount of time, and there are lots of tools and info in there. But you need time to dissect the matchups: how one player will match up against another player, how the pace of one team may influence the other (age matters here), strenghts vs weaknesses (e.g. Giannis and the Bucks feast whenever they play a team that does not have a good rim protector), homefield, referee crew style. It aint the same for the Bucks to play the Jazz, than for GS to play the Jazz. It aint the same for Harden to play with a ref crew that ranks amongst the refs with the most fouls called, than to play with refs that allow more contact and true basketball.
You can do your research and find the proper tools online to see how an injury affects a team´s pace, opponent points per minute, their points per minute, among others. That helps to bet totals. You can do the same and it may help to handicap points.
What do I do? On NBA I bet in play. Mostly totals. You can build your own system with Excel and add whichever variable you consider important. And start looking for tendencies. No need to do much review pre-game, just focus on the numbers that each game starts throwing to you.
I would love to handicap the games before they start but I don´t have the time. If there is a key injury I almost certainly do analyze that game as some injuries tend to be overrated, and some tend to be underrated. Maybe I go pro in a year and am able to handicap as a full time job, who knows... I don´t have the balls to pull that trigger yet.
If you have the time and the passion start doing your numbers and research and figure out your method. This simple tool is extremely helpful to play around
There are some good handicappers here. League Capper is a legend, but he stoped giving us write ups (look for the ones from earlier this season and you will see some of the angles a good handicapper should look for). Gucci Capper is good as well. Look for those writeups and tells and research their arguments, verify the info. Sometimes they are wrong (e.g. I don´t agree at all with the MLK angle that was tossed up today on some threads... the players couldnt care less, and neither the crowd. Proof of this, the arena at Memphis today was empty), but sometimes they are right. You are the one to tell.
Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Here is some great advise for you, if you are looking for "the great system" and are thinking to start gambling ... Before you "might" become successful, and come up with something that works around 55 to 60% of the time, you are going to need to set aside roughly 15 to 20 years of hard knocks ... 15 to 20 years of looking, learning, studying, losing, being broke and down and out ... 15 to 20 years of thinking, at least 10,000 times, that this is it, "you" have finally found the perfect system ... 15 to 20 years of being disappointed ... While all this is happening, you can then, more likely than not, battle depression ... Why, because you have probably put yourself in some serious debt, that you can see no way out ... If by some sort of miracle, at the end of the day, you come through to the other side, then and only then, do I give you a chance of becoming a pretty good, successful gambler ... Now all you need to do is ask yourself ... Should I go through these 15 to 20 years of torture !!!
I leave it to you to decide ... BOL with your decision my friend ...
