I'm going two units on Memphis Grizzlies -4.

I was shocked when I saw this line as I had it on my own estimates at -7.5 or -8. Memphis has already beaten LAL by 8 this year back on November 23 and quite honestly, I can't really think of too many situations where this 5-14 road record LAL team should be catching less than 6 points in any road situation, especially one in which they are playing their 3rd road game in four days.

There is also pretty clearly some dissent within the ranks -- Kobe is unhappy with D'Antoni, Pau is unhappy with D'Antoni, Kobe is unhappy with Dwight and vice versa... this is not a team that is going to be able to "win one for the team" and has such good chemistry that they can flip the switch and all of a sudden start playing together like, I dunno, a team like Memphis does.

Add in the fact that you KNOW you will get a good defense effort from Memphis, especially at home. MEM allows the second least points per game in the league (89.4) while the Lakers give up 101.4 per game on average. Is MEM, with all the pressure they generate on the perimeter, really the type of team that LAL is going to "bounce back" against from an offensive perspective? If MEM keeps running their sets on offense, eventually the LAL defense WILL break down. They are undisciplined. We have seen it all year.

I also have no idea how LAL will try to stop the Z-Bo/Gasol combo if they are unwilling to play Gasol and D-12 at the same time, and it seems like D'Antoni has reached that decision. You really think Earl Clark or Antawn Jamison can stop Z-Bo or Gasol on the block?

Tony Allen will b able to make it very difficult for Kobe on the perimeter, and I have no idea how LAL stops penetration into the lane unless they put Kobe on Conley. Even then, Tony Allen could blow by Nash on the wing if they do that.

Another factor favoring MEM tonight: the referees, always important but never forgotten. Let's look at the crew being rolled out for this game: Fehr, Goble, and Kennedy. As a combined crew, they are 59-38 SU for the home squad and 57-40 ATS for the home team. That's the cherry on the sundae for me.

Memphis has been at home in their own beds since Sunday, while LAL has traveled from TOR to CHI to MEM during that same time span. Will they have tired legs? I think so.

LAL is still getting tons of "name value" respect, which is completely misplaced. This line should be MEM -7.5 or -8. I'll lay the 4 and take the value.

Oh, and MEM is also coming off of a nail biter loss at home to IND. MEM hasn't lost two straight home games all year. Of MEM 15 home wins this year, 14 of them have been by more than 4 points.

Following a home loss, in their next home game MEM has done the following:

    W vs. LAL by 8
    W vs. CHI by 9
    W vs. DEN by 9
W vs. SAS by 3 (their only home victory by less than 4)
    W vs. SAC by 16
    ? vs. LAL tonight

I like that pattern as a MEM backer.

Great write-up on the Laker side.

But I think Memphis has issues right now, too.  I just don't know what they are.  Does anyone know why they've been losing more games recently?

Oh, and according to Covers' closing line history, LAL has been a dog 12 times this year. They have lost 9 of those games by more than 4 points.

You make some good points. But Im not convinced yet, Im just gonna sit back and watch this one and be cheering for you. BOL and Good write up

Did you know that of PHX's 17 road losses, 15 were by more than 3.5 points?

Did you know that of SAC's 12 home wins, 8 have been by more than 3.5 points?

Someone talk me out of SAC -3.5 tonight.

Of PHX's last 15 games overall, they are 4-11 against a hypothetical +3.5 line

Memphis made a minor move Tuesday, dealing Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a heavily protected future draft pick to the Cavaliers for forward Jon Leuer and a trade exception. The deal was conducted with business in mind - it saves the Grizzlies $6 million against the salary cap and eliminates the need to pay a luxury tax bill of roughly $4 million. "It’s a trade that had to be made ... so that we can keep our core together and we move forward," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I hate to lose Mo and Wayne and Josh but it's part of the business of basketball."

buffalo -- well aware of that move. Selby rarely played, Ellington has not been really all that great at all, and Spieghts' loss will just mean more minutes for Darrell Arthur

    Good points Kap...

playing Devil's Advocate here...but knowing all of those points that you mentioned about the Grizzlies...why would the line be so low?  Is Vegas gonna pay out the world tonight with all that?

I chalk it up to a large number of people who are still betting LAL to "turn this thing around" tonight. I mean look at the thread by 2Team_Parlay on page 2 right now -- people are still taking the Lakers despite all evidence to the contrary.

I think sometimes the books give us "gift" lines because they know they will get equal action on an extremely public side. The Lakers are still a hugely public side and will bring in action due to their personnel and this belief that, hey, eventually they have to start winning, right?

That's my best assumption. I don't want to overthink this one though and when I capped this thing at -7.5 or -8 and it comes out at -4, I'll take the perceived value of 3.5-4 points every single time, even if it is a "trap" line
